Wikimedia Stories Project

Hello!

My name is Victor and I work with the Wikimedia Foundation, the non-profit organization that supports Misplaced Pages. We're chronicling the inspiring stories from the Misplaced Pages community around the world, including those from readers, editors, and donors. Stories are absolutely essential for any non-profit to persuade new people to support the cause, and we know the vast network of people who use Misplaced Pages have so much to share. It's important to convey the incredible diversity of people who've come to rely upon Misplaced Pages every day.

I'd really like the opportunity to interview you to tell your story, with the possibility of using it in our materials, on our community websites, or as part of this year’s fundraiser to encourage others to support Misplaced Pages.

I will be in São Paolo from the 1st - 2nd of March 2012, and I'll be attending:

http://pt.wikipedia.org/Wikip%C3%A9dia:Encontros/WikiSampa/WikiSampa_12

I'm hoping you will elaborate on your story with me. I apologize for any mis-translation in this message (perhaps it might inspire a laugh?) I am using Google-translate at the moment, but plan to have translators available when we are in Brazil.

Please let me know if you're inclined to take part in the Misplaced Pages Stories Project!

Thank you,

Victor Grigas

Thanks for the invite. Sorry I couldn't take part in the project. Fvasconcellos (t·c) 14:40, 18 April 2012 (UTC)

Hello there

I hope your real-life work is going well. I'm leaving you a note here in reference to your block, last year, of User:Thegoodson. At the time, you noted a suspicion of socking, and you were correct--I just blocked a couple today. Please see Misplaced Pages:Sockpuppet investigations/VeronicaPR, if you're interested. All the best to you! (PS--I just learned that Vaconcelos is a noble surname, and there's lots of notables with that name; I only knew of one, Nana.) Drmies (talk) 21:32, 16 March 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for letting me know. I haven't been very active, but I see the investigation was fruitful. (S)He'll probably be back, though.
Vasconcellos is indeed a noble surname, dating back to the 13th century. Sadly, I am not related to the great percussionist :) Fvasconcellos (t·c) 14:39, 18 April 2012 (UTC)

Howdy stranger!!

Goodness, how nice it is to see your name pop on my watchlist !!! Hope all is well, best, SandyGeorgia (Talk) 14:42, 18 April 2012 (UTC)

Life's been gettin' the better of me :) All is well, though. I should have some spare time for editing soon. I bet I have some serious catching up to do—give me an update! Fvasconcellos (t·c) 14:47, 18 April 2012 (UTC)
And a hearty hello again from me! --ἀνυπόδητος (talk) 15:16, 18 April 2012 (UTC)
Hello, hello! How are things at WP:PHARM? Fvasconcellos (t·c) 00:38, 26 April 2012 (UTC)
Hi Fv! WP:PHARM is much too quiet, and there are still way too many stubs on drugs and drug classes. There's consensus to merge chem- and drugbox, but no one managed to actually implement this. {{Chembox Drug}} is an attempt that somehow got stuck. Many of the lesser known and not-yet-marketed drugs have chemboxes, and chembox is missing a number of fields; but manually switching to a drugbox is tedious work and also breaks chem/drugbox validation by CheMoBot.
A few new fields have been added to the drugbox, eg. tradename and a number of, well, numbers. A proposal of adding mechanisms to the box is stuck because many drugs have more than one mechanism, and this makes things complicated. Also, there's the newish {{Drugclassbox}} which has been added to a couple of pages, but many are still missing it.
In other words: everything is going as fine as can be expected. --ἀνυπόδητος (talk) 10:45, 26 April 2012 (UTC)
Update ... well, business as usual in here, mostly craziness. I resigned as FAC delegate after some serious nastiness, and so I could devote more time to medical articles. There's some stuff going on in the Portuguese/Brazil realm that is unpleasant, likely to end in an RFC or with the arbs, so you don't want to know about that. I do hope you're well! Best, SandyGeorgia (Talk) 15:22, 18 April 2012 (UTC)

Wiki Medicine

Hi

I'm contacting you because, as a participant at Wikiproject Medicine, you may be interested in a new multinational non-profit organization we're forming at m:Wikimedia Medicine. Even if you don't want to be actively involved, any ideas you may have about our structure and aims would be very welcome on the project's talk page.

