He is interested in history and archaeology, and is obsessed with trains, especially steam. It has been suggested that he has symptoms of autism, or possibly Asperger's Syndrome. He first came into the story as a tenant in a building owned by Mike Baldwin, and then came to work in the cafe alongside Alma Baldwin. When Alma sold up, Roy bought a share in the business. When Gail Platt also left, Roy became the sole proprietor, and changed the name to "Roy's Rolls."
He considers himself married to Hayley Cropper, although their marriage is not currently legally binding as Hayley Cropper is a transsexual woman.
