'''"Usurpations"''' are recurring events in Chinese history, when the imperial throne was not passed on according to general principles of ], but was instead seized by another person, usually without involving the (immediate, at least) death of the emperor whose throne was being seized. Some people use the term only to refer to the end (or interruption) of a dynasty (i.e., the seizure of the throne by a person not in the imperial clan), while some people use the term also refer to intradynasty seizures of the throne. The list below includes both. It does not include situations where there were multiple claimants of some competing degrees or legitimacy, or the struggles between different potential heirs of an emperor before he decided on one.
