National Register of Historic Places listings in southern Puerto Rico

Thanks for pointing out my error at National Register of Historic Places listings in southern and western Puerto Rico. I'm not sure how I managed to do that. The Casa Paoli listing was announced by the NPS this past Friday. I've added it to the list again, this time making sure not to mess up the rest of the page. Happy editing! --sanfranman59 (talk) 00:13, 12 October 2009 (UTC)

Reference format

Actually, there is a simple way of re-using the same reference without creating a mess. You are currently using <ref></ref>; but if you add a name to the reference: <ref name="example"></ref>; you only need to add <ref name="example"/> in every other instance of the same reference, reducing all of the cluttering. - Caribbean~H.Q. 01:28, 16 October 2009 (UTC)

Casa Paoli

I was going to work on Casa Paoli in a sandbox first, towards making a DYK nomination later, but see you also found the NRHP nomination document and started the article in mainspace, which is fine. Since you started it on 10/12, and since the 5-day DYK submission deadline for new articles is then tomorrow, can you possibly please help develop the article today/tomorrow? Great news: i've obtained 5 great photos and permission to use them from the NRHP nominator (the color ones included in the nomination). I'll upload those to commons and include into article later. I'd really like to co-develop this as a great DYK, using the 1st color pic, on page 15 of the NRHP nomination. The article needs to have >1500 characters in the main text, and to be written reasonably well, with a reference for each paragraph (can be the NRHP nomination for almost all). Thanks! doncram (talk) 17:29, 16 October 2009 (UTC)

Hi, glad you are interested in getting NRHP documents for other Ponce places. However, the Casa Paoli one is exceptional because it is a weekly "featured listing". Those are announced by the National Park Service at http://www.nps.gov/history/nr/nrlist.htm and they are listed in wikipedia at National Register of Historic Places featured properties and districts. The NRHP document is provided online for them. Casa Paoli and National Astronomy and Ionosphere Center are the only two Puerto Rico ones so far there. In about 10 states, but not Puerto Rico, all the NRHP documents are available online. For Puerto Rico, the NRHP document is available for free for every site but you have to request it, by email to nr_reference (at) nps.gov. You should go ahead and request a few right now, to see that this works. If they have it scanned they just email it to you, otherwise they send a photocopy by postal mail. They will reply by email, perhaps saying it may take 2 weeks to send it to you, but I have always received it more quickly. If there are more requests for Puerto Rico ones, perhaps they will be encouraged to scan all of them and make them available on-line, sooner. Cheers, doncram (talk) 02:49, 21 October 2009 (UTC)
P.S. Actually the four Puerto Rico National Historic Landmarks, Antonio Lopez (shipwreck), Caguana Site, Caparra Archaeological Site, and La Fortaleza should also have NRHP docs available on-line, through the NPS Focus interface. That interface is pretty frustrating otherwise, it allows you to search for other sites and seem to find them, but when you download it is just a PDF saying the PDF you want is not available. So it's best to just request the document. They'll email it right away if it is available in electronic form. doncram (talk) 03:00, 21 October 2009 (UTC)

P.P.S. Using the NPS Focus system, I added references/links for the Caguana Site and La Fortaleza, but find the NRHP docs are not available for Antonio Lopez (shipwreck) or the Caparra one, and also not for San Juan National Historic Site. I believe there are no others for which NRHP nomination docs are available on-line. There are NPS "Travel Itinerary" websites for 27 Puerto Rico NRHPs (including 4 in Ponce), listed here, which are useful but which have much less info than a nomination document. doncram (talk) 15:20, 21 October 2009 (UTC)

Photos from PDFs

Hi. I noticed your query on Doncram's talk page (which is on my watchlist), and am replying to it because I have an answer for you.

The free Adobe Reader software includes a "snapshot tool" that allows you to select an image from a PDF, copy, and paste it into another application. It only works if the PDF is not protected against copying. However, that's an important point to note, as images can only be used here if they are "free" (for example, in the public domain -- see WP:Copyright and WP:Media copyright questions for more information on authorization to use images). Most images in downloadable PDFs are not free. --Orlady (talk) 14:48, 24 October 2009 (UTC)

Boricua Barnstar

I hope that you accept this "Boricua Barnstar" which I am presenting you for your exceptional work on Puerto Rico related articles, thereby "Poniendo nuestra isla en alto". Tony the Marine (talk) 20:05, 4 November 2009 (UTC)

This Boricua Tireless Contributor Barnstar is presented to Mercy11 for the continous work on Puerto Rican related articles. Presented by Tony the Marine (talk) 20:05, 4 November 2009 (UTC)

