The story begins when Greg Heffley talks about naughty and nice close to Christmas. Bullying is a big problem at his school, and kids even bully Greg when he is not at school. A kid named Nasty Pants is a 5 year old alegged "bully" (a hyperactive five year old boy) that chases Greg and Rowley with a stick when they come into his neighborhood. Meanwhile, the school's playground has no equipment making it an empty sawdust pit. The teachers have rules about being active during recess, and the students aren't allowed to sit or run. Rowley skipped during recess and everyone thinks he is protesting the no running rule because there is no restrictions on skipping. Greg then talks about his inability to skip and it gets on his nerves when Rowley skips. There was also a strict no toy policy so a black market for toys started in their school. |

In the present, he plays a game called Net Kritterz where he has a chihuahua named Gregory's Little Friend. (his mom made his account and he can't change it.) He claims he misses something to care for. He also is hitting on his parents for Kritterz Kash where you spend real money to buy online tokens. His mom said he was playing video games too much so when Rowley came over Greg's mom brought down Wackey Sentences for them to write down funny phrases instead of playing video games. Greg explains Rowley's annoying habit of saying lol instead of laughing. Later, Greg and Rowley got into a fight for what letter Volleyball starts with. Eventually, they both gave up and played a game to show who is braver. Greg bet him that whoever wrote their name on the tree fort was right about volleyball and had to call the other one "sir". Greg had already written his name on it, so he ran off, and took a break from Rowley and pretended he outran a bear. Greg won because he scared Rowley. That morning, Rowley came along with Greg's Family to church. Rowley didn't exactly understand how church works. When they were saying Peace, Rowley kissed an old lady and thought Greg was making a joke; Peace/Peas Be with you. The Heffleys were glad Rowley left after that. |

There was no envelope and he walked home bummed about it. The police came but they talked about the Toy Drive, not about Greg's vandalism. When it was Christmas, there weren't any presents under the christmas tree. Mom said that Santa Claus put the presents in the garage. Greg's mom got the Tower of Druids book actually signed by Kenny Centazzo. In the neighborhood newspaper, there was an article that talks about what Greg did at the church parking lot. Greg and Rowley created their own newspaper, the Tattler. They had put news about the new Holiday Bazaar they were going to have at their house. There needed to be more things in the paper, so Greg and Rowley created comics and an advice column with fake letters sent in: "Ask Greg". Greg and Rowley went to Papa Tony's pizza and talked to Papa Tony. They said that he could put an ad in their newspaper, and he did. They got rid of most of the copies but still had some left so Greg gave away the paper at the school. Vice Principal Roy said that they couldn't give an unautherized publication on school grounds. So Greg decided to put posters about the Holiday Bazaar on the main wall of the school. It started to rain and the poster boards began to run, and the neon green ink on the poster board bleeded through and made green and permanent splotches on the wall, as in vandalism. Someone saw the green spots on the wall after Greg and Rowley remode the posters so they ran away. The next day, an article in the newspaper talked about the green splotches Greg and Rowley made, meaning that they were criminals.
During class, all the students started to talk about what happened. The vice principal of the school called down students to see if they were the vandals, and police were there with a fake lie detector (copier) that copies a sheet of paper that says "He's lying.". They pressed the copy button when the student looked suspicious. Vice Principal Roy made an anonymous tip box. Rowley put in a note that says: "Me and Greg vandalized the school. Greg wascalled to the office. He told Vice Principal Roy what had happened with the poster. He told Greg he could name his "co-conspirator" or clean up the green spots with bleach. He did a good thing for his friend and After 2 hours of hard work, Greg cleaned up the spots. He went home and saw a note on the front door from the police dept. that said We came by, but nobody was home. We will come back later. That night, someone knocked at the door when Greg was asleep. Later, it got louder and Greg got up. He had worn a helmet and pads incase it was something that would harm him. It was actually Dad who got his tie stuck on the door.
