A new school was built because the land on which the Convent stood was taken by ] for development. Development, however, was stalled leaving an abandoned project. This was due to the stagnation of water, three storeys deep. The developers abandoned the site which now sits as a huge, unused lake in the centre of town.

A plot of land near Taman AST was chosen to build the new school. On the 8 July 1993, the ground breaking ceremony was performed by the Menteri Besar, YAB Dato’ Seri Utama Sri Mohd Isa Bin Dato’ Haji Abdul Samad. The school was renamed '''SMK Puteri'''.

SMK Puteri has three blocks of three floors, two blocks of two floors and two blocks of one level.
