Charles Karel Bouley

Thank you for you assistance on Karel's page. The vile vandalism is an ongoing problem. There was a permanent block on his page for a couple years (by Sarek, who knows the history). When blocks are removed the vandalism starts up again. Would you consider re-instating a permanent block on his page? It makes life easier for us all. Namaste — DocOfSocTalk01:47, 18 April 2013 (UTC)

I was thinking about it, and I'll do something or other if it happens again. I'm thinking that pending changes might be a slightly better option here, but I'm not sure. --Bongwarrior (talk) 12:49, 18 April 2013 (UTC)

Template:In the news

Hi! Could you check this edit, as I think it has broken the "nocurrenteventslink" logic. Over at Portal:Current events, there is an ugly black "More current events..." label, which the nocurrenteventslink parameter is supposed to eliminate. -- John of Reading (talk) 21:14, 24 April 2013 (UTC)

I think it may have been broken before that. I've either fixed it or broken it more. --Bongwarrior (talk) 21:33, 24 April 2013 (UTC)
Looks good to me! Thanks for fixing. -- John of Reading (talk) 21:37, 24 April 2013 (UTC)

Sorry to intrude...

Hey, Bongwarrior, I was going through trying to get some rough usage statistics for my orange bar script when I noticed that you seem to be having issues with its installation. The problem is that the "importScript" part needs to be in the monobook.js page, not the .css page. I've switched some things around for you: here's the change to the monobook.css page and here's the change to the monobook.js page. Let me know if it starts working, or if you have any other issues. Thanks! Writ Keeper  13:26, 13 May 2013 (UTC)

Thank you. I was hoping that the bar would have been restored for everyone by now, but I got tired of waiting. We'll see if that did the trick. --Bongwarrior (talk) 00:29, 14 May 2013 (UTC)

ITN: Carbon dioxide measurements

In "Measurements of carbon dioxide in Earth's atmosphere exceed 400 parts per million, the highest level since the Pliocene epoch", could you please change the Wikilink behind "Measurements" to Keeling Curve, because that is the article on the actual measurement, not the institution that conducts it. --bender235 (talk) 15:13, 13 May 2013 (UTC)

Sounds like a good idea, thank you for the suggestion. --Bongwarrior (talk) 00:22, 14 May 2013 (UTC)

Deletion of Tears of the Innocent

I posted a i portance of the page there and it still got deleted.Tearsoftheinnocent (talk) 22:58, 14 May 2013 (UTC)

I'm sorry, but it needs to demonstrate encyclopedic importance. Since the band has yet to even release an album, it doesn't appear that they need to be covered in an encyclopedia just yet. --Bongwarrior (talk) 23:34, 14 May 2013 (UTC)

Kai the Hatchet Wielding Hitchhiker

I'd like to know why you decided Kai was too insignificant for Misplaced Pages.

21:58, 5 February 2013 Bongwarrior (talk | contribs) deleted page Kai hitchhiker (A7: No explanation of the subject's significance (real person, animal, organization, web content or organized event))

The guy's a meme, has gone viral with millions of viewers, been on Kimmel, discussed on Colbert, et alii, etc. etc. And this week he's supposedly murdered somebody and was a fugitive until arrested last night (16 May 2013).

It strikes me as kind of an arbitrary decision, a matter of your own personal taste, and certainly unfair that one Misplaced Pages editor can decide what and who is significant or not.

The most curious part about your deletion, by far, is that your own User Page features the big giant quote:

"Misplaced Pages is the best thing ever. Anyone in the world can write anything they want about any subject, so you know you are getting the best possible information."

Not only is that highly ironic, but I'm very sorry to say that it's somewhat hypocritical. I don't mean to be rude, but I'm afraid I don't know any other word for it. Sorry.

Ghengis Fresh (talk) 16:50, 17 May 2013 (UTC)