Our purpose is to help improve the range and quality of free online medical content, and we'll be working with like-minded organizations, such as the World Health Organization, professional and scholarly societies, medical schools, governments and NGOs - including Translators Without Borders.

Hope to see you there! --Anthonyhcole (talk) 07:58, 1 November 2012 (UTC)

Happy New Year!

Best wishes for the New Year!
Wishing you and yours a joyous, healthful, and productive 2013!

Please accept a belated thank you for the well wishes upon my retirement as FAC delegate this year, and apologies for the false alarm of my first—and hopefully last—retirement; the well wishes extended me were most kind, but I decided to return, re-committed, when another blocked sock was revealed as one of the factors aggravating the FA pages this year.

Maintaining standards in featured content requires vigilance, dedication and knowledge of people like you, who are needed; we miss you in here! Somehow, somehow we never ever seem to do nothin' completely nice and easy, but here's hoping that 2013 will see a peaceful road ahead and a return to the quality and comaraderie that defines the FA process, with the help of many dedicated Wikipedians!

SandyGeorgia (Talk) 20:51, 3 January 2013 (UTC)

Whoa, whoa, back it up. What did I miss? :( Jesus, it's been a while. Fvasconcellos (t·c) 15:26, 7 January 2013 (UTC)
Oh my, how very good it is to see you in here again ! What did you miss? Well, don't know when was the last time you were in here ... so ... I resigned as FAC delegate in Jan 2012 so I could spend more time editing medical articles as I long ago promised Colin I would, then the Education Program made editing medical articles miserable (ill-prepared student editing hitting my watchlist); all the while, FAC was under assault by socks and a returning user breaching CLEANSTART to revisit old grudges so editing there was no fun either, I took most of the spring, summer and fall of 2012 off to relandscape my property and because Wiki was a miserable place to be because of a corp of editors supporting the socks with the arbs and admins doing nothing about it, I came back once winter set in and found Misplaced Pages far worse than ever (abuse is rampant, socking is the norm, most good reviewers were chased out of FAC after the disruption led by socks for almost a year), after seeing several really bad blocks of good editors, I decided it was worthless and resigned in disgust, then after I resigned another Mattisse sock (she had been stirring the pot again) was blocked, so I was re-invigorated and came back. Embarrassing that business of resigning and then coming back ! So, that's a year from over here ... I hope things are going well for you, and it would be such a joy to have you back in here editing again! Best, SandyGeorgia (Talk) 18:01, 7 January 2013 (UTC)
Yikes. I'd love to come back, even if on a "part-time" basis—I've really missed editing and content work. Still not sure how I feel about the current environment, though. Your tale of woe certainly doesn't sound too encouraging :-) Fvasconcellos (t·c) 21:52, 23 January 2013 (UTC)
But it would be so much more fun in here if the nice folks like you came back! SandyGeorgia (Talk) 03:49, 24 January 2013 (UTC)

Elgar cello concerto

Excellent additions to the discography. One starts these articles off and then sometimes neglects to keep them up to date. Your additions are exactly what the article needed - warmest thanks. Tim riley (talk) 19:16, 26 January 2013 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (File:French Kicks-Young Lawyer.jpg)

Thanks for uploading File:French Kicks-Young Lawyer.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Misplaced Pages under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Misplaced Pages. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Misplaced Pages (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Misplaced Pages page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Hazard-Bot (talk) 04:00, 7 February 2013 (UTC)

Francois Hollande

Hi, I think you made a mistake, but about last contributions, they were made by my brother, i just wanted to put a new web site address about Francois Hollande,

Friendly yours — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.198.231.55 (talk) 02:23, 12 February 2013 (UTC)

