San Bernardino Express, also known as sbX, is a brand of bus rapid transit service that will traverse major surface streets throughout the Omnitrans service area, which covers most of the 15 cities and unincorporated areas of San Bernardino County between the Riverside and Los Angeles county lines and the foothills of the San Gabriel and San Bernardino mountain ranges. sbX is the first and only bus rapid transit line in Southern California's Inland Empire, the 12th largest metropolitan area of the United States. With the construction of the first line (E Street Corridor) underway, the 15.7-mile corridor spans between northern San Bernardino and Loma Linda. It will include 16 art-inspired stations at key university, government, business, entertainment and medical centers as well as four park-and-ride facilities. Construction is set to finish in late 2013 with service starting in early 2014. Omnitrans has received a grant from the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) to conduct an alternatives analysis for the Holt Boulevard/4th Street Corridor and the cities of Ontario and Fontana are both conducting studies on the feasibility of bus rapid transit along the corridor in their cities. Additionally, planners in the City of Rancho Cucamonga are exploring recommendations on how to support high-density transit-oriented development along the Foothill Boulevard corridor (Historic Route 66)
Highlights of the E street Corridor-
- 16 Stations –Reflect the culture & heritage of the communities they serve. Shelters provide protection from sun, wind, rain and snow.
- Center-Running Stations
- Side-Running Stations
- 4 park-and-ride locations – Kendall Drive/Palm Avenue, E Street/Marshall Boulevard (two), E Street/Court Street/Rialto Avenue (city hall parking structure), and Anderson Street/Redlands Boulevard.
- 14 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), 60-foot articulated buses
- 10-minute headways during peak hours; 15-minutes off-peak hours
- Wheelchair accessible boarding platforms with ticket-vending machines and electronic message boards
- Interior bike racks
- Surveillance cameras on station platforms, in vehicles and at park-and-ride lots
Omnitrans has begun making upgrades to its East Valley vehicle maintenance facility in San Bernardino, including modifications to its parking lot, service bays bus wash and fueling facility, to accommodate 60-foot buses, all of which have been purchased and acquired, to run on the sbX bus rapid transit (BRT) line.