Category

Hello Mercy, it is easy to create the proper category. In this case create a Category: Barrios of Ponce and write this "The following are Barrio's (a Spanish word meaning district or neighborhood) of Ponce, Puerto Rico." After you save (Like you normally do with a created article) the go to the eight barrio articles which you created and add them. Tony the Marine (talk) 02:53, 7 November 2009 (UTC)

autoreviewer

Hey there. I've granted you the autoreviewer user right. This was done because your contributions show that you create good articles, so those that review new pages don't need to look over your creations. It's just a flag to help us keep track; you shouldn't notice anything different. If you have any other questions, please let me know on my talk page. Thanks for your work! — Jake Wartenberg 00:40, 22 November 2009 (UTC)

  • I believe that all is good. The change will make your editing job much easier, however it is up to you if wish to keep the changes. If you decide that you do not want them then let Jake know. Tony the Marine (talk) 00:58, 22 November 2009 (UTC)

Re:chat

Hello Mercy, you are more then welcomed to comment in my "chat". I suggest that the "See also" section with the PR Portal and a link to "List of famous Puerto Ricans" be placed on all Puerto Rican biographies. A "See also" section with the "PR-portal" can also be placed in the "barrios" with the intention of catching the readers attention as to the positive contributions made by Puerto Ricans, but that would optional. In the article that I wrote about the "Piragua" I only posted related topics of interest in the "See also" section. That is only my opinion.

  • I believe that an article that has only one short sentence or paragraph should be considered a "stub". An article with more then a paragraph, but lacking full information and falling short of being a full article, should be considered as "start".
  • Not all public records have DoB or DoD information. To give you an example, when I wrote the story of Capt. Ivan Castro, I could not find anywhere his date of birth, therefore I made an educated guess at the year that he was born. It wasn't until a couple of days ago when we spoke on the phone that he confirmed his real date of birth. I was off by one year. If you know the year that the person or subject in question entered the service, then you can make an educated guess that he/she was born 18 years earlier since the average age in which most people enter the service is 18. If the person entered the service with a BA, then figure that the person was born 22 years before he received his BA. When guessing the year of a person's birth just add a "circa", example: (c. 1962) and that'll do it.
  • In regard to Joxel García, I don't know how the PHSCC works as to the release of information to the public. For one thing, he was an Admiral in the United States Public Health Service Commissioned Corps (PHSCC) which is the federal uniformed service of the United States Public Health Service (PHS) and not of the military. Even though the PHSCC is one of the seven uniformed services of the United States, it is not related nor part of the five military branches of the United States (Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force and Coast Guard) and his PHSCC Admiral rank, which is temporary, has no bearing in the Navy or Coast Guard, it is more symbolic then anything else. The only two Hispanic full Admirals (four-star) so far have been David Farragut and Horacio Rivero. Tony the Marine (talk) 06:02, 15 May 2010 (UTC)

Huracanes

Re: Money doubles

Money may double in recent years, but not during depressions. Please do research before reverting me. I have been editing Misplaced Pages for five years, I know what I'm doing.

In 1928, it was $50 million. Per this first hit on Google for inflation calculators:

  • 1940: $42 million
  • 1952: $77.6 million
  • 1964: $90 million
  • 1976: $166 million
  • 1988: $346 million
  • 2000: $503 million
  • 2009: $620 million

Please do not revert me. --Hurricanehink (talk) 04:02, 11 June 2010 (UTC)

Re:Images

  • I agree with Pr4ever,

You should upload the images with the following for now:

  • Description
  • Source

http://bibliotecadigital.uprrp.edu/ Images are PD because of the following statement made by the University of Puerto Rico:

  1. "Estos recursos están disponibles libremente para los estudiosos, investigadores, estudiantes y otras personas interesadas en la historia, la política, la economía, los asuntos sociales y culturales de Puerto Rico desde el siglo XIX hasta el presente."
  2. These resources are available freely for the scholars, investigators, students and other people interested in the history, the politics, the economy, the cultural and social matters of Puerto Rico since the 19th century to the present.

Images obtained from the defunct newspaper "El Mundo" therefore said license also applies:

AWARD

The Hats Off Barnstar
I hereby bestow this Hats off Barnstar to User:Mercy11 for his outstanding and extensive contributions to articles related to the Category:Puerto Rican nationalists. Your dedication and fervor in improving these articles greatly contribute to the knowledge and contributions of that these Puerto Ricans made for their cause. My Hats off to you Mercy11. Re:Images

You said: Quazgaa, I don't think it is enough, but maybe some one can try. I am not experienced with OTRS as well as others here. It seemed Tony was saying earlier he would try and find out what is UPR's official policy in regard to the images. Tony, have you had any contact that might take us to gain permission to use? Regards, Mercy11

