Sarnia article
Hi, Moxy,
You gave me my Barnstar for getting Sarnia to GA status. I've tinkered with it off and on for the last six months and wanted to get your opinion about whether or not it is of FA quality. I looked at Hamilton, which is FA, and thought Sarnia was at least its equal. Let me know what you think. There can be only one...TheKurgan (talk) 15:24, 19 February 2013 (UTC)
- Hey, Moxy. Want to help me get Sarnia to FA status? I just nominated it, got about fifty suggestions for correction, which I just completed, and was wondering if you'd like to help me. I know I asked this in February, but I got no response; therefore, I am asking again. If you cannot do it, I understand. Let me know. There can be only one...TheKurgan (talk) 21:16, 22 June 2013 (UTC)

Hi,
I have seen your {{undue}} banner at the top of the Controversy section. How should we fix this problem to your satisfaction? By adding material, removing some, by trimming both Oppose and Support sub-sections. I'd be happy to discuss it on the talk page. Regards. Bouchecl (talk) 06:28, 22 February 2013 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Misplaced Pages appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page NOVA (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Does this 1910 census extract from April 1910 giving young Lucille's age as 5 count as a valid source? Cassin (misspelled as Casson) was her stepfather's surname. I will refrain from editing that article within the next 48 hours unless someone else suggests I should edit. However when the 48 hours is up if the only people who reply are you and me, than we are responsible for the article and therefore need to make the changes with the new datta. If no one responds on the talk page, within 48 hours Iwill change the article, cause that's the right thing to do. If you want to help me change it fine. IN other words I need a consensu within 48 hours, hopefully it involves more than 2 people but we cant rely on that Nottruelosa (talk) 02:50, 5 March 2013 (UTC)

Its not a threat all I am saying is that if no one else helps us out within 48 hours we need to be creative and come up with a solution ourselves Nottruelosa (talk) 03:01, 5 March 2013 (UTC). Assistance with Moagim
Hi Moxy, About - User:Moagim contributions
I see you've had some discussions with Moagim about unilateral editing decisions and I'm wondering if you could look at his recent actions on a number of War of 1812-related entries. He's citing WP:NOR to remove the word "Decisive" from various entries' outcomes (entries where the presence or absence of the word has been long settled) and is also going back and adding cites to justify the remaining "American victory" or "British victory". TIA Natty10000 | Natter 18:50, 8 March 2013 (UTC)
- User:Rjensen would be the best guy to ask about the War of 1812 edits (I have informed him of this talk). I am more concerned with hes copy and pasting - like this - Moxy (talk) 18:59, 8 March 2013 (UTC)

Thanks -- awesome
I agree, you are an awesome Wikipedian, and you understand how to deal with things so they get done rather than get talked about. I don't mean just the WikiProject suggestion, either. Yes, the film could have just been moved at any time, and allowing other editors to weigh in, even if it does seem clearly notable, is being part of the community, so waiting was reasonable.
Thanks! -68.99.89.234 (talk) 06:01, 10 March 2013 (UTC)

Reason I want File:Bfs lp corr.JPG image deleted
FYI, because of an editing dispute regarding articles related to The Beatles, I have publicly quit editing Beatle related articles. For that reason, I am also trying to delete images I contributed to Beatle related artiles. Because I have publicly quit editing Beatle related articles, it is not right to go back to those articles and delete images so that is why I am deleting the fair use rationales from the image pages to hasten the deletion of the images from Misplaced Pages. Steelbeard1 (talk) 13:25, 15 March 2013 (UTC)
- BUT - the way you have done it has not changed anything. The image will still be used in the same manner. So what you can do is remove it from all affiliated articles (orphan it) then simply place {{orfud}} on it - see Misplaced Pages:Criteria for speedy deletion#Files F5. Orphaned non-free use images.Moxy (talk) 16:59, 16 March 2013 (UTC)
Re:Minority official languages
Greetings Monxy. First of all, thank you for your advice. As for debate, I am aware of all problems second editor speaks. However, I do not think we need to create a collective prejudices-if I'm a bad person, it's because I'm a bad person, not because I am from specific region. But I do not give it too much importance :) . I'll try to sort it out with other involved editors (they recommend me that you maybe can have comment based on previous practice). However, I am currently traveling around Croatia and Bosnia so I do not have to much time to deal Misplaced Pages unfortunately. Once again, thank you for your advice and all the best.--MirkoS18 (talk) 22:09, 15 March 2013 (UTC)
Canadian Alaska...
I've heard both, usually babble in the news forums, but as far as actual citable things, a certain Ms Palin shot her mouth off about this when/after Obama won, and she wasn't alone; she backed down once she realized "we" were more "socialist" than he is.......it's a fringe view, not very citable other than one or two idiot politicians and if anything it's in letters to the editor. But it's not a notable "movement" at all.Skookum1 (talk) 02:11, 19 March 2013 (UTC)

Shortcut box at WP:AE
Hello Moxy. I'm asking about this edit of WP:AE. You stated you were moving the shortcuts to the header, but the net effect of our changes is that the separate box for the shortcuts has disappeared, the one created by {{shortcut}}. Since the use of a box to display shortcuts is widespread, can you consider an update that will restore the box? The current version of the noticeboard says 'WP:AE' in very small print that will easily be missed. Thanks, EdJohnston (talk) 17:02, 26 March 2013 (UTC)
- Hello my new friend - is this better? Misplaced Pages:Arbitration/Requests/Enforcement.Moxy (talk) 18:15, 26 March 2013 (UTC)
- Thank you. That does restore the shortcut box. Somehow I was used to seeing it by the upper right corner of the red box, as in this version. Perhaps that was my own quirky preference. AE does have the problem of too much 'front matter'. We should have a UI expert to advise us. EdJohnston (talk) 18:22, 26 March 2013 (UTC)
- this version sandwiches the red box on my screen. That said it could be put in that red box like at User:Moxy/Sandbox. What do you think is best?Moxy (talk) 18:29, 26 March 2013 (UTC)
- When you put it inside the red box it is highly visible. That version (User:Moxy/Sandbox) would have my vote. Thanks, EdJohnston (talk) 18:38, 26 March 2013 (UTC)

