' Misplaced Pages is a big wide wonderful world. So, it should be a seldom occurrence that two editors find themselves seated next to each other at the same bar at the same hotel in the same city, each wondering why the other editors fat ass is encroaching into his personal space'

THIS IS A BLOCK FREE and a DON'T HASSLE MY COMPANY ZONE

As of this moment, this talk page is a 'BLOCK FREE' Zone. Any previous bans or other editor restrictions are rescinded and no longer enforcable. Blatant and obvious (although, who's to say what's obvious) acts of in-civility will not be tolerated. They will, however, not be punishable. (kinda like when your Mom told you to stop wiping your boogers off on the dining room table)```Buster Seven Talk 13:51, 15 October 2012 (UTC)

"First they came…"

is a famous statement attributed to Pastor Martin Niemöller (1892–1984) about the inactivity of German intellectuals following the Nazi rise to power and the purging of their chosen targets, group after group. The text of the quotation is usually presented roughly as follows:

First they came for the communists,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a communist.

Then they came for the trade unionists,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a Jew.

Then they came for me
and there was no one left to speak out for me.

Thanks

I am writing to tell you both thanks for the compliment and the barnstar. I am sending this exact same note to both Buster7 and Dennis Brown. After much soul searching and weighing of time commitments, I have decided to go ahead and help out at WP:WER. Ok, the truth: My wife said I could! I would not be here at all except for this particular project and one of its efforts, The Teahouse. The encouragement and instruction I got there got me through the difficult early times. Also, much credit goes to Bmusician, who graciously adopted me. You singled out some of my best efforts, but you should know that I have had some moments where I have been not so nice too. I had an especially ugly incident at Misplaced Pages:Reliable sources/Noticeboard that I thought for sure was going to get me sanctioned, but I just let it drop and that was the end of it. I am hoping through my involvement with this project, I can learn how to get answers to questions like the one that took me there.

So, what do I do now? Gtwfan52 (talk) 23:19, 16 August 2012 (UTC)

  • First and foremost----Thank your wife. A supportive spouse is invaluable. If she is like mine, she will help keep you calm when you start to "boil".
  • Continue to do what you do and, as DB points out, have fun with it. A part of our pay (you are getting your payroll deposit, right?) should not be aggrevation. Myself, I welcome new editors, edit articles that I stumble upon while researching, support or oppose at {WP:RfA]]'s, roam around looking for fires to put out, keep fellow editor foccussed on being collaborators rather than adversaries, etc., etc., etc.
  • My favorite quote lately is; “Let’s treat each other as if we plan to work side by side for many years to come. Let’s treat this work as if it’s one of the most important things on the Internet. Because, to some, it is.”
  • Continue to teach when the opportunity shows itself. Most of your students will ignore you. But the ones that don't are treasures.

TRA! ```Buster Seven Talk 05:48, 17 August 2012 (UTC)

D Brown's reply from his talk

  • You do what brings you joy. You help others, you can hang out and read a bit at WP:WER from time to time, you just do what comes natural. It should be fun and rewarding, so you do what you enjoy most, and you will be good at doing it. As for having a bad day, I've been here almost 6 years, rest assured, I've had bad days. I didn't go for being an admin until well over 5 years, and my first couple of years were a little rough. No one expect perfection, but we do appreciate good faith efforts to make Misplaced Pages a better place, and you seem a natural at that. Dennis Brown - © Join WER 23:27, 16 August 2012 (UTC)

Hornet's Nest

We are Misplaced Pages collaborators not Internet adversaries. The “back and forth” between editors MUST be congenial. For generations, writers of all kinds have corresponded. In order to maintain a working relationship they rarely, if ever, attacked each other. We do not create articles or edit them in isolation. By "Leave the room" I don't mean back down....just "back up". When you stumble upon a hornets nest, you don't keep hitting it. You back up...for your own well-being. The hornets are not going to change. They like being hornets. You tried ANI. Neither of you are satisfied with the results. But many editors and admins saw what happened and will file it in their memory. I don't like bullies/hornets any more than you two do. I just have learned not to get stung. The article isn't going anywhere. Watch it and wait for com-patriots. WP editing should be enjoyable, not aggravating. ```Buster Seven Talk 08:14, 17 August 2012 (UTC) Reply to Ihardlythinkso (talk) 09:02, 17 August 2012 (UTC)