Hi there. We have fairly strict guidelines about which external links are suitable for articles and which should be avoided, particularly in pages about living people. The link you added was not appropriate for the François Hollande article. Best wishes, Fvasconcellos (t·c) 02:27, 12 February 2013 (UTC)

But many french people recommanded me this web site in order to better know F. Hollande and I thought it was appropriate — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.198.231.55 (talk) 02:33, 12 February 2013 (UTC)

I've just called my french stepbrother, he told me it was appropriate, who must I trust? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.198.231.55 (talk) 02:38, 12 February 2013 (UTC)

Please read our guideline about biographies of living persons, especially the section about external links. I see you are in France, so I presume you speak French and can understand the content? This is clearly a partisan website and is not at all appropriate for inclusion in the article. And please do not continue to add the link, or you will be blocked for disruptive editing. We take biographical articles very seriously in Misplaced Pages. Fvasconcellos (t·c) 02:42, 12 February 2013 (UTC)

In case you didn't know, we can easily find the location of IP addresses. And "my stepbrother said it's OK" is not a valid reason. Read the guideline and consider this your final warning. If you add the link again, you will be blocked. Fvasconcellos (t·c) 12:26, 13 February 2013 (UTC)

Hey ho, I'm back again, how are you, didn't I miss you, I wanted to tell you I will continue to try to destroy WP. If you want, you may join me to help me in my mission. Friendly--86.198.231.55 (talk) 18:06, 17 February 2013 (UTC)

Hi Fv, nice to see you back again and battling IPs! Hope this still leaves you time for some real edits, and hope you are generally well, on-Wiki and off-Wiki! Cheers, ἀνυπόδητος (talk) 21:21, 17 February 2013 (UTC)

Yes, trying to ease back into the scheme of things... I've been working on Misplaced Pages:Requested articles/Applied arts and sciences/Pharmacology. Hopefully I'll have time for some heavier content editing soon :) Fvasconcellos (t·c) 23:56, 17 February 2013 (UTC)
That's a noble goal! I'm not very active here at the moment, but I try to keep track of my watchlist and add a few ATC codes or ChemSpider ids now and then. --ἀνυπόδητος (talk) 18:02, 20 February 2013 (UTC)

Disambiguation link notification for February 24

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Misplaced Pages appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Trastuzumab emtansine, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Generic name (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Kamal Haasan protection

Hi, the protection doesn't seem to have any effect, no talkpage activity at all. I fear, they will fight each other again, when the protection gets lifted. What to do in this case?-- Dravidian  Hero  22:10, 24 February 2013 (UTC)

Protection as a means of "forcing" users to talk things through rarely works in my opinion. Consider filing a report at the edit warring noticeboard if appropriate, or have a look at this page for suggestions as to the best course of action. Best, Fvasconcellos (t·c) 22:15, 24 February 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for your suggestions. Please unprotect the site. I will send them a warning regarding a block due to edit warring and press for talkpage participation.-- Dravidian  Hero  22:26, 24 February 2013 (UTC)

2601:A:4100:5A:* addresses

Hello. These are not accounts, but instead IPv6 addresses, so they shouldn't be indeffed. However, what does seem in order here is a temporary rangeblock of 2601:A:4100:5A::/64, given that this is likely just one user anyways.--Jasper Deng (talk) 00:24, 25 February 2013 (UTC)

Ah, yes. I am wary of rangeblocking IPv6 addresses due to the potential for massive collateral damage, but I agree that indef blocks were probably not the best course of action either. I've asked an admin with more experience in this area to weigh in. Fvasconcellos (t·c) 00:45, 25 February 2013 (UTC)
A /64 has very low chance of collateral, especially for IP hoppers, because a /64 typically represents one user, as is the case here (a Comcast range). My guide explains a lot of best practices.--Jasper Deng (talk) 00:54, 25 February 2013 (UTC)
There's some minor collateral on the /64 range. But it's not major collateral. Elockid 01:58, 25 February 2013 (UTC)