WP:WikiProject U2 and User:Miss Bono...
You seem to be the project member with the most knowledge of how wiki's work. Would you be willing to take User:Miss Bono under your wing so to speak. She seems to be a really inexperienced editor and seems very excited, and I think that is great. However, her use of all caps in section titles, canvassing her questions in multiple help services within minutes, posting to user pages (such as mine) when she doesn't get an immediate response is starting to get a little tiresome. I think that she will receive being asked to calm down and give people time to respond from a fellow project member better than a member of the help resources asking her to do so. I'm afraid it might discourage her more coming from me, and I hope to avoid that. If you have any questions, I have your talk page here on my watchlist for a bit and I'll keep an eye open for a reply. Thanks Technical 13 (talk) 19:43, 4 April 2013 (UTC)
- Would have no problem in helping her out....tell her (she will see this i hope) to come talk to me at anytime for any reason. Great to see someone so excited to be here - have not seen this in some time. I do hope we are in the same time zone its 3:45 est for me right now.Moxy (talk) 19:48, 4 April 2013 (UTC)
- Problem solved. Don't worry Technical 13, I won't pissed you again.
Miss Bono (zootalk) 20:26, 4 April 2013 (UTC)
- I don't mind you asking advice. I think I speak for most of the volunteers at the Teahouse and the Help desk when I say we're happy to help you with whatever we can, all I am personally asking is that you remember that we are helping other people as well, and sometimes it may take us quite some time to respond if we get tied up into researching a question another user has asked. I encourage your enthusiasm, and simply request you be virtuous in the amount of time you give the volunteers to respond. Thank you. Technical 13 (talk) 20:43, 4 April 2013 (UTC)

Removed selected item from Portal:Massachusetts
Hello. I appreciate your enthusiasm in adding the bombing to the selected articles for Portal:Massachusetts, however I have undone your change. That article is not a GA or FA, and moreover is highly unstable as the situation is still developing, and therefore the article is unsuitable for inclusion in a (Featured) Portal. I have little doubt that the article will make GA in a few weeks/months once all of this is over; it can be reinserted then. Sven Manguard Wha? 21:01, 19 April 2013 (UTC)

Decade portals
Hi, Moxy!
I noticed you removed the 2010s portal. I have restored the portal, and will present the following concerns.
- 1. 2010s content *is* inherently related to this subject. As you may understand people group things, events/etc by decade and have decade nostalgia (1970s/1980s/etc) - so it is important to group things by decade and link them together.
- 2. Just because it is unfinished doesn't mean it should be removed. Substantial amount content exist (purge the cache and eventually you will see several things in the "article" space, etc.) and I expect for the Misplaced Pages community to fill in the blanks. One has a right to start an incomplete article (as long as notability is proven, etc.) and expect the community to fill in the rest.
- Misplaced Pages:Portal_guidelines#What_content_to_include does say "Do not create a portal if you do not intend to assist in its regular maintenance." but I do that by finding new "featured articles" when browsing and adding them in when needed, but I expect that other Wikipedians are able to do the same. Plus, say if somebody creates a clearly viable portal subject and then disappears of the face of the planet, does it mean the person shouldn't have made the portal? I say that is not the case.
- 3. If you go on other language Wikipedias, notice that the French Misplaced Pages has their decade portals up and running well, and events, TV shows, etc. are tagged with these decades. This means the French Misplaced Pages has progressed further than the English Misplaced Pages in this matter, and we need to catch up. Having these portals, even if incomplete, linked furthers this progress. Removing them harms this progress.
- I've created other portals lately, doing a substantial amount of the work, and then saying "Hi, ABC Wikiproject! I made ABC Portal!" - That is to tell the project that they need to fill in the rest.
Thank you, WhisperToMe (talk) 22:31, 19 April 2013 (UTC)
- Would really be best to add content to the portal before its placed all over in unrelated unlinked articles - its red link heaven only 1/3 of the boxes even have info - its embarrassing to say the least. I can help you fix the disheveled portal if you like as I have created hundreds of them over the years. How many have you done like this?Moxy (talk) 23:06, 19 April 2013 (UTC)
- If you want to fix the portal content, please do. Part of the problem is that portals are supposed to highlight the "best content" but I prefer to wait until I find the "best content" and I don't want to make all of the decisions for the portal - if someone has a better article idea, I want him/her to add it. As for some of the ones I've made that are incomplete...
- Portal:Beijing
- Portal:Shanghai
- Portal:Geneva
- Portal:1970s->Portal:2010s
- Portal:Film in the United States
- Portal:Television in the United Kingdom
- Portal:Islands
- And personally I feel that if I don't start these portals, other Wikipedians won't think "we have to start these portals" - I want to encourage Wikipedians to finish them, to get the idea "make and finish these portals," to have the types of portals that the French have. If these portals aren't linked, I think they'd never get done. If they are linked and are "embarrassing" Wikipedians will be forced to finish them.
- WhisperToMe (talk) 23:12, 19 April 2013 (UTC)
- Will work on these over the next few days - dont what to see them delete for being unpopulated - we have had this problem recently. Your expecting lots of work to be done by others in these portals - portals are complicated and the average editor does not mess with them.Moxy (talk) 23:19, 19 April 2013 (UTC)
- Thank you very much. :) Is there a way to make it easier for average editors to add entries to portals? I did notice that making them is complicated, so I try to add in the portal skeletons, the Wikiprojects, the commons links, the links to other portals. Then try to add as many featured articles or good articles as possible, as I know those are the choicest ones (for American film I had to increase the number of articles in the portal to accommodate more). For Biographies I also add the choicest ones if I find any. I don't have experience with DYK so I usually leave those blank. There was one more I made recently that I added to the list, Portal:Islands. If you think I should just add any old article if I don't find good featured or good articles then I could just do that. Hi, unsure why you have deleted my addition re 420? Thought more background was important - the police code myth was very prevalent - and was explained well in edison's book. Open Help Conference The Open Help Conference will be taking place June 15-19 in Cincinnati Ohio, USA. The conference includes two days of presentations and open discussions, followed by team "sprints" - collaborative efforts to write and improve documentation. It has been suggested to send a team from Misplaced Pages/Wikimedia: to share our own knowledge about help, learn from others in the open source community working on similar problems, and to carry out a sprint to improve some aspect of Misplaced Pages's help. There may be support available for volunteers to attend from the Participation Support program (and your editor is certainly hoping to be there!) Please join the discussion in Meta's IdeaLab if you're interested, and/or have suggestions about what we could work on. |

