Page Curation newsletter - closing up!

Hey all :).

We're (very shortly) closing down this development cycle for Page Curation. It's genuinely been a pleasure to talk with you all and build software that is so close to my own heart, and also so effective. The current backlog is 9 days, and I've never seen it that low before.

However! Closing up shop does not mean not making any improvements. First-off, this is your last chance to give us a poke about unresolved bugs or report new ones on the talkpage. If something's going wrong, we want to know about it :). Second, we'll hopefully be taking another pass over the software next year. If you've got ideas for features Page Curation doesn't currently have, stick them here.

On new accounts

When you ran for administrator a while back, I knew that you had a previous account (per your disclosure) but didn't know which account it was, and didn't ask. I had (and have) no idea whether it was a clean start, an RTV that you changed your mind about, or what. I supported your candidacy regardless, based on your positive contributions with your current account. I'm sure you recall that other, less trusting editors opposed your candidacy because of the previous account.

To have you then turn around and ask a loaded, insulting question like this to another editor during their RfA feels like a bit of a slap in the face, to be honest. 28bytes (talk) 22:50, 23 October 2012 (UTC)

The difference between a cleanstart and an RTV is that a cleanstart doesn't bury evidence. Sure, you can have your userpage deleted, but the talk page is always there where it was left, the edit history of articles is never changed, and it's the account is still searchable. When someone uses RTV they all but disappear. It's a process many people don't even know about, it edits article histories, it deletes talk pages, it makes searching the user almost impossible if you don't already know what the rename was to. In short, RTV is tremendously powerful. That's why it's explicit that someone never comes back from a cleanstart, and implicit that if they do, they unhide their old account immediately. Abusing RTV hurts the project because Misplaced Pages is built on transparent attribution, and that is only broken in extreme and rare cases. There is no way that Rlevse's flagrant abuse of RTV can be framed in any other way than that he was being unethical and manipulating process. Yes, that question was loaded and hostile. That was intentional. That don't regret that, because I don't trust him, and I don't trust that he won't dodge the question if I give him any room to do so. One day, when there's not an RfA from a RTV abuser running, I'd be willing to share the reason why I'm so hostile to people that abuse RTV, and why Rlevse in particular set off my hostility so strongly. As odd as this might sound to you, I don't want to poison the RfA by bringing in an incident which, as far as I know, Rlevse was only minorly involved in. Oblivion, er, umm, Civilization V awaits?

Hey Sven, was stopping by the Reward Board to add my contest and stumbled upon yours. I decided that, being a fan of the game, Oblivion would be a nice choice to improve to FA. Seeing that the article is within a kilobyte of its size at the end of its fifth FAC I'll start working on fixing errors listed here. I realize I have some competition, but it's not that important if I get the game.

Thanks for the extra content (I've approved it), but I wasn't trying to force you to find extra information. Rather, I had assumed that you'd add little bits of text here and there, e.g. "Additionally, " at the start of the final sentence or "their " before "structural limits". I have a few GA credits, but that doesn't mean that I understand the process; when I nominated one early last month, it got failed because I used a professional style of writing ("too difficult to understand!") and because I refused to speculate on a subject that my sources said was uncertain. I was angry about the situation early on, but I decided that it wasn't a big enough deal to worry about trying again, especially since I didn't know (1) how long I was supposed to wait between nominations, and (2) whether he might re-review it and make the renomination pointless. The original post was to let Wikipedians know that NYT were removing their paywall.

The reason for that was, to allow free access due to Hurricane Sandy.

I told people here that NYT was available - that's all; someone misconstrued it as their paywall being down because of the hurricane. It's not; they've just allowed free access.

The ensuing argument was pointless, and yes you were right to collapse it; however, the original point - that NYT is currently not 'paywalled' - is worthy of note on t'pump.

The language of Wikivoyage Wts is called "wts" and all links use the non-working interwiki prefix "wts". Copy the text to Notepad or some other text editor. Save the file as anything (say, wikivoyage.txt). Download a new copy of FTCG and put it somewhere (not in your usual English Misplaced Pages FTCG directory) and start the program. Also, maybe you could check these files? They are all in use somewhere on Wikivoyage and exist under a different name on Commons, but may violate FOP rules. Some may be PD-old and some may be copyvios and they all need to be sorted out. Exif-Stripper Tool

Sorry about the delay in making this. I've pretty much finished the code, I just need to fix something on labs so my scripts execute as cgi (If I can't get it fixed today, I'll just move it to the toolserver).
