Correcting image descriptions
What is the point of a talk page for an image? Each one has a long list of 'things that it is not' but precious little to say what it is for. I have been editing text on Misplaced Pages for years - thousands of such edits in fact - but have always shied away from images because Misplaced Pages does not make it easy to handle them. Many times I have come across errors in the descriptions of images but have not corrected them as it is not made easy to do so. Why has this situation been allowed to continue when so many other matters have been facilitated? Geopersona (talk) 06:40, 17 December 2012 (UTC)
- Please use a heading when you start a new topic. I have added one for you. --ColinFine (talk) 09:27, 17 December 2012 (UTC)
- You're right: it's generally to discuss errors with the image descriptions, although of course you can note problems with the image itself. Note that you should only use or create talk pages for local images; if the image is on Commons, nobody here can do anything about it unless they already have a Commons account, in which case they're doing it as a Commons editor. For that reason, problems with an image at Commons should be on the image's Commons talk page. If you're looking at a Commons image and find a problem with the image itself, you can tag it with Commons:Template:Fact disputed, and if you find a problem image that's here at Misplaced Pages, use {{Disputed}}; in both cases, you should use the talk page to explain your dispute. - Which artist? Or are you wanting general guidance? Nyttend (talk) 12:44, 17 December 2012 (UTC)
- Here's some canned general advice about article creation:
Thank you.A Wizard is available to walk you through these steps. See the Article Wizard.
- Before creating an article, please search Misplaced Pages first to make sure that an article does not already exist on the subject. Please also review a few of our relevant policies and guidelines with which all articles should comply. As Misplaced Pages is an encyclopedia, articles must not contain original research, must be written from a neutral point of view, should cite reliable sources which verify their content and must not contain unsourced, negative content about living people.
- Articles must also demonstrate the notability of the subject. Please see our subject specific guidelines for people, bands and musicians, companies and organizations and web content and note that if you are closely associated with the subject, our conflict of interest guideline strongly recommends against you creating the article.
- If you still think an article is appropriate, see Misplaced Pages:Your first article. You might also look at Misplaced Pages:How to write a great article for guidance, and please consider taking a tour through the Misplaced Pages:Tutorial so that you know how to properly format the article before creation. An Article Wizard is also available to walk you through creating an article.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 13:09, 17 December 2012 (UTC)

svetlana stalina a.k.a. lana peters, daughter of josef stalin
during the seventies lana peters, a.k.a. svetlana stalina, daughter of josef stalin, lived in carlsbad california. she and her daughter regularly came into my store , first as customers and then friends. the daughter appeared to be about eight years old and was always a problem for lana as she displayed evidence of being highly agitated and disobedient. lana was very smitten by natural beauty and i sold her many mineral samples that evoked a love of natural beauty. she claimed that she put them in her kitchen window sill as examples of natural beauty. lana always appeared to be sad and somewhat lost. she tried to sell me her house and i might have, if i were financially able. her residence in carlsbad wasn't mentioned in your article and i thought that it might be information that would round out lana's residential history. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.225.140.18 (talk) 13:32, 17 December 2012 (UTC)

Internet sometimes disconnects when saving edit.
I hope that I am in the right place here for my question. If not, then please accept my apologies and ignore.
I have been doing mostly minor edits, such as spelling, grammar, readability and the like, for a couple of years now. However, I have noticed that if I do even a minor edit on certain articles, say important ones like 'Oman' or 'Qatar', then I get the internet disconnection page whenever I press save. When I return to the article, my edit is not immediately there, and only appears after I have visited a completely different article and then gone back again. This never occurs if I edit a short article or one on a minor topic.
Is this a problem with my computer? Am I doing something wrong or is it to do with the type of Wiki article I am trying to edit? I would appreciate any advice you may have. Thank you. CN3777 (talk) 17:01, 17 December 2012 (UTC)

