hi. I think about a year ago you edited the above article and added a picture of the ship with the caption that it was rigged as a barque. From memory, I think this image is one of a series which I recall the book said were drawn by a member of the crew, showing the ship dismasted in a storm. Looking at the picture I think it shows chopped off masts and yards from the top masts still hanging, not a barque rig. I wondered whether you had some source for your caption? A little too bold
Djembayz, can you please quit adding Native American language names to places that do not have a historic Native American name? It is one thing if a geographic feature like mountain range or river has a historic name, but Montana communities such as Helena, Miles City and Fort Benton (just to name a few) were never settlements prior to the arrival of white settlers; it would be different if a town had been built on a village site, but these were not. Furthermore, the Assiniboine people were not necessarily the people who even claimed these territories anyway (the Blackfeet tended to be more active in North Central Montana, for example.) Please don't do this without a reliable source giving a proper historic name, just because a word is in a dictionary doesn't mean it actually has a historic context. - Feel free to move these terms further down into the body of the articles if you wish! I'm pretty much finished up, that's about all I'm finding online. The idea here was to add the terms to help jumpstart the efforts at Incubator. Couldn't write stub articles that fast, so just linked the geographic terms in quickly while the websites are still available (and while I have the time). I'm skeptical about some of the historical materials, especially those written by people who didn't know the language. I want to broaden our scope to include reference sources in modern spellings, that will be understood by living speakers, about places they discuss today.

- PS Now that I've been able to look, I see I needed to put in better links so that you don't need to enter a search term in the box to pull up the definition. Don't see why a dictionary constitutes WP:OR. Don't see why anyone would dispute the American Indian Studies Research Institute at the University of Indiana as a reliable source. My understanding of the Native American Languages Act of 1990 is that Native Americans are permitted by law to continue developing their languages, and are not geographically restricted in using these languages to carry out their business. Also please note that WikiProject Countering systemic bias "concentrates upon remedying omissions (entire topics, or particular sub-topics in extant articles)," which, to my mind, could include minority languages and terminology. - Well, in Montana, if native languages are needed for naming modern place names, then you'd need to add, at a minimum, the terms used by ALL the recognized tribes in Montana, which begins to get ridiculous, and you'd also need to do so in their alphabets, (Blakfeet and Salish have their own characters), and as I mentioned, the Assiniboine people didn't even spend much time in the areas you tagged that I noted, these were traditional territories of other tribes, so if you want to add Salish, Blackeet, Crow, Chippewa, Cree, Gros Ventre, Lakota Sioux, Kootenai, and Cheyenne names too, well, I hope you see my point. I also reverted your addition of a Tolowa name for Manzanita, Oregon as a bit too bold. Manzanita is north of the Tolowa range; Tillamook or Nehalem were spoken in this area. I suspect your translation refers to manzanita the coastal shrub, for which the town of Manzanita was named when it was platted in 1912. Cataobh (talk) 19:06, 5 June 2012 (UTC)

Alibamu name
BHi, Djembayz! I notice you added the Alibamu name to the Houston article. It's interesting, but I'm not sure if that's putting undue weight on the name itself. I don't think it's very important enough for the main article (it could go under a "names of Houston" or something like that)
The issue is that Houston has no significant Alibamu population, in the area or around it. You probably noticed the Arizona and New Mexico cities with Native American names. In those cases, significant Native American populations exist, and large Native American reservations dot the areas. In southeast Texas many of the Native Americans are extinct, or fully assimilated. There is the Alabama-Coushatta reservation between Livingston and Woodville. Native American names involving the Reservation and/or a few communities nearby would be highly relevant. As far as adding more local place names goes, quite a few names in Native American dictionaries are only identifiable for local residents, on the order of "that big red hill 5 miles south of town on the interstate ... " Was hoping to find someone like you with more local knowledge to assist. Here's the Alabama Dictionary link-- can you identify anything here?
- I like your idea of having a section for Native American place names. In the course of working on Native American languages in Incubator, I've been discovering that the language revitalization movement is at a very interesting and important stage, with lots of experimentation on how to use the Internet. After seeing so many references to US cities in foreign languages, and made-up languages like Volapük, it just seems dumb that we wouldn't include Native American names right now when the interest is increasing. People do move around, both historically due to displacement, and currently, due to cars and improved transportation, and I'd like to find a way to include the names of North American places in all North American languages. Have yet to find any language other than English with its own geographic names for the entire US; the available names tend to be regional, plus a few surprising places "out of area," which give you an idea which places people have a reason to talk about.
- Do you know of an existing model for place names in Native languages? Better as a section or in the infobox? One advantage to putting them in the infobox would be that it would work better with the Wikidata ... guess I'll need to run this by the WikiData folks when they come to town. Coordinator sought for the US National Archives WikiProject

