The Calapooya are an ethnic group from present-day western day. The Calapooya comprised a number related tribes speakign dialects of various Oregon Penutian languages in the Willamette Valley, as well as along the Umpqua River in Douglas County.
In 1854 they ceded many of their lands to the United States under the Kalapuya Treaty in exchange primarily for money. The Calapooia River is named for the tribe.