There are many jobs at the Zoo. And Many Many happy workers. Pick a job that needs doing. And be happy. Leaving the Zoo is always an option. I love this Zoo. Maybe that's the difference. What you call "zoo" is just one of the hundreds (or is it hundreds of thousands) of enviroments here. I would suggest you leave the zoo and find an environment more condusive to your greatness. Or stay in the zoo and be fretful and unhappy. ``Buster Seven Talk 09:19, 17 August 2012 (UTC)

You SOOOO are going to pay for that Terry Bradshaw comment. signed A Pittsburgh Fan.

{== To answer your question ==

There is no such user as User:Dangerous Panda - it's merely a signature that links to my actual account. However, if you click on User talk:Bwilkins or indeed User:EatsShootsAndLeaves, you can see that the two accounts are validly linked, as per the policy on alternate accounts. Feel free to ask me directly if you have further questions dangerouspanda 20:56, 2 October 2012 (UTC)

Why do you sign as dangerous panda? Isn't that confusing to the unsuspecting reader. Should we really expect our readers to go to the talk page of every editor they encounter to see if they have an alternate acct. and they might be editing under two or more user names? Or that User:Buster7 sometimes calls himself User:MusclesfromBrussels? I think it just confuses things without any real purpose. Unless there is a real purpose. I only now realized that the three names you edit under were one in the same person. I see now that the two accounts are linked but it is definitely not obvious. Do you have multiple personalities? I don't get it. What's the point? ```Buster Seven Talk 21:37, 2 October 2012 (UTC)
Please go to WP:CHU and see the section entitled Please consider the following alternatives to a rename - it discusses exactly what I'm doing. The linking of the accounts is obvious - all you have to do is click, as per policy. I will also assume you've gone through my contributions and found this. dangerouspanda 21:45, 2 October 2012 (UTC)
1)No. I have not gone thru your contributions. I will read it later this evening. 2) I will also go to WP:CHU later to see what it says. Thanks for the info. 3)No. It is not obvious. It is hidden in a Userbox. A clear bolded explanation across the top of the two user pages would be obvious. Userboxes are not obvious. They are like pictures on a wall at the library. Obvious only if I look at them. ```Buster Seven Talk 21:56, 2 October 2012 (UTC)
"Hidden in a userbox"? According to policy that's the preferred manner. The better question is this: why didn't you ask me - instead you asked another editor who had similar problems to those mentioned below dangerouspanda 09:05, 3 October 2012 (UTC)
Buster...I feel ya on this one! LOL! This has been a point of contention for many users who feel that some editors are allowed more accounts then the policy actually allows, but as another editor and admin just mentioned to me...multiple accounts are not a problem...just when they are abused. The editor has indeed followed policy and proceedure...but you are also correct that this just confuses people. It would help if all editors were expected to use one single registered account...but who knows what mess that would create now.--Amadscientist (talk) 00:48, 3 October 2012 (UTC)
Would you want an admin editing from the local hacked library computer, and have their password captured? dangerouspanda 09:05, 3 October 2012 (UTC)
Everywhere you go Panda, this subject comes up. Isn't it about time you do something about it?   — Jason Sosa 10:26, 3 October 2012 (UTC)
...and you were advised by more than one admin that you were going to be blocked if you kept it up, right? dangerouspanda 08:39, 4 October 2012 (UTC)
I am allowed to make observations, especially when the subject occurs post September with other editors. Thanks,   — Jason Sosa 13:40, 4 October 2012 (UTC)
No sir, you were advised to stop commenting about my usernames because as noted to you a billion times, nothing is wrong. You are merely continuing you harassment. Stop dangerouspanda 21:33, 4 October 2012 (UTC)
It was determined in September that I was on a mission against you. I desisted from said mission. As a wikipedian, I can make observations especially when other editors make the same observations before me.  — Jason Sosa 15:19, 5 October 2012 (UTC)
Please note the thread below. This as a block free zone and a Don't hassle my company zone. If you want to chastise Jason for being naughty, please do it elswhere. Thank You. ```Buster Seven Talk 21:45, 4 October 2012 (UTC)

