===2013 and Final Departure===
Clare met ] off-screen in Las Vegas when he began flirting with her after he and ] had an argument. She returned to Hollyoaks village shortly after Paul's return where he revealed to ] that Mercedes had gone missing in Vegas after their argument. Clare (claiming to be called 'Cassandra Knight') tracks down Paul at his apartment and pretends to be just as shocked as Paul when he opens a letter addressed to him demanding '£100,000 or Mercedes dies'. She informed Paul that she saw Mercedes getting into a limo with another man in Vegas; Paul correctly assumes Clare wrote the ransom note, but soon discards this theory as he then suspects Mercedes probably wrote the letter herself. Clare returns to her hotel room where Mercedes is tied to a chair. Clare tells her that Paul suspects Mercedes wrote the ransom note, and that they need to work harder to get ransom money out of him, before punching her in the face.

Clare soon persuades Paul to buy the club, , so that they can be business partners. He initially agrees, but he then discovers from Jim that 'Cassandra Knight' does not exist. When he confronts her about this, she reveals that her real name is Clare Devine and that she gets by through conning rich men (failing to tell him about her history in the village). She then says that she isn't conning him, because if she were, she would have finished with him already. He then decides to buy Chez Chez. However, before they both sign the ownership papers, Clare accidentally shows her hatred for Mercedes. Realising she must of known Mercedes prior to their meeting in Vegas, Paul rips up the papers and once again confronts Clare, who attacks Paul and flees. She is then seen returning to her hotel room, where Mercedes is seen relaxing and their conversation shows that she's apparently helping Clare with the scam.

Clare then holds Mercedes to ransom for real when Mercedes realises that Paul genuinely loves her and locks her in a metal cage surrounded by two rabid dogs. She then ends up locking Paul in there and hits him in the head with a rock. Clare gives Mercedes the key to get out of the cage but as she and Paul attempt to gain freedom, the two dogs rush back towards them, barking angrily, so the twosome have to lock themselves back in again. They have a heart to heart until he falls unconscious from the head wound, but the ambulance soon arrives, just as Mercedes and Myra have a tearful reunion. Clare sneaks into The Dog without being noticed. She creeps up behind Tom who is playing a game and he is terrified as he finally comes face to face with Clare. He tries to run but he is not fast enough. Clare makes Tom lock them both in his room. Clare angrily accuses Tom of having her ransom money, which he denies; he then offers his ] and tries to tell her there is money in the kitchen and the till. Clare gets angry at this and brings up Max's name, reminding Tom that he remembers how angry she got with Max. When Jack knocks at the door, Clare makes Tom get rid of him. He is a little harsh to Jack, telling him he is grumpy and to leave him alone. A while later, loud music comes from Tom's room and Jack and Darren rush to Tom's door trying to open it and, realising it's locked and that Tom is in danger, Darren smashes the door in to see Clare holding Tom with a golf club. Clare tries to escape and runs through the pub with Darren giving chase, but she falls over a stool. Darren manages to catch Clare and pins her to the ground until the police come and arrest Clare once again. Clare tells the Osbornes it's not over and that she knows Tom has her money. She is then taken away.

Bissix told a '']'' reporter that she would resume filming in July with her return airing in September. She said her return storyline was a "top secret" and that "just when I think she can’t get any worse, she does."<ref>{{cite web|title=I'm too old for Hollyoaks, says soap beauty Gemma Bissix (aged 30)|url=http://www.birminghammail.co.uk/lifestyle/showbiz/im-old-hollyoaks-says-soap-4282134|work=]|publisher=(])|accessdate=17 October 2013|date=9 June 2013}}</ref> Clare returned on-screen during the show's "first look" episode on 26 September 2013 and was being held in prison. Clare Devine (previously Cunningham) is a fictional character from the British Channel 4 soap opera Hollyoaks, played currently by Gemma Bissix and previously by Samantha Rowley.

