Other pageant notes

Historical significance

  • Angola (Leila Lopes) is the 1st winner of Miss Universe from Angola.
  • A record of 89 countries participated this year.
  • This was the first time, since 1983, that no Spanish-speaking country made it to the top 5, and the 16th time in the history of Miss Universe.
  • There was no opening dance at the start of the pageant. Instead, the delegates introduced themselves to a live audience. This live introduction format was last used in 1997.
  • For the first time, a 16th semi-finalist spot was added to the contestant who had the most fan votes. Portugal ended up with the majority of the votes.
  • Portugal was placed for the first time.
  • Australia was placed for the fourth consecutive year.
  • France and Puerto Rico were placed for the third consecutive year.
  • Angola, Portugal and Ukraine reached their highest ever places in the pageant.
  • Philippines and Ukraine placed in the top five the previous year while Australia, Colombia, France and Puerto Rico placed in the top 15 in the previous year.
  • Philippines scored its first back-to-back placement since its 4-year streak from 1972 to 1975.
  • Montenegro won the Miss Congeniality award for the first time.
  • Sweden won the Miss Photogenic for the third time.
  • Panama won the Best National Costume award for the fourth time.
  • Netherlands last placed in 1992.
  • China was last placed in 2002.
  • Panama was last placed in 2003.
  • Costa Rica was last placed in 2004.
  • Angola and Brazil were last placed in 2007.
  • Kosovo, USA and Venezuela were last placed in 2009.
  • The judges' average score was not shown during the telecast event. Instead, a "fan score" was introduced, where byfans could rate a contestant online.
  • A new musical score was introduced during the entire pageant telecast, veering away from the Orente musical score which had been used from 2004 to 2010.

Replacements

  • Curaçao Curaçao – Evalina van Putten replaced Monifa Jansen since Jansen did not meet the age requirements stipulated by the Miss Universe Organization. Jansen was born in March, 1993.
  • El Salvador El Salvador – Mayra Aldana replaced Alejandra Ochoa after Alejandra suffered from chronic respiratory illness and was not able to compete.

Designations

  •  Denmark – Sandra Amer was appointed as Miss Universe Denmark 2011 after a casting call took place.
  •  Greece – Iliana Papageorgiou was appointed by the Star Hellas organization to represent Greece at Miss Universe 2011.
  •  Guatemala – Alejandra Barillas was appointed as Miss Universe Guatemala 2011 in a special ceremony. Barillas was the original representative to Miss Universe 2010 but due to an injury she could not attend. One of her runner-ups (Jessica Scheel) took her place.
  •  Kazakhstan – Valeriya Aleinikova was appointed to represent Kazakhstan after the Miss Kazakhstan organization dropped the franchise and a new organization took over.
  •  Montenegro – Nikolina Loncar was appointed to represent Montenegro after she could not compete in 2010 because she did not meet the minimum age requirement.
  •  Vietnam – Vũ Thị Hoàng My was appointed to represent Vietnam after the pageant organizers were unable to host a beauty pageant. The permission was granted by the Ministry of Culture of Vietnam, which authorizes the international representation of the nation in events of any kind.