@ Admin/User:BWilkins. I didn't ask you because my experience has been that you are a bit too aggresive for my taste, you are unwilling to admit any fault on your part and that you become defensive at the sign of percieved slight/frustration. As to your multiple accts, I really had no idea it was alraedy a topic of wide discussion. I was just curious. That's all. No harm intended.BTW..I have yet to look at your suggested readings from above. I'll do that now. ```Buster Seven Talk 13:01, 3 October 2012 (UTC)

Buster, I don't recall us having negative interactions :-) dangerouspanda 08:39, 4 October 2012 (UTC)
I am a Misplaced Pages Wanderer. I am basically referring to interactions you have had with other editors, that I have witnessed. We did have a slight conversation. Don't remember where. It was not pleasant. ```Buster Seven Talk 12:30, 4 October 2012 (UTC)

An easy way to add references

Just follow the steps 1, 2 and 3 as shown and fill in the details

Here's how to add references from reliable sources for the content you add to Misplaced Pages (which helps maintain our policy of verifiability). Adding a well formatted references is very easy to do.

  1. While editing any article or a wikipage, on the top of the edit window you will see a toolbar which says "Cite"...click on it.
  2. Then click on "Templates".
  3. Choose the most appropriate template and just fill as many details as you can, this will add a well formatted reference that would be helpful in case the website link (web URL) becomes inactive (dead/link rot) after some time.
  4. Click on Show preview to make sure that the reference looks the way you want.
  5. Click on Save page to save your edits.

You can read more about it on Help:Edit toolbar or see this video File:RefTools.ogv. Hope this helps, Shearonink (talk) 19:29, 20 October 2012 (UTC)

huh....I did not realise this. Glad I stalked Busters page today! LOL! ;)--Amadscientist (talk) 23:36, 22 October 2012 (UTC)

Inspiration; Appreciation

Hello. I am a new contributor who very randomly stumbled upon your sandbox zipping through the "Recent changes" list. After reading many of your ideas and advoctaions in your user pages, I became really inspired that there is a right kind of approach to the whole editing experience here. I wanted to thank you for the apparently focused effort you've given to fostering the right kind of communication. I agree very much with your line of thinking. I have some trepidation about getting into this wiki stuff, mostly for fear of running against some other editor. Or fear of my own inexperience. I believe I can contribute to the community, and I shall do my best to! Wateresque (talk) 15:36, 24 October 2012 (UTC)

Thank you for your kind words. I'm off to do some chores but "I'll be back".--Buster Seven Talk 15:44, 24 October 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for the barnstar you left me; it's a nice gesture! Good to meet you also. I noticed that this item was created specifically in your honor. How cool :D Wateresque (talk) 16:32, 25 October 2012 (UTC)

re: high schools in Chicagoland

Thanks. They really tick me off, too. BTW, I hail from NW Indiana originally and have always considered Chicagoland home. One vital question: Cubs or Sox? The Cubbies all the way for me. I am just sorry Boise will be losing their farm team next season. Gtwfan52 (talk) 21:37, 25 October 2012 (UTC)

