Macedonism is the official political ideology in Republic of Macedonia, generally claiming non-Bulgarian origin of the people in the Republic of Macedonia and non-Bulgarian origin of the Macedonian language. The following are the major clams of the Macedonism supporters:
- The inhabitants of the contemporary region of Macedonia constitute a separate ethnic group (independent of their self-determination).
- The inhabitants of the Republic of Macedonia are the descendents of the people of Ancient Macedon
- There existed a distinct Macedonian national consciousness in the Middle Ages, culminating with the rule of Tsar Samuil and his Macedonian kingdom.