Ponceweb.org

Hi, I see you added a lot of links to ponceweb.org (see linksearch). This site appears to have been taken over or something, but it is far from useful. I have removed about half the links. Could you have a look at the rest? EdBever (talk) 20:22, 11 December 2010 (UTC)

Painting of Rafael Cordero Santiago

Continuing discussion here of this image, you can upload copyrighted images to Misplaced Pages under the Misplaced Pages:Non-free content guideline/policy (part of it is policy). Copyrighted photos of living people just to show what the look like are forbidden under that policy. I cannot find a reference in the policy to images of people that have died (Santiago died in 2004). I honestly don't know what the policy is in this area, although File:John McCarthy Roll.jpg, whose article has been high-traffic lately, suggests that fair use images of people that have died are OK. Another issue with fair use is criterion 2: "Respect for commercial opportunities. Non-free content is not used in a manner that is likely to replace the original market role of the original copyrighted media." Given that, a photo would be better than a painting. The painting may be the artist's livelihood much more than a low-resolution photograph. A low-resolution version of a widely published image like this one is probably a better choice.--Chaser (talk) 05:13, 11 January 2011 (UTC)

That photographic image is wonderful. How did you find it??? It shows that Churumba was a "fighter." He is credited with forcing the descentralization of the state government in PR via court battles that resulted in the Law of Autonomous Municipalities and the yielding of power from the central government to the municipalities. Until then, the municipalities had been nothing else than mere agents of the central government to carry on its functions rather than executors of the will of its local constituencies. Thus, for example, the Representative from Ponce in the State Legislature had more power than the Mayor of Ponce.
As such I think we should use that new image in the body of the article to portray that fighter quality of Churumba. However, how do we know that photo is not copywrited? Either way, and in any event, I would still use the image photo of the painting of Churumba in the infobox. It makes the article more presentable (because it is a portrait) than the photo (not a portrait). Of course, I would use it only as permitted by fair use gidelines. Mercy11 (talk) 17:00, 13 January 2011 (UTC)

Images that we use under a fair use rationale are by definition copyrighted. Copyright exists by default (at least in the United States, and by publishing that image on Flickr, the author would probably attain the protection of American copyright law). If you're not satisfied with the first photo, I suggest the one here. Let me know if you cannot figure out a fair use upload and I will help you. Any photo is better than a painting for the added reason that it is an exact depiction of the person and has none of the artistic flourishes of paintings. I found both these photos with Google image search.--Chaser (talk) 04:00, 16 January 2011 (UTC)

That new photo is great for a portrait. Let's use this one in the infobox and the "fighter" photo in the article. The only thing is: if this new photo is copyrighted too, how do we justify its use in Misplaced Pages so that another wikipedian won't come around (much like you did) and nominate it for deletion too? That would make any work/effort now by you or me useless. Don't you think? Regards, Mercy11 (talk) 04:43, 16 January 2011 (UTC)

Our fair use policy limits the number of non-free photos that can be used in any particular article. I recommend you use the "figher" photo and nothing else. The reason the photo was not suitable for Commons is that it was not freely licensed. Misplaced Pages (but not Commons) can use photos that are not freely licensed under the fair use exception. Use the following code in the photo's description (you will need to resize the photo down and copy the code out of the editing window): {{Non-free use rationale |Article = Rafael Cordero Santiago |Description = This is a picture of ]. He was mayor of Ponce, Puerto Rico. |Source = add source |Portion = |Low_resolution = Resolution was substantially reduced from the original |Purpose = For use in the infobox of ]. |Replaceability = Santiago is dead, so new free images of him cannot be produced. |other_information = This will be used for historical/informational purposes only. }} {{non-free fair use in|Rafael Cordero Santiago}}

Re:Leoncio Rivera or Pedro Segundo

I am sorry that I didn't answer your message sooner. I do not know anything about Leoncio Rivera or Pedro Segundo. You know, El Antiguo Cuartel Militar Español de Ponce is a goldmine and is worth studying. I will try to investigate both Leoncio Rivera and Pedro Segundo. At times I receive e-mails asking me about this and that. Yesterday, I recieved an e-mail asking me "who was the first Puerto Rican female Sergeant Major?". Caramba, I didn't know and I had no idea how to find out, but it made me curious and I did some research. The result is this article: María V. Martínez. Take care. María de las Mercedes Barbudo

"Yo admiro la valentía de nuestra mujeres y es por eso, gracias a tí, que voy escríbir la biografia en Misplaced Pages de María de las Mercedes Barbudo". Oops, I forgot that there those in Misplaced Pages who might feel offended if I write to friend in Spanish instead of in English, therefore for those people I will translate my message: "I admire the courage of our women and that is why, thanks to you, that I will write the biography of María de las Mercedes Barbudo in Misplaced Pages".