Development

Multiple Enemies

Clare married Max Cunningham in order to scam money from him. His friend Sam O'Brien saw past Clare and tried to warn him, however Clare managed to convince Max that she truly loved him. Max finally realised Clare's true colours when she tried to kill him. With her enemy list growing, Clare also made a rival in Warren Fox and Louise Summers and later Calvin Valentine. Clare convinced Louise to have an abortion of her and Calvin's child, before telling him what Louise had done. She turned Max against O.B. and got Tom Cunningham put into social care. She lastly made an enemy of Justin Burton, who realised she had been partly responsible for the deaths of his sisters, Mel and Sophie. Clare, whilst leaning over a banister at The Loft, was pushed over by an unknown figure. The police questioned all who had a motive. The culprit was later revealed to be Justin. It was the revelation of who pushed her that led to Clare kidnapping Katy Fox, which finally led to Clare's presumed death.

2009 and 2013 return

On 25 March 2009, it was revealed Gemma Bissix would reprise her role as Clare. Clare's return to Hollyoaks village was to tie in with the departures of enemies Warren Fox (Jamie Lomas) and Justin Burton (Chris Fountain).

Speaking of her return, Bissix stated, "She's back for revenge. Obviously Warren and Justin are involved but one minute she's not there and the next minute she is - you don't expect her to come back. She's definitely a shadow of her former self — in the nicest possible way! She's deranged and completely psychotic. She's greasy-haired and looking like a trashy prostitute, but it's absolutely fabulous! No holds barred as far as she's concerned, and that's what's been great for me to play. Before you always had to hide Clare's nastiness and act like she's nice and normal, but this time everybody knows what she's like so there's no hiding the psychopath. That's why I don't think the audience will be disappointed — I think they'll love it or hate it!"

Showbiz and television news website Digital Spy held a poll asking readers whether they were looking forward to Clare's return. 54.2% of people said they could not wait for Gemma Bissix to return, 23.5% decided they were not sure and the remaining 22.3% claimed that it would ruin the character's "superb" exit from the show in 2007.

In February 2013 it was announced that Gemma Bissix, will return to the show again in March 2013, 4 years after she left in 2009. Bissix will be involved in Doctor Browning and Mercedes when she returns. Bissix started filming her return scenes on 3 March 2013.

After spending time inside Clare will return to the village in order to take control of the club. In June 2013, Bissix confirmed that she would return to filming in July 2013 for scenes due to air in September.

Reception

Gemma Bissix (Pictured) won several awards for her portrayal

Gemma Bissix became the first actress from Hollyoaks to win 'Villain of the Year' at the British Soap Awards in 2007. Gemma was also nominated for 'Best Actress' the very same year, and won the award for 'Best Exit' in 2008. The scene in which Clare and Katy Fox drive over the cliff also won the award for 'Spectacular Scene of the Year'. The character was selected as one of the "top 100 British soap characters" by industry experts for a poll to be run by What's on TV, with readers able to vote for their favourite character to discover "Who is Soap's greatest Legend?"

Before her portrayal of Clare, Bissix played Clare Bates in BBC One soap-opera EastEnders. In 2008, after her departure from Hollyoaks, Bissix returned to EastEnders. It was noted that the 2008 "minx" version of Clare Bates was similar to the character Clare Devine. Despite them being entirely different characters, it was suggested in The Herald that Gemma Bissix actually reprised the role between the two soaps. Bissix has acknowledged the comparison between the two characters, but maintains that they differ: "A lot of people ask me this. Clare Bates is a minx and dresses to impress, using her sexuality to get where she wanted Clare Devine doesn't have the emotion Clare Bates does. Clare Devine kills people, she tells little children that they're the reason for their parents' death!"

Radio Times listed Clare at number one in their feature on 'bunny boilers'. Describing Clare they stated: "Devine by name, devilish by nature she made enemies easily". They opined about the Who pushed Clare storyline stating: "when she was pushed over a balcony and almost killed, the list of suspects was longer than the electoral roll." They also stated they had a feeling it wasn't the last viewers would see of Clare.