US Navy ships
Before Misplaced Pages, I did the research and the writing on several US Navy warships for our local military museum. DANFS and Misplaced Pages became my primary sources of reference, because so little other information was available. What I found then (and now as a WikiProject Ships participant) was the Misplaced Pages articles were actually DANFS articles that had been cut and pasted. In a reverse kind of way, it makes DANFS the original Misplaced Pages contributor and often the article’s primary reference source. As you know, DANFS articles are similar: lots of jargon, untypical in style, and speak to places more often than events. Yet, as I see it, DANFS is a comprehensive and accurate source, and in many (perhaps most) cases maybe the only reference source. To me, DANFS articles are unique and should be treated that way, but they do present special editing problems-at least for me. • Books are not written on every Navy ship, which scuttles in line citations. • DANFS might be the only reference source available: is that enough weight to make the article creditable in the eyes of a critic? • Each time I step up to the plate, I hope to make the article a little clearer, and a bit more concise, yet keeping the contributor in mind. • So if the standard of acceptable readability is met, to what extent should this atypical style of DANFS be dealt with – jargon, style, and places vs. events? Thanks for looking this over. I've been adding Native American / First Nations placenames and terms of potential interest in a wide range of articles for the use of other editors. It's interesting to approach ethnobotany from the perspective of terminology available in current dictionaries of Native American / First Nations languages, and help from folks like you with more botanical knowledge of scientific names is important. My new project - WWC
Hi Djembayz! I hope all is well. I wanted to stop by to share a new project with you that I am developing, called the WikiWomen's Collaborative. I would love your input about the project.
- You can find the project page here.
- On the talk page, you'll find a number of questions I'm seeking input on. I'm especially seeking thoughts about hosting the space off of Misplaced Pages (in the WordPress section). I hope you will join in on the conversation.
- Finally, this project will be developed with volunteers from around the world who want to engage and support bringing new women to Misplaced Pages. Chukchansi language - DYK review
Djembayz, As you know, I'm reviewing your article (which is fascinating) - and just had one question. Under all your numbered references there is an unnumbered reference for the Kroeber book. Is that supposed to be one of the numbered references -- or perhaps a footnote as opposed to a reference (in which case, would it need a footnote heading, similar to the references heading?) Once I know if that Kroeber line is a mistake (and should be incorporated into the other references) or is correctly there for a wikipedia reason with which I'm unfamiliar, I'll go ahead and ok the article. - Djembayz, now that the nomination process for the DYK is over, I'm still a fan of your article, and want to make a suggestion for you as you continue to expand the article. I think that if you added one sentence to the first paragraph about the fact that there are efforts to preserve the language and expand the number of speakers, that paragraph could then become the lead, separated from the rest of the article. Then perhaps there could be a section about the language itself, starting with the sentence about no "r" sound, and perhaps adding more information about it and the larger language group within which it exists. Then there could be a section about studying and preserving the language, including the effort to increase the number of speakers. Backstage at the Smithsonian Libraries
Backstage at the Smithsonian Libraries is part of Misplaced Pages Loves Libraries 2012, the second annual continent-wide campaign to bring Misplaced Pages and libraries together with on-site events. Running this fall through October and November, libraries (and archives) will open their doors to help build a lasting relationship with their local Wikipedian community.
Organized by Wikimedia DC, this event will take place on October 12, 2012, and will include new editor training, a "backstage pass" tour of the National Museum of Natural History, and an edit-a-thon. Everyone is welcome to attend!

So uh, I haven't been doing the best jorb ever, but I have been staring at the language page with good intent and asking questions to the wind on the talk page for it. I've definitely edited more since Wikimania, I think. At least I'm not scared of signing in any more.
Today I felt reckless after having a good morning, so I noticed that a Native page was missing. It's a woman musician, but scarily I can probably get more reliable references for her than some of the assertions I want to make about the language. Culture is close enough when I notice it's missing, right? :D
Anyway, my practice page is here. I know it's still very stubby, but I want it in here eventually.

