The Southern Pinwheel Galaxy (Messier object M83) is a barred spiral galaxy in the constellation Hydra. It is one of the closest and brightest barred spiral galaxies in the sky, making it visible with binoculars. The nickname "Southern Pinwheel" is due to its spiral arms. Supernovae 1923A, 1945B, 1950B, 1957D, 1968L, and 1983N were observed in M83.
