==Description==
In the first edition only two types were known to exist, the xag-ya and xeg-yi, and the generic term "energon" was not used. These were associated with positive and negative energy, respectively. Energons associated with different types of energy were introduced later.

Energons appear as incorporeal floating globes with a pair of spots that resemble eyes. A half-dozen to a dozen tentacles protrude from the sphere. Energons look like octopuses when they "swim" through the air.

In the Dungeons & Dragons fantasy setting, energons are enimatic, incorporeal outsiders found throughout the Inner Planes.

Publication history

The xag-ya and xeg-yi first appeared in the first edition adventure module The Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth (1982), and were reprinted in the original Monster Manual II (1983).

The xag-ya and xeg-yi appeared in the second edition for the Planescape setting in the Planescape Monstrous Compendium Appendix III (1998).

The xag-ya and xeg-yi appeared as energons in the third edition Manual of the Planes (2001). The spiritovore energons, including the soulmarauder, the soulscaper, and the soulsipper, appeared in the adventure module Bastion of Broken Souls (2002). The xag-az psionic energon appeared on the Wizards of the Coast website in 2002. The xac-yel, the xac-yij, the xap-yaup, the xong-yong, and the xor-yost energons appeared in the Planar Handbook (2004).