Oh, now you're really all in trouble. I found the hardcover copy of my dictionary. That is the one that I have been adding words to over the years, because one person will remember a word, another person will remember a synonym, a third person will have another piece... >:) I try and go back later and cross populate my leather tied Speck on paper with the hardcover one, but I'm not always diligent. Now I have 3 places with Misplaced Pages being the easiest to replicate storage vessel. I can always copy my new olde stuff onto my userpage so that no one reverts it >:) I work so much slower than you! Re: Mohawk language Misplaced Pages is at Incubator
Sorry for the much long delayed response. That dictionary, to my knowledge, is the most recent dictionary of the Mohawk language to be published. It's based on the Western dialect as it's spoken here in Tyendinaga. It was written in 1990, though, and a standardized orthography for Mohawk wasn't developed until 1993. It's one of the few texts on Mohawk to note its tone system though. Another good one is 1000 Mohawk Words, I forget the offer but it's in the Canadian Museum of Civilization's mercury series. In both those texts you will notice slight discrepencies between the standardized orthography and the orthography used, but they are similar enough that you can easily write them over into standardized orthography if you wish.
I will check out the Mohawk incubator project. My Mohawk is introductory at best, though. Oosting (talk) 19:45, 20 October 2012 (UTC)

I dont see why it should not be in wikipedia. It tells how Spain was form by the 6 kingdoms in their flag. And how the Kings fougth to keep their crown. In the zambrana heraldic records it shows princess and murder. And even local legends like Jaun Zuria. And a great records of arms.

Wiki Workshops in Baltimore
Hi Djembayz, I thought you and your friends might be interested to know that we have two Misplaced Pages workshops coming up in Baltimore. I expect them to be pretty low-key. Also they're only three hours apiece. (Progress on a real 'edit-a-thon' at the Enoch Pratt Free Library is slow.) All are welcome! This is no doubt a useful resource regarding the subject at hand, i.e. traditional canoe building, but I believe that inline references are meant to back up specific content in the article. WP:cite says "Citations are an important part of any Misplaced Pages article, serving to identify the reliable sources on which the article is based". So it seems like link shouldn't be there (maybe more of an external link type thing)? Wikimedia DC Holiday Party and Wiki Loves Monuments Exhibition
Please join Wikimedia DC and four other local media nonprofits—the National Press Club's Young Members Committee, 100Reporters, IRE and the Fund for Investigative Journalism—in winding down another year with a night of well-mannered frivolity.
The festivities will take place on Friday evening from 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM in the Zenger Room on the 13th Floor of the National Press Club, located on 529 14th Street NW, near Metro Center. There will be meat and vegetarian appetizers as well as a cash bar with specially reduced drink prices all night long. In addition, we will be exhibiting the finalists of the Wiki Loves Monuments photo contest at the event.

Miszoo meetup
Hi, noticed your page for a Missoula meetup, I'm not in Missoula so not apt to be able to attend, but curious what you have planned; I don't know of many/any other editors in Missoula, so will you be training a herd of newbies? Any ideas of the direction you want to take? I ask for two reasons: one, if it goes, maybe I can try it in my community too, but also, a self-preservation plea that be careful with turning newbies loose because it's NOT fun to have to go into a whole bunch of articles that went from marginal to longer but more marginal. For example, the last time we had a newbie-thon hit one Montana article, we had removal of refs, replaced with a term paper with bad refs and no wiki markup. I did a fast fix to this, then Mike Cline went to work on it and it now looks like this. So while in the long run, the article was improved, it created a short-term crisis management mode on the part of more experienced editors. So I hope that when people go in to "improve" articles, they also learn a few basics, like use of simple ref tags and wikilinks. But good luck, and hugs to you for giving this a shot! Thanks so much for mentioning the Little Cree Books project on the Cree language Misplaced Pages page! What a surprise! I learned about it when I checked my site stats and saw that people were being directed there via Misplaced Pages, and I wanted to find out what entry was directing them. (I'm the person who initiated the project.) I'd like to update the Misplaced Pages entry to make that information a little more concise, but I know Misplaced Pages frowns on companies/organizations/individuals writing about themselves. Thank you for adding the information about the Yurok language program to the Eureka, California page. You'll notice I went in after you and changed your citation format to match the other citations. It is preferred to use Day Month Year format and also citations in the long form, especially to match the citation format of a long established article of this type. For this newspaper citation it would appear thus:

Naval History
Aye there, 'Djembayz', I'm a member of WikiProject Ships. To help naval historians here at Misplaced Pages in the effort of writing and citing naval history articles sometime ago I created the List of ships captured in the 19th century and Bibliography of early American naval history pages. Over the last year(+) I have been tracking down and including names of captured ships and naval history texts for inclusion in either of these articles. I like to think that I have included most captured ships (19th century) and most naval history texts (1700s-1800s) for inclusion in these articles, so if you know of any captured ships or naval history texts that are not included would you kindly include them, either on the page or the talk page of the appropriate article?
