In the fictional He-Man universe, Castle Grayskull hid the source of the secret power of the planet Eternia, and possibly the whole universe. Castle Grayskull, which was surrounded by a seemingly bottomless pit, appeared to have been constructed from brick and stone. The face of the castle was shaped like a skull (hence the name) and the skull's mouth was the only entrance (other than the numerous dimensional gates located within the castle). The mouth formed a jawbridge that spanned the abyss to the other side.
The castle was guarded by a Sorceress who lived there. The exact determination of the succession of who these magical guardians would be is uncertain, as the Sorceress was generally described as immortal, but it was also understood that despite her access to potentially unlimited cosmic power, she herself had definite finite powers and could be exhausted. As the Castle guardian seems to always be a sorceress and not a sorcerer, it is possible that Castle Grayskull had matrilineal succession.
Grayskull was also defended by Eternia's greatest hero, cartoon character He-Man (and his alter ego Prince Adam), as featured in the Masters of the Universe range of toys, comics and cartoon series.