Altering the page name
I created a wikipedia page, but did not realize that one of the words in the page name was not capitalized. I do not see any place for me to edit the page title. Can anyone help me with this? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Atlantic Pictures (talk • contribs) 19:17, 17 December 2012 (UTC)
- I renamed it for you since your account is not autoconfirmed (an editing threshold to take certain actions that is normally passed when your account is four days old and has made more than 10 edits). For future reference, pages are renamed by moving them to new target names, which preserves the page's edit history (which is why copying and pasting to a new title is a no go).--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 19:26, 17 December 2012 (UTC)
Large whitespace depends on browser . (images involved)
Please take a look at this test page with different browsers.
Internet Explorer 9 (IE9) inserts a large whitespace between the title and the body of the section Sunflower, whereas Google Chrome doesn't. Which of these two browsers behaves correctly?
I encountered this inconsistency in the wild in this article. Ceinturion (talk) 19:41, 17 December 2012 (UTC)
- Moving the Table of Contents helped quite a bit on my browser. GeorgeLouis (talk) 19:49, 17 December 2012 (UTC)
- Rather than have a non-standard TOC placement, I reduced the size of the opening image thumbnails -- how does that look?--ukexpat (talk) 20:08, 17 December 2012 (UTC)
- Both edits in the Doppler effect article did not change the large white space (approximately 30 line heights) between the sections "Applications" and "Sirens", when using IE9. Ceinturion (talk) 20:18, 17 December 2012 (UTC)
- Hmm, I don't see it in Firefox, but in IE8, I see a huge white space between "Satellite communication" and "Underwater acoustics". It is undoubtedly an image layout problem - maybe using an image stacking template for all those right side images will fix it -- I will experiment when I have a little more time.--ukexpat (talk) 20:32, 17 December 2012 (UTC)

- Misplaced Pages is an encyclopedia, not a periodical. It does not have "episodes", so I am not sure what you mean. Maproom (talk) 21:31, 17 December 2012 (UTC)
- Maybe the IP is referring to the STV show "Country Matters"?--ukexpat (talk) 21:36, 17 December 2012 (UTC)
- You are welcome to contribute an article on anything which interests you, but you are strongly advised to read WP:your first article, and to understand that the information in the article should come from reliable sources independent of the subject: information from your own knowledge is not acceptable unless it is supported by references. --ColinFine (talk) 00:01, 18 December 2012 (UTC)
Metadata quality assessment
Legal system of Saudi Arabia recently became a GA and the reviewer duly posted {{good article}} on the top of the article. I have the display of the metadata script showing articles' quality assessment enabled - but for some reason I'm seeing its pre-GA status being displayed (as well as the GA icon). I've purged the cache - but it's still showing. Is it still showing as a "B" to anyone else? If so why? DeCausa (talk) 22:24, 17 December 2012 (UTC)
- Nope – showing good article status everywhere for me. Have you tried bypassing your cache? After refreshing twice or so using Safari, I usually can get it to update the assessment rank. The Anonymouse (talk • contribs) 22:45, 17 December 2012 (UTC)