On another subject...heavy wikicode baffles me. You have talked about your welcoming messages at WER. Have you ever considered asking someone to template-ize them for you so others can easily use them? Gtwfan52 (talk) 21:39, 25 October 2012 (UTC)
Cubs 100% since 1951. I grew up watching and enjoying both, but the Cubs were always on when I got home from grade school. Then I attended De Paul Academy in the '60's when we could get off at Addison and go in the park for free after the seventh inning stretch. As to the WER Welcome---Sure I wouldn't mind templating them. Right now I just go to a previous days welcome talk page, erase my signature, resign (to change the time signature), C&P all, cancel the edit, and I'm good to go. I'll send you a copy of the welcome I'm currently using. It's crisp and clean and adding a personal message at the end, when required, is easy. Off to Work! ```Buster Seven Talk 22:05, 25 October 2012 (UTC)
Same here about the games after school on WGN...followed by Garfield Goose! I used to ditch school in junior high and high school, ride the Pennsy dinkie (the commuter train from Valparaiso) to Union Station, take the EL to Addison and spend the whole day at the park. $10 and a totally great day...more than worth the detention. I'd take the South Shore to Gary and ride home with my dad from work, and mom was never the wiser. Dad thought it was great! I have been having a really bad couple of weeks...thank you so much for the happy thoughts. I really needed them! Gtwfan52 (talk) 22:25, 25 October 2012 (UTC)
Something is afoot and it's a size 15EEE.```Buster Seven Talk 16:32, 27 October 2012 (UTC)

Good Advice

  • From dialogue with User:Imprompt2 (without bolding)

This is very important to understand. Your comment implies a fellow editor is intentionally trying to harm you. It displays a complete misunderstanding of our mutual roles here at Misplaced Pages. Editor User:Cindamuse is not your adversary. She is your fellow editor, fellow collaborator, fellow teacher. She has ONLY the best intentions for the article. That you can be sure of. To continually imply otherwise shows you really don't yet understand the role of your fellow editors. Most times new editors are concerned only with the article they have just created. But, experienced editors like Cindamuse are more concerned with the Encyclopedia as a whole. I know you are a new user and you hold this the article and your edits to it and your word choices and your particular references as precious and you can't bear to see them changed. You have great pride in your work and rightfully so. But saving it in its original form has become a mission. Because you have misunderstood some basic facts, you see experienced editors like Cindamuse as having a "cruel hands". That could not be further from the truth. Once you change your opinion of her and what she is doing you will be on the path to a happier Misplaced Pages career. It's always up to you. ```Buster Seven Talk 08:18, 4 November 2012 (UTC)

  • From President Obama's 11/15/12 News Conference regarding the Fiscal Cliff:
"....fair-minded people CAN come to agreement. Compromise is hard...not everyon gets what they want."

tools

Hi, Buster! hey, you will find a whole page of tools here. There are two that I find really useful...Reflinks and Dab Solver. They actually have the landing page for Dab Solver set up kinda like a game, so you can go to a subject area that you have some knowledge on and get a list of pages needing disambiguation. It is kinda fun. Reflinks you use on a page that has bare URL references and it grabs metadata from the webpage and fills out the "cite web" template for the reference automatically. Hope you have some fun and relaxation in your wikiworld with them. Gtwfan52 (talk) 03:53, 8 November 2012 (UTC)

The whole Wiki model is a community

  • You make a strong argument that Misplaced Pages and the whole Wiki model is a community. People aren’t going to Misplaced Pages to write funny posts or do pranks — this is a committed group of people who genuinely come to know one another. Is that communal aspect part of the reason Misplaced Pages has worked so well?
    • Yes. Something that fascinates outsiders is how seriously people consider these policies. The type of conversations you have on Misplaced Pages are the kinds you’d see in newspaper newsrooms or at an academic faculty meeting. What are the criteria for making sure something is verifiable? What are the policies we should implement to include a lot of people but also ensure quality? There is thoughtful deliberation behind the management of millions of articles. This is not a top-down model but a very Quaker-esque consensus model.
  • You also mention this theory called the Piranha effect, which, to really roughly summarize, is that if you have a bunch of people nibbling on the same subject, they’ll devour it really well. With their new policies, is Misplaced Pages now moving away from that and becoming more hierarchical, reliant on experts, which is exactly what they were against when they started?
    • Encyclopedia writing was a perfect match for Wiki style. Encyclopedia writing is pretty well understood — using the inverted pyramid, where the first three sentences give a complete summary of what you’re about to read and as you go down the article gives you an elaboration of the basic information. It’s very structured data.