Thanks for your comment about images on Talk:Montacute House/GA1. Can I suggest you put this on Talk:Montacute House as I don't think many people will be watching the GA review page and more people are likely to see it on the general talk page. I've never used the multiple image template and some of the other editors are likely to have comments about the images as there has previously been some discussion about image sizes etc.— Rod 10:10, 1 May 2013 (UTC)

- 'Um, this one time.... on Misplaced Pages....' (smile) Thanks, I'm not as new or inexperienced as everyone is making me out to be. They're trying to trip me up though, but I won't budge. They just need to pump the brakes. I've been editing on Misplaced Pages since 2007. Their judgments are just clouded by the fact I use an IP and historically they tend to be trouble-makers I guess. I'm standing up for all the IPs who are actually good editors perhaps... GO IPs! Hehe. Nah, but yeah, I appreciate the offer/interest! There are just some individuals intent on causing problems, but I'm ignoring them. (Which has actually made it worse, so maybe I should rethink my strategy?) I'm more concerned about how I want no contact with these editors who are clearly in violation and yet nothing is done to them. So they make up stuff I'm doing wrong that holds no water. I've actually been pissing in the wind lately on here, and I'm due for a break just to stay sane. I don't want the toxic to rub off on me. This site has been nothing but angry jealous passive-aggressive bullies recently who enjoy provoking specific editors. (My observations, of course.) Oh well, take care... P.S. No matter how many clean starts I make, there will always be humans on here starting drama. It's the way of the world! (sigh) 99.129.112.89 (talk) 00:13, 3 May 2013 (UTC)

Dear Moxy:
What is it that you wish to know about the so-called contested editing of the leading sentence of the introduction to the Political Correctness article, and the substantiating image? I say so-called, because neither Mr Dougweller, nor North8000 have bothered to reply directly to a direct question: How are the sentence and the image wrong? I ask, because these fellows have complained exclusively about those two things, and have refused to be specific and give examples of how the editorial work is incorrect; i.e. verifiability. In my experience of Misplaced Pages, such are the complaints of page-owners and gate-keepers.
Let me know, here, in the article page.
Best regards,

- The image is not related (as I motioned on the talk page). The text is not bad to me but did make a huge run-on sentence even longer. Moxy (talk) 20:26, 7 May 2013 (UTC)

Haiti and Latin America
I am quite familiar with the literature on Latina America, having a degree in Latin American studies. You pointed to one source that was cited at Hispanic and Latino Americans that refers to Haiti, but every other cited definition in that article excludes it. Including Haiti within the definition of Latin America is a distinctly minority position among scholars, academics, and even dictionaries. Here are a few sources:
- "Latin America". The New Oxford Dictionary of English. Pearsall, J., ed. 2001. Oxford, UK: Oxford University Press; p. 1040: "The parts of the American continent where Spanish or Portuguese is the main national language (i.e. Mexico and, in effect, the whole of Central and South America including many of the Caribbean islands)."
- : "Haiti is an anomalous country. Geographically, it is in the Caribbean, and by extension, the Western Hemisphere. But it is not part of Latin America, much less Anglo-Saxon America."
- Humes, Karen R.; Jones, Nicholas A.; Ramirez, Roberto R. "Overview of Race and Hispanic Origin: 2010" (PDF). U.S. Census Bureau. Retrieved 2011-03-28.
"Hispanic or Latino" refers to a person of Cuban, Mexican, Puerto Rican, South or Central American, or other Spanish or Portuguese culture or origin regardless of race.
- "American FactFinder Help: Hispanic or Latino origin". United States Census Bureau. Retrieved 2008-10-05.
For Census 2000, American Community Survey: People who identify with the terms "Hispanic" or "Latino" are those who classify themselves in one of the specific Hispanic or Latino categories listed on the Census 2000 or ACS questionnaire - "Mexican," "Puerto Rican," or "Cuban" - as well as those who indicate that they are "other Spanish, Hispanic, or Latino." Origin can be viewed as the heritage, nationality group, lineage, or country of birth of the person or the person's parents or ancestors before their arrival in the United States. People who identify their origin as Spanish, Hispanic, or Latino may be of any "race".