PHILIPP PLEIN Urgent
Dear,
I´m Ludivine Pont, Marketing manager at PHILIPP PLEIN, our page has to be totally modified. As soon as I make modifications it automatically cancel.
Would you be so kind to help me?
Thank you — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ludivineplein (talk • contribs) 09:58, 18 December 2012 (UTC)
- If you're their marketing manager then you should avoid editing that article, as you have a conflict of interest. Content such as "PHILIPP PLEIN. A brand. A way of being. A strong identity. Luxury beyond all convention for a brand..." fails Misplaced Pages's core policy of neutrality and does not belong in an encyclopedia. You are welcome to suggest additions at Talk:Philipp Plein for review by other contributors. Adrian J. Hunter 10:05, 18 December 2012 (UTC)
- You may find Misplaced Pages:FAQ/Organizations helpful. Adrian J. Hunter 10:07, 18 December 2012 (UTC)
- I added a COI, welcome, and note to the user's talk page. Jim1138 (talk) 10:08, 18 December 2012 (UTC)
- When I (and, I suspect most readers) see "PHILIPP PLEIN. A brand. A way of being. A strong identity. Luxury beyond all convention for a brand", I think "what a load of drivel, this whole article is worthless advertising and should be deleted". You should be grateful that an editor has been kind enough to revert it to something sensible and positive. Maproom (talk) 10:26, 18 December 2012 (UTC)
Revised article submitted but not showing
URL: User:Gerry Cranham
I have recently re-submitted an article on the above photographer 'Gerry Cranham'. It was removed the first time it was posted because of 'unambiguous self-promotion'. This has now been revised and updated but the article is still not showing when I search for it on Misplaced Pages. Any help would be appreciated. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gerry Cranham (talk • contribs) 10:59, 18 December 2012 (UTC)
- It is a Misplaced Pages editor's 'private' page now. If you intended to create a Misplaced Pages article, it should be moved from the User space to the global article space: User:Gerry Cranham → Gerry Cranham.
CiaPan (talk) 11:04, 18 December 2012 (UTC)
- The article is still located in your userspace, rather than in article space. It is still grossly self-promotional, laden with peacock terms, and lacking any reliable sources. It is completely unsuitable for Misplaced Pages.
- Because of your clear conflict of interest (I take it from your username that you are Gerry Cranham) you should not be the person to create this article - we have a guideline that strongly discourages autobiographies. If you believe that you are genuinely notable enough for an article on Misplaced Pages, I suggest you add a listing to the Requested Articles board so that another, unbiased editor can have a go at creating the page. Hi john, can you please remove Michael Tawiah page as he did not give premission to write about him there?--Ananenkova (talk) 12:00, 19 December 2012 (UTC)
- No, I don't have the right to delete pages myself, and the page looks well-sourced to me. In any case, the existence of a Misplaced Pages article does not depend on permission from the article subject. I've had a look through the discussion, now closed, at Misplaced Pages:Biographies of living persons/Noticeboard#Michael Tawiah, and the advice there is that you should post at Talk:Michael Tawiah if the article still contains anything you disagree with. -- John of Reading (talk) 12:09, 19 December 2012 (UTC)

Question about closing a talk page discussion
Is an editor who has actively participated in a talk page discussion allowed to archive/close it? This was an edit request and the discussion was only open for one hour. IP 213 archived it. I read a guideline somehwere that said a participating editor should never close a discussion; that only a neutral editor should do it. But I can't find it. Would this be considered "original research"? - I simply want to put a date on an illustration from an old newspaper; and can do so. However...
The newspaper was published during the siege of Paris, 1870-71, (under an alias, delivered by balloon). I found out that during a certain period of time when the illustration in question was published, the illustrations were an insert (Engraving of the News) for the Thursday editions, and that the illustration in question was in the 2nd insert, and therefore the date would be the 2nd Thursday of January 1871. I have a source with illustrations in sequence, but no specified date - and a source dating the period of publication. Once I figure out what date the 2nd Thursday, Jan 1871 was, I'll have the date the illustration was published. Original research? (Explaining this in the article would place undue emphasis on something with limited relevance, although the date is somewhat important - in other words, the explanation would be longer than the actual item: a caption.) ~Eric F:74.60.29.141 (talk) 20:54, 18 December 2012 (UTC)
- Yup, I'm afraid that's original research and synthesis. --Orange Mike | Talk 21:14, 18 December 2012 (UTC)
- It seems, though, that it is alright to add such information to an image description in Wikimedia Commons if you want to. --Saddhiyama (talk) 21:38, 18 December 2012 (UTC)
- Okay, thanks (more or less),, ~E:74.60.29.141 (talk) 21:53, 18 December 2012 (UTC) Btw, the date would be 12 January 1871
- It seems, though, that it is alright to add such information to an image description in Wikimedia Commons if you want to. --Saddhiyama (talk) 21:38, 18 December 2012 (UTC)

