Catherine Tate is an English actress and comedienne, whose BBC2 solo series of 2004, The Catherine Tate Show, received wide acclaim.
Born Catherine Ford in Bloomsbury, London in 1968, she was brought up in the distinctive Brunswick Centre. Catherine attended a local Catholic primary school and a south London convent secondary school before going on to train at the Central School of Speech and Drama. She began her television career taking on roles in serial dramas such as Casualty and The Bill and appeared in comedy series such as The Harry Hill Show, Big Train, Wild West and That Peter Kay Thing before being given her own show that she co-wrote with Derren Litten.
In 2005, Tate appeared in the West End play Some Girl(s), alongside Friends actor David Schwimmer. The play also starred Sara Powell (Silent Witness), Lesley Manville (Vera Drake) and Saffron Burrows (Troy). In an interview, Tate commented that she could not look Schwimmer in the eye during her time with him, leading to speculation that the pair did not get on. Tate immediately denied the rumours, explaining that she was joking about her attempts to act "cool" around the actor, who she described as, "a very funny, personable man, and easy to get along with".
After the second series of her show started airing, she had clearly become more popular in society, with many people starting to quote one of her famous catchphrases from the show: "Am I bothered?"
She was quoted as saying "I love astrologer Jonathan Cainer. I ring his phone line twice a week and he's always spot on with me and three million other Taureans. But I know it's MY soul he's looking into."