I think it was a God thing

that I saw that mish-mash. The AfC got denied by my (I thought) retired adopter. I didn't know he was back, and seeing that he was made me very happy! Gtwfan52 (talk) 07:09, 29 November 2012 (UTC)

regarding the User:Nicki...etc situation. I remembered something from The Age of Faith by Sam Harris. I repeat it her for whatever its worth: "The human psyche has two great sicknesses:the urge to carry vendetta across generations and the tendancy to attach group labels on people rather than see them as individuals." Once she tagged us as non-believers, heathens, enemies of her cause, all was lost. She would have needed to forsake her tribe in order to agree with us. No amount of reasoning was going to work. Some are lost causes that need to be identified early. Otherwise we waste our time and effort and we run the risk of burn-out. ```Buster Seven Talk 07:14, 29 November 2012 (UTC)

I hear you. The two things that have distressed me the most during my time here both involved religion. I never edit religion articles for just the reasons you cited, and I could kick myself for getting involved in the thing the other day. That was one. The other was a new user that started off impinging another editors ability to read because he disagreed with her. When I told her that wasn't cool and she should apologize to him, she responded by demeaning my religious beliefs. And both editors fall into the category "people who insist wikipedia do things their way." It is frustrating. I guess i should expect it. The very nature of wikipedia would tend to attract people with above average intelligence and below average social skills. Still discouraging tho. Gtwfan52 (talk) 07:28, 29 November 2012 (UTC)

I remember that. Once that kind of wild out-of-left field blind religious faith surfaces, its over. The light bulb over your head gets brighter, you realize the time trap and, instead, you move on. BTW....I see you found your mentor. Congrats!! I lost mine 2 years ago. I can imagine how I would feel overjoyed if he returned. ```Buster Seven Talk 07:37, 29 November 2012 (UTC)
I commend your effort to move the discussion along. I saw that you had invited an old friend User:Hydroxonium who has been inactive for many months. Its late (4AM here) and I admit I got a bit piqued. I'm glad we cleared the air. As I'm sure you well know WP can be a repository for unspoken resentments. Not that this was one but they all start somewhere with some slight misunderstanding or some unresolved little glitch in communication. Good Luck with this very important "Conference". I hold it and your efforts in high esteem. ```Buster Seven Talk 10:09, 29 November 2012 (UTC)

Thanks

Thank you for the lovely message - and a timely reminder. Deb (talk) 15:08, 12 December 2012 (UTC)

I'll just add my thanks to this section instead of creating a new one. Happy Holidays, Buster7! I hope you experience the same peace you described in your message.Wateresque (talk) 17:01, 12 December 2012 (UTC)

I know a guy who knows a guy"". At those kind of society tragedy articles Ive found that some editors get into beefs with each other that stretch over multiple threads and multiple days. It starts to wear on all the parties, participants and observors alike, and pretty soon a punch is thrown. A collegiate word to everybody reminds every body especially those that care about the encyclopedia. The ones that don't get the reminder deserve watching. They don't play by the same rules. ```Buster Seven Talk 08:44, 17 December 2012 (UTC)

Leaky homes crisis

Hi, you offered me help as a new editor a while ago, so here goes: The Leaky homes crisis page needs work, for a few reasons, balance being one. It is a tricky subject, as blame is part of it, and therefore needs a more experienced hand than mine. One example is the second bullet point in the first section: "Many developers, builders and architects involved knowingly or carelessly constructed buildings with numerous faults and short-cuts." The reference given for this doesn't say anything like it anywhere in the piece. I am not sure how this should be corrected. Change the reference to citation needed? Thanks.OnHawkspur (talk) 01:14, 19 December 2012 (UTC)

I'll give it a more thorough look tomorrow. Either we change or omit the sentance to fit the reference or we search out a reference that fits the charge. I have a High Beam account and there are 623 articles on this subject. It might take awhile. ```Buster Seven Talk 02:24, 19 December 2012 (UTC)

Dear good Sir...