BLP on a talk page.
Is it appropriate to remove comments made by a user on their own talk page in the course of a discussion if you believe they violate BLP policy?
I had a look over at the Misplaced Pages:Biographies of living persons/Noticeboard, but that's for issues that have a definite concern, whereas I only have a theoretical question based on the above.
Given that fact that a conversation prompting such talk may not be entirely civil, and that you would almost certainly be involved in the discussion, would it not be antagonistic to do such a thing - but on the other hand, if you think a comment breaches BLP, should you not remove it anyway? Chaheel Riens (talk) 22:44, 18 December 2012 (UTC)
- Explain why you disagree - don't remove somebody else's comments on their own talk page (especially under heading Controversy). ~:74.60.29.141 (talk) 23:16, 18 December 2012 (UTC)
- Sorry, but that's just wrong. From the BLP policy: "Editors must take particular care when adding information about living persons to any Misplaced Pages page" (emphasis in original), "his policy applies to any living person mentioned in a BLP, whether or not that person is the subject of the article, and to material about living persons in other articles and on other pages, including talk pages" (my emphasis) and "Contentious material about living persons (or recently deceased) that is unsourced or poorly sourced—whether the material is negative, positive, neutral, or just questionable—should be removed immediately and without waiting for discussion" (emphasis in original). If someone is violating the BLP policy on their own talkpage, even if you are already in a dispute with them, it is both acceptable and appropriate to remove their comments. Yunshui 雲水 23:17, 18 December 2012 (UTC)
- The "contentious material" was tangential in regard to a person - referring to: "made-up body core temperature bars shown with that footage - no temperature sensors are present" - etc. Talk:Richard Hammond: Difference between revisions ~:74.60.29.141 (talk) 23:46, 18 December 2012 (UTC) - (...in reference to a TV show on BBC) 74.60.29.141 (talk) 23:51, 18 December 2012 (UTC)

- Talkpages are not for discussing TV shows. You don't get to use Misplaced Pages as a venue for slagging off any celebrity you don't happen to like - there are countless websites that exist for that sole purpose, but this isn't one of them. Talkpages exist to discuss improvements to articles, and are not forums in which to vent your bile. Yunshui 雲水 08:03, 19 December 2012 (UTC)
- It wasn't actually the comments on Hammond's talk page that I was questioning - they were obviously BLP violations - but rather this edit which made me wonder about BLP issues on a users own talk page. It seems like a BLP issue, and personal attack - accusing me of being a sycophant - but I wondered what a non-confrontational resolution would be. Not sure if it would be appropriate for me to respond, given that I'm now also the target. Chaheel Riens (talk) 10:04, 19 December 2012 (UTC)
- I've left the user a message. I agree that his statement is inappropriate - it may not violate BLP (statistically, most men are tossers, in a purely technical sense...) and "sycophant" is hardly the worst personal attack I've seen here, but the tone and attitude are deeply unconstructive. Best case scenario, he apologises and you can both go about your business, worst case scenario, we end up with DR or a block. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for the former. Your advise on editing a page that has no data but a single word title
Dear Editor
The page "Anagnostis" exists already but just as a redirect to "Reader (liturgy) ". During the next few weeks I would like to contribute to the page "Anagnostis" the meaning and origin of which is not only relative to the Church. Can you please give me the steps as to how to edit the title of the page "Anagnostis", also adding new data, but without eliminating the so called redirect to "Reader"? Many thanks Anagnostis Agelarakis 96.250.15.153 (talk) 00:58, 19 December 2012 (UTC)
- You would edit the redirect page to removed the redirect code and add your content. But note that the article your create must comply with Misplaced Pages's policies and guidelines, particularly WP:GNG and WP:RS. See WP:YFA for further assistance.--ukexpat (talk) 01:59, 19 December 2012 (UTC)

