The Foundation for Economic Education (FEE) is one of the oldest free-market organizations in the United States. FEE says its mission is "to inspire, educate and connect future leaders with the economic, ethical and legal principles of a free society." FEE states that its educational programs and publications provide the resources high school and college students need to become effective advocates of liberty and the free-market system.
FEE lectures are presented either as part of week long team-taught seminars presented in several U.S. locations, or are single-speaker events in the Evenings at FEE series. FEE publications include The Freeman (a monthly magazine) and various pamphlets, lectures, and libertarian texts.
FEE's office was initially located in the New York City but later relocated to its current site (an 1800s residence) in Irvington, New York. FEE opened a branch office in downtown Atlanta in 2010.
History
Founding
FEE was founded in 1946, with financial support from The William Volker Fund, to promote the merits of free-market economics and Christian morality to opinion-makers. The founding documents of FEE warned: "The job of economic education must be undertaken now while those who appreciate the value of liberty are still in a position to support it." In its first years, FEE opposed the Marshall Plan, Social Security, and Minimum Wages, among other American social and economic policies. In its programs, FEE supported the advocacy of its free-market views with evocations of Christian principles alongside economic efficiency. Board member Jasper Crane stated, "we are going to be beaten if we rely entirely on the argument of dollars and cents."
FEE's website states that it is one of the oldest free-market organizations in the United States.
People
The initial officers of FEE were Leonard E. Read as president, Henry Hazlitt as vice-president, and chairman David Goodrich of B. F. Goodrich. Read served as president from 1946 until his death in 1983. Perry E. Gresham immediately followed his friend Read as president of the organization in 1983. The presidency of FEE from 1983 to 1984 was held by John Sparks Sr., from 1984 to 1985 by Bob Love, from 1985 to 1988 by a series of acting presidents, then from 1988 to 1992 by Bruce Evans. After retiring from Grove City College where he taught economics, Hans Sennholz served as president of the Foundation from 1992 to 1997. Before serving as Chair of the Department of Economics at George Mason University, Donald J. Boudreaux served as president of the Foundation from 1997 to 2001. Economist, investment analyst, professor and author Mark Skousen served as president from 2001 to 2002. Author and professor Richard Ebeling served as president from 2003 to 2008. Economist, author, and professor Lawrence W. Reed became the current president in 2008.
Significance
Murray Rothbard credited FEE with creating a "crucial open center" for a libertarian movement. Friedrich Hayek saw FEE as part of the inspiration for the formation of the Mont Pelerin Society in 1947. FEE provided a financial subsidy to the Mont Pelerin Society.
Location
The original headquarters of FEE occupied two rooms on the 30th floor of the Equitable Building in Manhattan.
FEE is currently located in a formerly abandoned residence called Hillside, on a seven acre site in Irvington, New York. The house was built in 1889 for physician Carroll Dunham and his wife, Margaret Dows. It comprises 34 rooms, 16 fireplaces, and glass designed by Irvington resident Louis Comfort Tiffany. The grounds were designed by Charles Eliot with later alterations by Frederick Law Olmsted. In 2010, FEE opened a branch office in downtown Atlanta.
Programs
The FEE describes its mission as to "inspire, educate and connect future leaders with the economic, ethical and legal principles of a free society."

FEE offers week-long seminars for high school students, undergraduates, and graduate students. The Freedom Academy seminars are designed for high school students and focus on economics, history, politics, social science, philosophy, education, business, and current events.
For undergraduates, FEE offers Freedom University seminars in "History", "Current Events", "Communicating Liberty", and "Austrian Economics". History seminars are designed for university undergraduates interested in the contrast between liberty and power in the history of the United States. Study begins at the American founding, proceeds through the Great Depression noting its lasting effects, and concludes with an analysis of communism in the 20th century. Current Events seminars are designed for university undergraduates interested in current public policy issues. Topics of note include healthcare, immigration, and environmental policy. Communicating Liberty seminars are designed for university undergraduates who have previously attended a FEE seminar and wish to increase the effectiveness of their communication. Lectures and workshops center on topics like blogging, op-eds, social media, public speaking, event planning, and networking. Austrian Economics seminars are designed for university undergraduates interested in an introduction to the thoughts and thinkers of the Austrian school of economics. Topics range from free-markets to business cycles and globalization.
The FEE's "Advanced Austrian Economics" seminars are presented. These courses explore historical and contemporary Austrian economic theory in depth, and are intended for college- and graduate-level students.
Speakers at FEE
Since 1946 FEE has hosted and published lectures by various scholars, writers, and activists. Notable lecturers have included Ludwig von Mises, F.A. Hayek, Henry Hazlitt, Milton Friedman, James Buchanan, Vernon Smith, Walter Williams, F.A. "Baldy" Harper, and William F. Buckley Jr.. The FEE also sponsors an Evenings at FEE series of events. These events have hosted speakers like Harry Browne and Chip Mellor.
Publications
In 1945, Jasper Crane (an employee of ]) and Alfred Kohlberg, started a capital campaign for the organization. After contributions from J. Howard Pew, Inland Steel, Quaker Oats, and Sears, sufficient funding was available for FEE to start publishing The Freeman in 1950. FEE publishes books, articles, and pamphlets both on paper and digitally that the foundation considers classic works on liberty. These include the notable publications I, Pencil: My Family Tree by Read, The Law by Bastiat, Anything That's Peaceful by Read, Planned Chaos by Mises, Industry-Wide Bargaining by Wolman, Up from Poverty: Reflections on the Ills of Public Assistance by Sennholz, and The Virtue of Liberty by Machan.

The Foundation for Economic Education (FEE), one of the oldest free-market organizations in the United States, was founded in 1946 by Leonard E. Read to study and advance the freedom philosophy. FEE's mission is to offer the most consistent case for the first principles of freedom: the sanctity of private property, individual liberty, the rule of law, the free market, and the moral superiority of individual choice and responsibility over coercion. To help people rediscover how essential freedom is to human existence and to demonstrate how dangerous it is to move toward any form of collectivism, FEE offers a comprehensive educational program to all students of liberty.