...Please could you fix the oddball barnstar on my talk? I much appreciate it but for reasons beyond my very limited comprehension subsequent edits appear within the barnstar box and I'd like them separated. (E.g. the Signpost, which I have deleted.) Muchas gracias! Writegeist (talk) 23:47, 21 December 2012 (UTC)

I have dispatched a demo crew. In error they removed the wrong barnstar. I'm sorry to report that it was destroyed in the process and will not be replaced. I wll send them back to your "man-cave" and have them remove the offensive "Oddball Barnstar". I have given them special instructions not to walk thru the pansies. I know how precious they are to you. Chores! ```Buster Seven Talk 01:33, 22 December 2012 (UTC)
Ah yes my precious pansies. Thank you for your consideration. I'm sad to see my hollyhocks are all snapped, but that might be just the doing of the end-times storm. Which fortunately wasn't quite powerful enough to completely end our times. However, wreaking havoc on the world's hollyhocks is a respectable start, and my Mayan connections tell me there should be sufficient fire and brimstone to do the trick by about Friday next week. RfC/U

An RfC/U has been started here and I hereby canvass you to check it out and add your view there if it agrees with mine, and to add your name in support of my view. Thanking you in advance. If you live in a parallel universe where your world has ended because of the Mayan calendar thing, I shall quite understand if you do not respond to this notice. Editors on the Fence

I'm sure as we all wander around WikiWorld we come across an editor whose decision to stay or go is hanging in the balance. The one I have in mind is User:My76Strat. If you know him or have concern for him, stop by and give him a peptalk. I hope you ALL don't run over with milk and cookies, but a friendly hello goes a long way to remind a fellow editor that it should be fun to edit. Also, this brings to mind the need for a subpage that WE can refer to for editors that are on "The Fence". In fact, if I can be so bold, I'd like to suggest that WE call it ""WER/The Fence"". WE can each check periodically for editors we might know or have worked with or whatever. Retaining editors is our challenge. Eventually we will have dozens of ways we are accomplishing our goal. ```Buster Seven Talk 21:50, 22 December 2012 (UTC)

Hi there

Hello Buster. As you are around could you help me to solve the issue that I just noted at the TP of Ottoman Empire? (I tried to do it myself but am afraid to cut my finger... :-) Joke apart, I hope you are better than me in these IT techniques... Thanks in advance, good pal. --E4024 (talk) 22:48, 23 December 2012 (UTC)

Flamethrowers

I propose replacing ALL guns and firearms with flamethrowers since flamethrowers pose many risks to the operator of the flamethrower.

  • The first disadvantage was the weapon's weight, which impairs the operator's mobility.
  • The weapon is limited to only a few seconds of burn time since it uses fuel very quickly, requiring the operator to be precise and conservative. The opportunity for massive human casualties is lessened.
  • The flamethrower will be very visible as the operator walks around the neighborhood or toward his intended target which will cause operators to become immediately singled out as prominent targets for police envolvement.
  • Flamethrower operators are rarely taken prisoner; captured flamethrower users are summarily executed at the site of capture.
  • Finally, the flamethrower's effective range is short in comparison with that of other "human killing" weapons of similar size. To be effective, flamethrower users must approach their target, risking exposure to discovery and police intervention. ```Buster Seven Talk 14:49, 26 December 2012 (UTC)
Ah, a flamethrower..? What do they even look like..? Well, as long as I get one the right size... Thanks for the tip! darwinbish 15:49, 31 December 2012 (UTC).

Disambiguation link notification for January 7

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Misplaced Pages appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited The Real Housewives of Atlanta, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page LLC (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Editor retention effort for a sockpuppet.

User:Greatuser was a sockpuupet of User:Ali Mohammad Khilji. I wonder if it would be worth keeping track of this sort of thing, to better understand any red flags that might be detectable from a long term study of look of these sorts of things?--Amadscientist (talk) 05:13, 10 January 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for your cooperation!