- I added info about Alyssa becoming your manager in March 2012 (there were several news stories on that and I picked the first one i came across). However, I did not find any newspaper source mentioning that Alyssa Harvey now is your fiancée. If you know of a URL link to a newspaper source mentioning that Alyssa Harvey now is your fiancée, this will allow us to add the information to the Alex Čejka article. -- Uzma Gamal (talk) 07:23, 19 December 2012 (UTC)

Account help
I don't know why, but when I signed up for a wiki account I didn't register an email address. I've now forgotten the password I registered with, and can only stay logged in because of the cookie. I also can't register an email address and request a new password because of the necessary password. Cookies are only for 180 days, so I might lose access soon. Does anyone have any ideas on how to reset the password (I've tried guessing it on a different browser several times). — Preceding unsigned comment added by 私の旅 (talk • contribs) 09:40, 19 December 2012 (UTC)
- If you use Firefox and have the password saved, you can go to the Firefox options and click on Security. Then click on Saved Passwords and then Show Passwords. It will show you your Misplaced Pages password. If this is not the case, there may be a similar way in whatever browser you do use. Also, there may be a way for someone on the Misplaced Pages end of things can help. I don't know that but someone may be along shortly to make a suggestion there. Rizzoma
why does wikipedia not use Rizzoma? So would all be able to figure out how to edit, correct, and roll back. However, lack Rizzoma to be mature before it can be used, but it probably is not that long, so later you can maybe use it?--89.249.2.53 (talk) 11:22, 19 December 2012 (UTC)
- Thank you for your suggestion. However, we seem to be managing quite well with the Wikimedia software currently in place. Yunshui 雲水 14:13, 19 December 2012 (UTC)
- I'm not familiar with Rizzoma. The editors who hang out at WP:VPT are more likely to know something about it, and have more informed feedback on whether it would be a good substitute. It would be quite a big deal, not something to be taken lightly, but the editors there can give you better feedback.--SPhilbrick(Talk) 15:09, 19 December 2012 (UTC)
Navigating between Commons and actual text page
Hi! I have just uploaded a number of images which I now want to copy and paste into my Wiki page. - To jump from Misplaced Pages to the list of uploads at Commons, click on "Contributions" at the top right, then "uploads" in the row of small links at the top of your contributions page, then the "See also" link near the top of the "File list" page. -- John of Reading (talk) 12:25, 19 December 2012 (UTC)

- Hello Help desk, and welcome to Misplaced Pages. While we appreciate your contributing to Misplaced Pages, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from your sources to avoid copyright or plagiarism issues here.
- You can only copy/translate a small amount of a source, and you must mark what you take as a direct quotation with double quotation marks (") and a cited source. You can read about this at Misplaced Pages:Non-free content in the sections on "text". See also Misplaced Pages:Referencing for beginners, for how to cite sources here.
- Aside from limited quotation, you must put all information in your own words and structure, in proper paraphrase. Following the source's words too closely can create copyright problems, so it is not permitted here; see Misplaced Pages:Close paraphrasing. (There is a college level introduction to paraphrase, with examples, hosted by the Online Writing Lab of Purdue.) Even when using your own words, you are still, however, asked to cite your sources to verify information and to demonstrate that the content is not original research.
- Our primary policy on using copyrighted content is Misplaced Pages:Copyrights. You may also want to review Misplaced Pages:Copy-paste.
- In very rare cases (that is, for sources that are public domain or compatibly licensed), it may be possible to include greater portions of a source text. However, please seek help at the help desk before adding such content to the article. 99.9% of sources may not be added in this way, so it is necessary to seek confirmation first. If you do confirm that a source is public domain or compatibly licensed, you will still need to provide full attribution; see Misplaced Pages:Plagiarism for the steps you need to follow.
- Also note that Misplaced Pages articles may not be copied without attribution. If you want to copy from another Misplaced Pages project or article, you can, but please follow the steps in Misplaced Pages:Copying within Misplaced Pages.
It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices, as policy requires that people who persistently do not must be blocked from editing. If you have any questions about this, you are welcome to leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. --Orange Mike | Talk 20:36, 19 December 2012 (UTC)