Changes to the Harpy Eagle article
Greetings and felicitations. I noticed that you reverted my changes to the Harpy Eagle article, which consisted of four basic items:
- Corrections to capitalization ("global warming" and "climate change" are not proper nouns))
- Alphabetization of the categories (for the sake of convenience and ease of future editing)
- Changed the size of one image (per Misplaced Pages:Image use policy#Displayed image size)
- Moved images from the side of a section to a gallery at the bottom of the same section
It seems from your comment ("rv why would you do that? pls read over WP:Galleries before moving images out of the proper place") that your objection is to the last item. I moved those images because as the article stood (and now stands again) the images and the {{clear}}
template at the bottom of the "Popular culture" section create a significant amount of white space in that section when the article is displaying in windows of approximately 1200 pixels or more. The gallery and the resizing of the last image eliminate that (IMHO unsightly) white space, while keeping the images in the appropriate sections.—DocWatson42 (talk) 08:08, 12 May 2013 (UTC)
- (talk page stalker) I agree with Moxy that the images should not have been moved into a gallery at the bottom. However, I think it should have been a partial undo and the other changes should have been kept. User:DocWatson42, I would suggest it is likely okay, and in the best interest of the article to put just those non-controversial changes back but don't move/change any images. I'm on a 1280×800 resolution laptop atm, but would be happy to check it out on one of the higher resolution university computers tomorrow. Happy editing! Technical 13 (talk) 11:21, 12 May 2013 (UTC)
- I'll wait. ^_^ I use a 1600×1200 monitor, but I want to check the article on a larger one, using a modern browser.—DocWatson42 (talk) 12:19, 12 May 2013 (UTC)
- Fixed - here - Will be honest here - did not notice the other edits ...when scrolling only when as far as the gallery/ You are correct - not all should have been reverted.Moxy (talk) 14:19, 12 May 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks. ^_^ I checked the article as it is now (though not my version of it) in Firefox 18 and Google Chrome 26 on a 1920×1080 monitor, as well as my own (under Firefox 2 <sweatdrop>), and in all three cases the last two images in the stack intrude into the "References" section, even with the last image being at the default thumbnail size. The "References" are interfered with until the browser window is c. 1100 pixels wide. I won't pretend that a gallery is the ideal solution, but IMHO it is the best available option.—DocWatson42 (talk) 23:09, 12 May 2013 (UTC)
- Ok take a look now - i added a break and moved an image that could be bigger anyways.--Moxy (talk) 00:28, 13 May 2013 (UTC)

Hi Moxy - Do you know why the images from this article were deleted? I didn't see any notice on that page before they disappeared, so I never saw the deletion rationale. As photos created before 1949 they ought to have been in the public domain in Canada. Pburka (talk) 11:35, 12 May 2013 (UTC)

Hi Moxy
I see you have dropped me a note about the images on the World War I article page. You suggested I read the 'Location' section of the 'Images' page which I did. It left me more confused than ever - i.e. "Images can be staggered left and right. However, they should avoid sandwiching text between two images that face each other". I'm not sure how many images there are in this article (at least 25); I could not see any that "faced each other". Nevertheless, my original intention was to reduce the ugly patches of white space - on my screen at least - that was displayed, the whole page was a mess. So, I tried to stagger the pics. Indeed, my edit summaries said as much about said white space.
If you know of a better solution, I would like hear of it.
Regards

GBooks
I asked a while ago about accessdates in the Gbooks tool, haven't gotten a response yet - looks like the user is mostly inactive. But one of your recent edits on my watchlist flagged another issue with the tool: use of very specific publication dates. These are great for news sources, etc, that are published daily, but usually for books you would only cite year, not the ymd (in whatever order) that the tool seems to produce. Thoughts? Nikkimaria (talk) 17:45, 21 May 2013 (UTC)
- I agree no need for full pub dates - I remove the accessdate by hand (as there useless for books in my opinion) I will now also trim down to just the year by hand (doing History of Canada next). Would be great if the date parameter had the option of just year with no months or days- and accessdate removed entirely. Perhaps User:LeadSongDog could help they just made Template:Gbook and may know more about coding then we ever will - perhaps a new tool if the old tool maker is gone.Moxy (talk) 18:18, 21 May 2013 (UTC)
- Really I just modified the existing code from Template:PMC. It wasn't a very creative effort, I'm afraid. If you're looking for someone to adopt an existing tool, you might ask at wp:VPT. LeadSongDog come howl! 01:18, 22 May 2013 (UTC)

Google Books
An embedded list is not allowed to directly contain offsite links, per WP:ELNO. Direct offsite links are absolutely never permitted in the body text of a Misplaced Pages article, and may be included only inside reference tags, in the "website" field of an infobox or in an article's external links section. There are no exceptions. WP:BOOKLINKS only speaks about the format of a link to Google Books in the context of citing references — note that it's a section of the policy document on reference formatting — and says nothing about those links being allowed in contexts, such as sitting in plain body text, where they would ordinarily be disallowed by our rules about offsite linking. Bearcat (talk) 05:20, 30 May 2013 (UTC)
- For one thing, not one word of what I said above is in anyway incompatible with the action of compiling bibliographies, so there's nothing "concerning" about it. If people want to find copies of the books for themselves, that's why we have a magical template which automatically links the books' ISBN numbers to an ISBN search site that gives the user flexibility to choose multiple sources, so the action of compiling a bibliography does not require the provision of direct links to a specific provider — or, for that matter, direct links to the books' promotional pages on their publishers' websites, which is also happening a lot on that list even though it's even more inappropriate and unacceptable than Google Books is. (I may be wrong, but I'm also pretty sure I stripped at least one link to a book's page on Amazon.com — which is also a big no-no.)
- And anyway, you might perhaps have noticed that Google Books mostly provides partial book previews with big chunks of the book withheld, such that even a Google Books link isn't necessarily solving anything for a reader who may still have to track down another copy to actually find what they're looking for? Can you see how maybe that makes the links less useful in actual practice than they might seem to be in theory? Bearcat (talk) 05:43, 30 May 2013 (UTC)
- I fail to see how this in any way constitutes a violation of "the sprite of why Misplaced Pages was made", or how ISBN is some sort of "complicated runaround system" that Misplaced Pages has to try to avoid at any cost. (I really don't think very many things could be simpler than a single number which allows a person to track down very nearly every possible provider in the entire world of any given book, but maybe that's just me.) YMMV, I suppose, but if you actually think that linking directly to Google Books in body text is upholding the core values of Misplaced Pages and using the ISBN system is undermining them, then there's really not a whole lot I can say to that except "really?". Bearcat (talk) 06:13, 30 May 2013 (UTC)
- The Google Book tool is meant for compiling references, not for compiling loose text lists. And no matter how many times you assert it, I'm just not buying that searching on an ISBN number is "unhelpful". Could you try explaining how ISBN is such a horrible, terrible, no good, very bad imposition on researchers instead of just saying it is over and over again? Bearcat (talk) 06:23, 30 May 2013 (UTC)
- Firstly, we don't have an obligation to link the reader directly to a copy of the material itself. Think of writing essays in high school or university: did you actually have to hand every essay in on top of a wheelbarrow containing physical copies of every single book you cited, or did you merely have to cite your sources in enough detail that your professor or TA could find the source in question if they needed it?
- And secondly, I think you're missing one of my earlier points: Google Books does not post complete copies of books. It provides partial preview samples with large chunks of the book missing, with the result that even if we do link directly to Google Books, a user who actually wants to read the whole book still ends up having to use the ISBN system to locate a physical copy of the book anyway. So whatever your weird allergy is to ISBN, linking directly to Google Books doesn't even accomplish the desired purpose of avoiding it. Bearcat (talk) 07:01, 30 May 2013 (UTC)