Thanks very much for just going ahead and removing the attribution for the fishing advice. Under different circumstances I would have just done it and tried to avoid making it a point for discussion. However since I didn't know how the list of advice came about I thought maybe there was a discussion I had missed, and I didn't want to ruffle any feathers. I appreciate your cooperation! isaacl (talk) 14:47, 11 January 2013 (UTC)

@ Editor:Isaac.. What would you think if we started an archive at the Editor of the Week talk pages. Much of the decision process is over and any "pin feathers" can be quickly decided upon by you or me or User: GoPhil. Since Ive never set up an archive, I would like to try this one in order to learn the process. What do you think. I'm sure it will be OK with the other four "EoW Clerks". ```Buster Seven Talk 15:10, 11 January 2013 (UTC)

Sure, go for it! User:ClueBot III#How to archive your page has copy-and-paste examples of setting up archiving; you can select the "What links here" link to see live examples (for example, Talk:Toronto). You can also have a look at Help:Archiving a talk page. isaacl (talk) 15:28, 11 January 2013 (UTC)
I used Talk:Toroto and did a cutnpaste. It worked well but I'm sure the perameters are wrong. Can you adjust and I'll watch over your shoulder to see what changes you make. ```Buster Seven Talk 15:46, 11 January 2013 (UTC)
I've never set up archiving either (though I looked into it in anticipation of having to do it on my talk page at some point), but can tell you what the parameters mean:
  • The archiveprefix parameter plus the format parameter results in the archive pages being named Talk:WikiProject Editor Retention/Editor of the Week/Archive 1, Talk:WikiProject Editor Retention/Editor of the Week/Archive 2, and so forth.
  • age is the number of hours a thread must be idle before being eligible for archiving, so 1440 hours = 60 days
  • minarchthread is the minimum number of threads the bot will archive, so in this case, there must be at least 10 threads to archive before the bot will go ahead
  • maxarchivesize is the maximum size of an archive page in bytes; once the archive page reaches this size, the bot will create a new archive page
  • archivebox=yes I believe causes the message box with a search box to be displayed, and index=yes causes a list of the archive pages to be included
  • box-advert=yes I'm guessing causes the image of a box to be displayed in the message box
  • numberstart specifies a number to start the archive page number. I removed this parameter; as the default is 1, it's not required when archiving is just being started on the page. If the page already had some other method of archiving (manual or through another bot), and you wanted to pick up the archive page numbering where the other method left off, you would use this parameter.
Hope that helps! isaacl (talk) 16:30, 11 January 2013 (UTC)
...and I just realized the archiveprefix parameter should use the Misplaced Pages talk namespace—I've made the correction. isaacl (talk) 18:11, 11 January 2013 (UTC)

Help Project newsletter : Issue 5

The Help Project Newsletter
Issue V - January 2013
Project news summary
From the editor

Hello again from the Help Project!

In the last newsletter (which was quite a while ago sorry!) I talked about my fellowship and the plans for improving the main portal page, Help:Contents. Well I'm sad to say that my fellowship is now over, but very happy to say that the proposed improvements to that page have been completed and implemented. Do check it out if you haven't already.

Another important and frequently used help page, Misplaced Pages:Contact us, has also seen a significant revamp. You may recognise the design inspiration from the new tutorial pages.

In project news, we now have a subscription to the "article alerts" service. Any deletion nominations, move discussions, or requests for comments on pages within the Help Project's scope will now show up at Misplaced Pages:Help Project/Article alerts. So that's definitely a page which project members might want to watch.

Any comments or suggestions for future issues are welcome at Misplaced Pages:Help Project/Newsletter. If you don't wish to receive this newsletter on your talk page in future then just edit the participants page and add "no newsletter" next to your name.