- Anyone who has been at Misplaced Pages for longer than a week will quickly realize that new users who try to add content about companies they work for, for the express purpose of promoting that company, get their work deleted vanishingly close to 100% of the time. It isn't worth trying to explain the difference to a new user between "You could technically do it if you had years of experience at Misplaced Pages and were able to work within our rather strict policies and guidelines well enough to make this workable for your company" and "Really, just don't". The latter explanation works well enough for preventing the user from hating Misplaced Pages, which is what happens every single time someone tries to create an article about their employer because their boss told them to. --Jayron32 15:01, 20 December 2012 (UTC)

How do I enable "Article Feedback Tool v.4" of Misplaced Pages on another wikimedia wiki? Thanks Raoli (talk) 21:42, 19 December 2012 (UTC)
- Hello. Your question seems to be related to another wiki. A wiki is any website using wiki software, of which there are thousands. Please note that you are at Misplaced Pages, the 💕 that anyone can edit, and this page is a help desk for asking questions related to using this wiki. Thus, we are unable to assist you in matters concerning this unrelated website and the best course of action may be to seek appropriate avenues of help there. Alternatively, if your question concerns a problem or feature of the MediaWiki software on which many wikis are run, you could try the MediaWiki support desk. We also have a reference desk section dedicated to helping with computing related questions. Best of luck. --Orange Mike | Talk 21:49, 19 December 2012 (UTC)

Use of convert template
Hello,
I am confused how to use the convert template the way I want to use it.
I want to convert 1.2 million sq m to ft, and display both; but I cannot let the million be written as 1,200,000. Is there any way/any bypass to solve this?
P.S. - Please leave the answer/Talkback on my talk page.
Thanks, TheOriginalSoni (talk) 16:06, 20 December 2012 (UTC)
- Have you read the documentation at Template:Convert?--ukexpat (talk) 16:29, 20 December 2012 (UTC)

- Use "{{Convert|1200000|m2|sqft|abbr=comma}}" to display 1,200,000 square metres (13,000,000 sq ft), but note that this is a limited, temporary option, until an alternative can be implemented. jonkerz ♠talk 19:31, 20 December 2012 (UTC)
- Thats exactly the sort of thing which turns a reader away; which I dont want. Is there no other bypass/alternative to it?

Dear Misplaced Pages,
Please Help! Someone claiming to be Jackie Kong is using Misplaced Pages as a platform to post malicious lies and insults on the Jackie Kong listing. Jackie Kong is a living person so therefore Misplaced Pages should take extra care to ensure reliable information is presented. Please block whoever is posting these malicious rants which started last week (looking in the posting history). I'm sure that who-ever is posting thinks it is funny to post crude comments but they are untrue and slanderous and libelious. They also changed Ms Kong's official website reference.
If Misplaced Pages continues to permit people to viciously attack Ms Kong using it's website, then we shall hold Misplaced Pages responsible for any damage to her reputation and career. Please block offending party and protect the integrity of your website as a source for reliable information. We find it disturbing that unreliable sources are able to use Misplaced Pages as an attack platform. This is our official notification and please investigate and make the necessary corrections. We've tried to correct using IMBd's information about Ms. Kong.
Thank you for help in this matter.
Representative for Jackie Kong.

- Blocked indefinitely for a multitude of sins, including legal threats, BLP violations
and sockpuppetry (Jackiekong (talk · contribs)). Favonian (talk) 19:21, 20 December 2012 (UTC) Struck the allegation of sockpuppetry. Obviously just a regular vandal. Favonian (talk) 19:36, 20 December 2012 (UTC)
- I reverted the page in question to remove obvious vandalism and the cease and desist notice as WP does not tolerate either, especially legal threats of any kind, but before I could notify the user, he/she was blocked by Favonian for numerous issues. JC.Torpey (talk) 19:24, 20 December 2012 (UTC)