More help with references, please
Hi Moxy,
You provided some useful links to shazster a while back to assist with references for an article we're working on updating - and we'd really appreciate additional input as we try to move form APA style to wiki style (currently working in my sandbox).
I've not had an answer to a question posted in the Tea House and was hoping you might be able to help.
In APA style this in-text citation would be required ....Arrington, Dagenbach, McCartan, & Carr (2000, as cited in Chen, 2012:1) ..... when one is referencing an unseen report (Arrington, etc, 2000) that was cited by someone else whom you are citing (Chen, 2012). 1. Is any of this information to appear in the Wiki text? 2. How is the reference composed to reflect the above situation? As in APA the details concerning Arrington, etc., would not appear in the reference list; only the details concerning Chen, 2012. Thanks, PilgrimB (talk) 06:10, 31 May 2013 (UTC)
Another question is whether it is acceptable to highlight (using bold, italics, underline, for example) to highlight the name of a theory, for example - and if yes - what is the acceptable way to do this.
Thanks in advance PilgrimB (talk) 07:27, 31 May 2013 (UTC)
- I am not sure about this one ..will email a friend ask them. As for the name bold text is fine just add '''text''' = text.Moxy (talk) 18:27, 31 May 2013 (UTC)

regarding
Dupuytren's contracture. I had what was described to me as "a new treatment" of European origin. I received several injections into my contracted tendon (little finger). Oh yes, all that follows is my version of what was happening. I am not a doctor, in fact never even got my Masters, and that would have been in Historic Preservation. That calcified the crud that was holding my tendon hostage. The next day I went in the the doctor, who, after putting my hand "out" took my little finger and pulled it back and there were about 3 loud "CRACKS." Which broke up the crud. I wore a splint for a week - at which time I took off from work, and I have to sleep with it on for 3 months (a month to go) and my hand feels great. I have full mobility and little . . . . irritation. What ever the crud was is still in my hand, I am slowly massaging it away, but it is not a problem of any sort if I don't think about it. The long term answer to your question is still years away but in the short term I am very pleased. I hope this helps you , feel free to get back to me about anything unclear. Oh yes, this condition affects men 10 times as much as women, but please do not tell the editors at Men's rights movement that factoid or it will become yet another part of the conspiracy against men. Hi Moxy
I am dealing with a user who doesn't make his mind yet, that this is an encyclopedia and not a community site, see here. a couple days ago there was a missunderstanding, that user was acussing Tech13 and me of being sock puppets, and then he said it was a joke. Everything remained as a missunderstanding. Now I tried to help him by improving his user page and he totally over reacted and said that Tech13 and myself had vandalized his page, that was not true we post in the edit summary that he could undo our changes... Then he did vandalize my talk page by deleting some comments without permission. Can you help? Miss Bono (zootalk) 16:58, 6 June 2013 (UTC)

