J. Cheney Mason is an American attorney, best known as the co-counsel for Casey Anthony in the Casey Anthony trial.
Personal life
Mason commenced his private law practice in Orlando, Florida in 1971 upon being admitted to the Florida State Bar. His practice areas are criminal defense, marital and family law, entertainment law and trial practice. He holds a distinguished legal certification: he Florida State Bar and the National Board of Trial Advocacy have found him to be a board-certified criminal trial lawyer.
Through his practice, Mason has authored various legal articles, and has lectured at various institutions, including the Florida State Bar, University of Florida, College of Law, and other legal associations. For his contributions in the legal community, Mason has received many awards including the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers's Robert C. Heeney Memorial Award received in 2004.
He is currently rated as an "AV" lawyer (the highest possible rating) by Martindale Hubbell, and is listed in the Bar Register of Preeminent Lawyers.
Mason has also appeared on several news media outlets, often providing expert commentary on legal matters of public interest. In fact, he has been featured as a "Top Lawyer" several times. His news profiles include those featured in Orlando Magazine, ABC's Nightline, Public Eye With Bryant Gumbel, NBC's Today Show, NBC's Dateline, CBS' 48 Hours and Court TV.
Mason has tried several criminal jury trials that were televised by national and local news media. Among those, his most notable media appearances have occurred in the course of his involvement in the Casey Anthony trial.

On June 30, 2011, the defense team for Casey Anthony rested without Anthony testifying in her own defense. The jury began deliberations on July 4, 2011. On July 5, 2011, Anthony was found not guilty of felony murder, aggravated assault and manslaughter. She was found guilty on four lesser charges of providing false information to police. For the four convictions of lying, She was sentenced to four years in prison for lying to police, but with credit for time served and good behavior she is slated to be released on July 17, 2011.