Editor of the Week

Hey, Buster...when you nominate someone, don't forget to enter their name on the talk page, too. This whole method seems somewhat disorganized. Welcome trolls

One minute after seeing the work of Special:Contributions/TrollingTroller61 you welcomed him to Misplaced Pages. Why bother with someone like this, obviously here to troll? Binksternet (talk) 14:36, 24 January 2013 (UTC)

"Random" seems counterproductive.
I'd like to point out YoVinny who I see as an example of a fairly quiet but determined editor who has something useful to offer the encyclopedia, but nobody welcomed him. What do YoVinny and TrollingTroller61 tell us about how to apply welcome templates in the future? How do we make sure to welcome YoVinny and give him his asked-for help? How do we let trolls know their contributions are not helpful? Binksternet (talk) 14:44, 24 January 2013 (UTC)
I have left the TRoller a message. I have welcomed perhaps 3000 editors. I scan recent changes and welcome a red talk that has passed beyond "creator log". I like the system I have created for myself. Yoe should try random sometimes...you never know where it will lead. Your critisism is not appreciated. ```Buster Seven Talk 14:55, 24 January 2013 (UTC)
Also...I just this morning reported a new editor to Misplaced Pages:Usernames for administrator attention. I DO pay attention to what I am doing...but again, I'm not perfect. God is perfect. I'll settle for excellent. ```Buster Seven Talk 15:02, 24 January 2013 (UTC)
I'm sorry you do not like my criticism, but it is valid. If we welcome contributors without regard to their value then the system of welcoming is a joke. Boasting about spraying 3000 welcomes onto user talk pages makes me think of the difference between the reproductive strategy of an insect versus a lion. The lion raises one or two youngsters with an emphasis on excellence. Binksternet (talk) 15:05, 24 January 2013 (UTC)

This excellent insect bows to your greatness. I will strive to improve. Please forgive me. `Buster Seven Talk 15:13, 24 January 2013 (UTC)

Well, I'm not going to stop you from doing what you love, even if I don't love it. Enjoy your work! Binksternet (talk) 19:40, 24 January 2013 (UTC)
Thank You, Your Excellency! ```Buster Seven Talk 14:16, 25 January 2013 (UTC)

I am just a volunteer at the customs gate handing out Rules of the Road pamphlete. I might watch some as they drive off... to see how they are doing (speed, staying in their lane, texting while driving, etc). But ...I dont look in their eyes to see their intent...even if the name on their passport is a hint as to their purpose. Some other volunteer, down the road, has taken on that job. ```Buster Seven Talk 16:00, 29 January 2013 (UTC)

Progress on WP:Snuggle and work log

I've been making some progress on Snuggle development recently and I could use your feedback. Specifically, I've created a work log that I plan to update every time I get a chance to work on Snuggle. My intention is that you'll be able to watch that page to track my progress so I can get your feedback on features when they are early in development. The most recent entry (also the only entry) discusses new functionality for interacting with newcomers via Snuggle. I posted some mockups in the work log that show how I imagine the new features to work and I could use some feedback before I start writing the code. Thanks! --EpochFail 20:29, 27 January 2013 (UTC)

Dialect

East-Flemish comprises a non-standardized, heterogenous group of Low Franconian dialects. These are mainly spoken in the Belgian province of East Flanders, as well as in the south and east of Zeelandic Flanders, the southeast of West Flanders, Zwijndrecht and possibly some hamlets in the north of Hainaut.

Ducks deserve more protection than kids

Why do gun advocates think ducks deserve more protection than our children do? That's what some people are saying. We've had a gun magazine capacity limit in place for decades for duck hunters of three rounds. Any more and you lose your right to hunt ducks, pay a heafty fine, and could even go to jail. You are also reqired by law to use less lethal, but still effective, steel shot. To protect our citizens however, including our children, the gun advocates say ten rounds is too restrictive. The fact is that what was uniformly accepted to protect migratory birds is a bridge to far when it comes to protecting people. The time to coddle the gun advocates has passed. They can escape reality in their own homes and on subjects that do not endanger the rest of the nation, but on this topic the time to act is now. People ARE more important than waterfowl, and I'm tired of hearing that one person's right to play Army with their drinking buddies trumps another's right to life. They are endangering society for absolutely no reason. ```Buster Seven Talk 15:29, 31 January 2013 (UTC)
