Alexander Misharin

Alexander Sergeevich Misharin (born January 21, 1959) is the current governor of Sverdlovsk Oblast, a region in Russia. He was appointed in 2009 after resignation of the previous governor, Eduard Rossel.

Misharin has scientific degrees in economy and engineering. Previously he worked at Sverdlovsk Railway and other different institutions connected to Russia's transport infrastructure. During the 2000s, he served at Transport Ministry in several ranks including Deputy Minister.

As the governor, he plans different infrastructural and transport innovations in the Sverdlovsk Oblast and Ural Federal District. The most massive of the projects is the creation of so-called Titanium Valley — special economic zone and industrial park which will make products for the aircraft, automotive, shipbuilding and medical industries. He is also one of the organizers of the international industrial exhibit Innoprom.

During his two years in the office, A.S.Misharin was involved in numerous scandals and controversies, being regularly accused of mismanagement and corruption. In particular:

  • A.S.Misharin lobbies a highly controversial project of high-speed train line from Ekaterinburg to Moscow. The length of the railway line is expected at ~2000km, thus such a train will travel for at least 7 hours, but most likely 10-12 hours. Cost estimates for the dedicated train infrastructure start at 50 billion USD ($350 per every Russian), not counting maintenance. 80 billion USD is another official estimation. Many commentators express doubts that the project will ever break even, mostly because of low traffic, high costs and unability to compete with air travel at greater distances.
  • A.S.Misharin ran a campaign for cancellation of city mayor elections in all cities of the region.