Yo Moxy
Re the Deadmau5 thing, and I aver to that strange suggestion made by wetdogmeat that "deadmaus is a perfectly valid alternative" (when it's not, especially to anyone "hip" and I don't mean hipsters), your comment here struck home with me hard "I am hoping this is just related to music articles and has not speared to scientific and history articles." Because it has, it was done with Skwxwu7mesh which is now at Squamish people and the Category:Skwxwu7mesh (in its former diacriticalized form) is was speedy-changed because of the RM at the original endonuym-title into "FOO people" is now a stalemated CfR at Category:Squamish. Any person in BC, looking at that, including a Skwxwu7mesh person, would immediately assume it's about Squamish, British Columbia. Because of the RM that did that, i.e. to the main article title, I've been less successful there; but was successful getting St'at'imc, Secwepemc, Ktunaxa, Nlaka'pamux and Tsilhqot'in moved back to their endonym forms from "FOO people" titles as Lillooet, Shuswap, Kutenai, Thompson and Chilcotin; four of those five are also town/region names and would cause endless category-confusion as well as awkward text after redirect bypasses if they had been allowed to stand; they were speedied unjusstly by Kwami, and I had to fight tooth and nail and provide dozens of references to prove the case they are now part of Canadian English; but I even had to defend Canadian English against people who said I was being parochial and narrow-minded..........needless to say, white people from foreign countries deciding waht native people should be called isn't really appropriate especially given the history of language/culture repression in Canada. The St'at'imc one maybe is still stalemated; its CfR certainly is, and that was to change it from its current diacriticalized form (with even a special t' that's not just t-apostrophe) to plain Latin text, which is how you see it in English. Sto:lo went by without a blip that way, as did its category, though the heavily diacriticalized form used in Halqemeylem is still all over related articles; "Sto:lo" is the most common form in English; most newspapers and publishers don't have the special typefaces needed to do the whacky stuff, same with St'at'imc.... This idea that guidelines are "rules" and "must be enforced" has got to go. "Break All Rules" is a rule that all the rule-mongerers/panderers can't handle IMO. But when Misplaced Pages, given its influence on language and media, starts to wrongly impose its MOS on the outside world, it's big trouble and what Misplaced Pages is not supposed to do and MOSFOLLOW is what should be enforced; or in the case of indigenous articles, the clear delineation of indigenous endonyms vs white names for them, or unclear dab situations like Squamish and Lillooet, is better served by respecting the indigenous presence in anglophone culture. BTW have a look at my comments (a bit irate but apt, pithy is more like it) at the AfD on Steamboats on the Lower Fraser River and Harrison Lake, which Emarsee nominated without even trying to fix. Too many people playing name-change games and pulling stupid CfDs on important topics, often while defending crap like Heritage Grill and Five Stones Church at t he same time, is the bane of Misplaced Pages....and may drive me from here once again; I was the creator of the Fraser/Harrison title and had done all kinds of research towards it; before being blocked from Misplaced Pages for trying to get the Harper government (tm) articles deleted .... I only came back in because of the POV slagging that had overtaken Idle No More and Theresa Spence and that same crew of IP interlopers (I k now it's them from their comments, if not their IPs) were the ones who led the onslaught to get me barred altogether because of me keeping them from using the Adrian Dix article as a repeat of their attack ad......that Sun reporter has never been back since, he was just another SPA.......I'm a good writer and know my shit and the constraints of Misplaced Pages and its odd behaviours - "love of drama" as one retiring editor put it, though he's back now - are often an insult to my intelligence; puerile behaviour run amuck often enough, and smug self-righteous citations of "rules" to justify the inane, or as evasions of obvious fact/logic.....last night, because of what was going on at the two linked articles as the Fraser River CfD, I was up until 3:30 am and my own work is going astray (rebulding my website, doing some webmarketing writing, and getting it together to publish my old sci-fi and some history on ebooks, and doing magazine submissions) is suffering......hell these guys will wind up deleting anything meaningful and Misplaced Pages will be nothing more than overly-cited trivia like Heritage Grill for pity's sake....there's a scene in Rollerball where James Caan has gone to "the archive", which is a bunch of data banks, wanting to find out something about what happened in the 20th Century re his friend's problems....."Are you sure it'll be here, doesn't anything get deleted". "No, we're pretty secure, though someone deleted the whole 13th Century once.....some corrupt popes, that's about it, no big deal" or something to that effect. I wish I could find that scene to cite it at times....Skookum1 (talk) 03:05, 7 June 2013 (UTC)
- Two quotes of my own, one is on my userpage, are apt "A consensus of fools is only foolishness" and "All men are created equal. Some are more equal than others, and that's not a compliment". Another from Isaac Asimov in 1961, about the rise of the uneducated but wealthy/middle-class extreme right "My ignorance is better than your education". That could be paraphrased around here to "MOS is better than real English".....I still can't get over the equivocation re Poland-Lithuania on the hyphen/endash thing, or this bit in the RMs bout "Solicitors General of India" to "Solicitor-Generals of India because of someone saying it's a "post-positive adjective construction". Gag.Skookum1 (talk) 03:12, 7 June 2013 (UTC)
- And as I said to the admin who closed Deadmau5 the wrong way, I'm concerned that it will be used as a precedent for UJ3RK5 which would become Ujerk ("the five is silent"). Somehow he distinguished the two, can't remember how, and said he would be fine with the latter....???? And thankfully Good Olfactory intervened on the speedy on the Alaska-BC/YT Boundary Peaks list which was wrongly speedied, also...I spend more time picking up other people's garbage around here than I do in my own room...most of my time since my return in December has been dealing with such nonsense, in fact.....so many things to get written/organized here, and I get swept up trying to repair the damage that "rule"-inflicting people have wreaked, day by day and day again....I have something else to discuss with you, I'll email you privately.Skookum1 (talk) 03:19, 7 June 2013 (UTC)
- Not good to see this problem moving to other areas - you like I have been here for a long time - long enough to remember when the best argument was what carried a conversation. We have a new generation of editors (those here for only 4 years and up) that think policy is always best because they read it. I am think that us old timers have simply made to many rules to follow LOL. As for all the problems above - perhaps its time to get a bunch of old time content editors to review the policies that seem to be written by people concerned with style over accessibility and overall correctness. I see above we have lots to work on...I am leaving Brazil behind and will start looking at all the above. - Re reviewing the policies, I don't know if you took note of my appeal on CANTALK about working towards proper guidelines for indigenous names and content.....I also have an issue with people de-capitalizing what are proper names in BC, i.e. the Interior, I've even seen the "lower mainland" that way......that was the central issue with the Boundary Peaks list, too.....vs the correspondings BC-AB border one where the term as used isn't capitalized...for good reason. But good reasons don't hold weight around here, stampede thinking and rule-waving and "yo'ure not being polite" crap from people who themselves aren't polite is getting noxious; I won't allow Kwami to post on my talkpage anymore because of the crap he pulled.....Skookum1 (talk) 03:31, 7 June 2013 (UTC)

- the Canadian edition of the HuffPo is a rightist rag, but still condenses stuff that I'd never see in the major papers; and its forums are not as ridigly controlled as the Sun and Globe....the Globe's declining readership, even before the paywall went up, IMO is because people are tired of reading lies and spin and being told what to think. There remains that issue around here about blogs often being the only sources for some info, which of course the rule-monkeys dismiss out of hand either because "self-published" or because they're "only opinion". Yeah, well so are the major papers, and then some, they hide behind the notion that t hey are "peer reviewed" (by their own kind and/or editor/publisher) but the bullshit about me in the Sun (see the media links in the template on Talk:Adrian Dix and my own comments on some at those links is demonstration that they are not reliable sources on many things....not at all. All that is another issue I've tabled for a while, re which blogs should be admitted, e.g. Laila Yuile, Rafe Mair, Sean Holman and various others......if not for the BC Mary blog, for example, most of what is known about BC Rail would never have come to light because CanWest was suppressing the news....and the CBC was following suit; the idea of a Tory on the CBC Board is anathema though, despite the CBC's already existing toadiness.....I'll find that CBC panel on Question Period, it was an interesting debate.....you know the one, Chantal Hebert, Andrew Coyne etc...Skookum1 (talk) 04:16, 7 June 2013 (UTC)

what is wrong with the diagram?
Hi! I just wanted to know what is wrong on the diagram, that was supposed to explain to people who don't understand the meaning of WP:IGNORE what does it actually mean. I know that for someone who is on wikipedia for more than 6 years or longer it is quite obvious, but there are also some people who are here for few weeks and have no idea what is meant by that. The IGNORE rule is one of most important rules on wikipedia, it is even part of fifth pillar :-). I think it deserves more than just 1 short sentence of explanation, that is easy to misunderstand. If the problem was a size of image, it can be made smaller - it is svg so resizing shouldn't be problem Petrb (talk) 06:19, 7 June 2013 (UTC)
- I moved it to explanation page then, maybe it fit there better. Have a nice day! Petrb (talk) 06:34, 7 June 2013 (UTC)

Gallery
Hi Moxy, I wanted to talk to you about....photos! Not to irritate an open nerve, so please bear with me :) Climate section: at 1 point there were 4 pictures of snow, and 1 of a sunny beach, which is funny, but there is something to this. First, please check the France, section on Geography. I think that gallery looks well, and in Brazil's case definitely serves a purpose. A gallery could show so much more then a thousand words. As it is, the 1 pic of a beach isn't correct, right now it does freeze in the highlands and the south, floods in the north and drought in the northeast. I do believe that a gallery would be excellent there...however, I also realize that if i would put one up it would open the door for others as well...perhaps better shelve the idea for now. Would like to hear your feedback though
- You could add a gallery - but this would lead to the article never getting GA status and being tag with Template:Cleanup-gallery as with the France article.Moxy (talk) 15:16, 11 June 2013 (UTC)

Oh, it was you....
I see Aboriginal Canadian personalities roll by now and then and wonder who changed it from its former title. it was you. I'm uncomfortable with the phrasing of the title. I don't know of any other article with the "FOO personalities" formation....isn't it always "notable FOO"? This isn't a list article or I'd just move it. In general I'm also uncomfortable with all the "ETHNOFOO Canadian" articles, though aboriginal people are of course a special case, and make much ado of their heritage; as do the French of course....the genetic barrel-scraping re everyone from Joni Mitchell to Colin Hansen is just weird when we all identify as Canadians; although in cases like Hnatyshyn and Ed Schreyer the media trumped their ethnic heritage as first of its kind for their positions, and so on.....as with the ongoing obsession in Misplaced Pages over visible minority demographics tables for towns that have almost no visible minorities, I'm finding it all just very weird.....not the country I was raised in, where your background didn't matter....unless someone made it matter.Skookum1 (talk) 03:33, 22 June 2013 (UTC)
- Move it to what ever .Moxy (talk) 05:49, 22 June 2013 (UTC)
- Ya dunno to what, just noting the unusual title "personalities" ; not that it implies psychiatric profiles, but.... LOL.Skookum1 (talk) 05:53, 22 June 2013 (UTC)
- I am not sure - I made the page but have no clue what is best - was moved to somewhat match the others in the template {{People of Canada}} like List of Canadian sports personalities - List of Canadian Broadcasting Corporation personalities - List of Canadian radio personalities - List of Canadian television personalities - List of CTV personalities Moxy (talk) 06:05, 22 June 2013 (UTC)
- Hmmmm is that used in other countries? thing on the aboriginal pages is that literary and political figures are also present, and in those cases "personalities" isn't quite right huh?Skookum1 (talk) 06:26, 24 June 2013 (UTC)
A kitten for you!
Hello! I noticed that you're a frequent contributor to Misplaced Pages and are a part of the film "task force"??? (I'm not even sure what that is) I'm just getting into contributing to the site but I'm not too familiar with the whole process and I'm admittedly overwhelmed by the many ways that you can...I was wondering if you wouldn't mind sharing some insight on how to best connect with other people in order to collaborate?

New RM
I have started another RM on the deadmaus talk page as the closing admin of the previous one ignored the clear consensus to move back to deadmau5 and stated that another was needed. Feel free to comment! PantherLeapord (talk) 05:03, 27 June 2013 (UTC)

Arms of Canada
Re: Could we get you to read over Commons:Coats of arms before nominating anymore for deletion.Moxy (talk) 9:16 pm, Today (UTC+4.5)
- Hey Moxy, thanks for the response. Yes I have read it over a couple of times. I've quoted quite a bit from it. Did you get a chance to go through in any detail all of the info on Commons:File talk:Coat of Arms of Canada (1923).jpg? Fry hasn't really told me what he is referring to exactly in COA:POA however, so I'm hoping that cooler heads could prevail here. I understand that: "So, CoA found on Commons may be (1) reproductions of PD-old artworks, (2) recent artwork with a clear "free" licence, (3) self-made reproductions.". Got it. I also completely understand that generally, Crown copyright expires after 50 years, completely on board with that. As I quoted from one of the discussions that I've gotten myself tangled up in:
- "Official government symbols: Arms of Canada as revised in 1994,...Arms of Canada as designed in 1921 and revised in 1957" where "The official symbols of the Government of Canada are protected under the Trade-marks Act and the Copyright Act and cannot be used or reproduced without authorization", and "The Government of Canada does not permit commercial use or reproduction of the official symbols...Marks and designs similar to the official symbols are pursued as a copyright or trade-mark infringement" (source here). So the Government of Canada is of the opinion that the 1921, 1952, and 1994 Arms are still under Crown copyright, and that any 'designs similar to the official symbols are pursued as a copyright infringement'.
- While I understand that Misplaced Pages policy may generalise that all COA are free if they are re-drawn, or PD, the Government of Canada clearly states otherwise, and through the Berne Convention, copyright in Canada also applies in the U.S. and therefore Misplaced Pages.
- If the Crown states that the 1921 Arms are still protected under copyright, then it has clearly not expired after 50 years, which makes sense as Canada has perpetual Crown copyright which is used under the royal prerogative, and I've linked to three different sources which show that this does in fact exist (I had never heard of it before this string of incidents and research, I assumed it would have been known here by those more experienced in such matters, although as it turns out that's not the case, my bad for assuming).
- Now I may very well be missing the point that you are trying to convey here, and if so, I'd greatly appreciate anything you have to offer. Like I said, I stumbled upon this copyright issue while serfing through government websites while looking for something else, noticed that they were PD here, and thought it pertinent that important national symbols are properly licenced. I certainly do not enjoy upsetting people, being called names, and sworn at. Cheers. (terribly sorry for such a long message, hope you don't mind) trackratte (talk) 17:27, 1 July 2013 (UTC)
- Did not see that page ... I agree... but the image (that us being used) is over 50 years old so the copyright has expired as far as I can tell - - Terms of use - Copyright: Expired . I am no expert but this has come up before a few times with the status quo as the outcome.Moxy (talk) 17:51, 1 July 2013 (UTC)
- I did a deletions archive search before I submitted any deletion requests, and I didn't go through it in great detail, but the sources that i thought relelvent were not part of the discourse. Thanks for that source! As I mentioned elsewhere, I sent an email to Publications Canada for clarification, as the TBS clearly says 'any design similar' to the the Arms of 1921-1994 is Copyrighted, where that Archives source clarly says it's not. trackratte (talk) 19:18, 1 July 2013 (UTC)

Rolling Stones photos
Hey Moxy-- Brother, I've been in the hospital most of the week until a couple of hours ago. I'm probably going back soon. My username is the same on any wiki, including Commons. I just uploaded a ton of Rolling Stones photos from a (now) in the last few years photographer friend who also gave me some of Al Kooper, both of which I uploaded and placed. If you click on any of the Stones' pics, and see them in Commons, look for the source. I don't know anything about Boston and their current lineup, do you? Just follow the source of the Flickr source of them all from Michael Borkson. He went for the Stones, but said there were maybe 4 acts before the Rolling Stones played, including New Kids On The Block. The reason I am putting this in your lap is b/c back a couple years ago, we couldn't find any pics of all the Rolling Stones in the same shot. Now I not only have several, but they also include one of Mick Taylor who toured with them, Lisa Fischer, and Darryl Jones on tour. Please take a look and see if I missed anything, OK? I'll be back in the hospital in the next couple of days, and was rushing things without my reading glasses and my talk page is full of "bracket bot" and "disambig" notices, but please respond there. I'd give anything for a laptop to the hospitals! xoxox my brother! --Leahtwosaints (talk) 08:18, 4 July 2013 (UTC)

SMILING
OH, MY BROTHER-- What kind of editor would I be if not for awesome amazing mentors like you?!! You put a smile on my face when it was most needed... likely I will go back in the hospital again after the next few days; I convinced them to let me escape, since here in the United States, July 4th and 5th tend to require more hospital beds when you put fireworks and whiskey in the hands of nitwits thinking to celebrate the country's independance, and end up doing it in the intensive care unit which more and more freqiemtly is becoming my home. ;) Yeah. --Leahtwosaints (talk) 07:09, 5 July 2013 (UTC)
Visual editor and documentation
Hi, I've seen comments you made earlier this year about the need to update documentation with the advent of the visual editor. You may be interested in this thread. --RA (✍) 22:34, 5 July 2013 (UTC)
does not matter
Since you say that wikipedia is not a gallery, because that Argentina has a lot of pictures? you do not get drawn at all?
Thanks for cleaning up the WPUS members list
I just wanted to stop by and say thanks for cleaning up the member list. I think we would be fine removing them but commenting them out is fine too. Kumioko (talk) 21:28, 7 July 2013 (UTC)
Reverting edits
Would you be able revert the edits done to Steve Kent (politician) back to my last edits? Somebody keeps putting in unsourced info to bring up his past involvement with the Liberal Party, which is already documented. Newfoundlander&Labradorian (talk) 01:19, 8 July 2013 (UTC)
RfC
I noticed you participated in the Deadmau5/Deadmaus RM and I was wondering if you were willing to leave your two cents here at Talk:Tech Nine#Requested move 2 to overturn another horrible move based on a name no reliable sources refer to the subject as. I am just trying to get consensus to move it back to Tech N9ne in the same manner Deadmau5 was moved back per WP:COMMONNAME. If you have the chance I would appreciate it. STATic message me! 15:58, 8 July 2013 (UTC)