Comment Please remember to assume good faith. I've reviewed the deleted content, and it did not appear to meet inclusion guidelines at the time of its deletion in February (it looks to me like the deleted content was cut-and-pasted from elsewhere, a no-no, and it was written in an inappropriate tone, poorly sourced and wasn't really in compliance with biography of living persons policy). Things change, and maybe the subject's eligible for inclusion now, probably under his real name rather than the meme. There is no bar to appropriate, well-sourced re-creation of deleted content. It appears to me that deletion was the proper decision, given the time and the content. I'd suggest reading WP:BLP, WP:BLP1E (which, despite its name, probably still applies), and WP:BLPCRIME. And again, please do not turn a concern about a deletion into a personalized complaint. Acroterion (talk) 17:07, 17 May 2013 (UTC)
My response to comment below about Kai:
Well, why were those reasons not given originally? It's hard to have good faith under those conditions.
In any event, it hardly seems right that one person can decide what is and is not significant. Ghengis Fresh (talk) 17:15, 17 May 2013 (UTC)
It's a deletion log, not an extended meditation on what, at the time of its deletion, looked like a poorly-written account of a single event that clearly didn't meet the notability guidelines. That's what "no indication of notability" means, and administrators are delegated the permission to make such judgments by the community. As I noted, deletion isn't forever, unless it's clear vandalism, defamatory, an invasion of privacy, a hoax or the result of a community discussion. Give it some time, once you spend a while around here you'll understand how and why things work the way they do. Acroterion (talk) 17:24, 17 May 2013 (UTC)

Same. Please keep an eye on this IP-jumping vandal; you may need to block unregistered users from acanac.net temporarily, or multiple netblocks (though it'll probably be harder to track those down ahead of time), as that user is able to easily change IPs within multiple assigned blocks. BGP info confirms a bunch of possible netblocks with similar metrics in that AS. (Stupid ISPs assigning way too much non-contiguous space to a single general location for no good reason.) – 2001:db8:: (rfc | diff) 09:29, 27 May 2013 (UTC)

Offensive edit message

Re this edit: I don't know the movie, I do find the edit notice very offensive. I think it probably does sum up the editor's attitude to other editors, given my experience of interactions with him. I mentioned it at ANI but it was ignored. (In followup to that, I raised a discussion, the unhelpful responses to which were enough to make me consider abandoning the encyclopedia.) PamD 07:56, 11 June 2013 (UTC)

It's from Full Metal Jacket. As someone who is familiar with the movie, it still strikes me as a spectacularly bad idea for an edit notice, and I'm hoping that he'll recognize that and change it of his own accord. --Bongwarrior (talk) 17:31, 11 June 2013 (UTC)

Many thanks

Hello B. Just wanted to say thanks for taking care of both articles and the IP from Indonesia that was messing with them. I noticed that you had to do more than just protect the pages including removing fake GA stuff and bogus cats. Your thoroughness is much appreciated. Enjoy the rest of your weekend. MarnetteD | Talk 04:46, 23 June 2013 (UTC)

I just saw your post about the fact that the articles hadn't been protected before. Tricky little disruptor. Apologies for missing that. Considering the number of IPs used they may be back when the protection expires but I will try and keep an eye on that. Thanks again. MarnetteD | Talk 04:52, 23 June 2013 (UTC)
No problem. I opted for rather longish protections because it seems like this has been going on for a while - in most cases, a first-time protection would have been in the neighborhood of a few days to a week. Hopefully this solves the problem for a while. --Bongwarrior (talk) 04:59, 23 June 2013 (UTC)

Thanks much

I see you protected Theodore Rex (film). No need to switch to PC. I only requested PC over semi because the last time I requested semi for an article (SR-22 (insurance)), I got PC instead on the responding admin's discretion. Thanks again! —/Mendaliv//Δ's/ 20:08, 23 June 2013 (UTC)

TemplateData

Hey Bongwarrior

I'm sending you this because you've made quite a few edits to the template namespace in the past couple of months. If I've got this wrong, or if I haven't but you're not interested in my request, don't worry; this is the only notice I'm sending out on the subject :).

So, as you know (or should know - we sent out a centralnotice and several watchlist notices) we're planning to deploy the VisualEditor on Monday, 1 July, as the default editor. For those of us who prefer markup editing, fear not; we'll still be able to use the markup editor, which isn't going anywhere.

What's important here, though, is that the VisualEditor features an interactive template inspector; you click an icon on a template and it shows you the parameters, the contents of those fields, and human-readable parameter names, along with descriptions of what each parameter does. Personally, I find this pretty awesome, and from Monday it's going to be heavily used, since, as said, the VisualEditor will become the default.

The thing that generates the human-readable names and descriptions is a small JSON data structure, loaded through an extension called TemplateData. I'm reaching out to you in the hopes that you'd be willing and able to put some time into adding TemplateData to high-profile templates. It's pretty easy to understand (heck, if I can write it, anyone can) and you can find a guide here, along with a list of prominent templates, although I suspect we can all hazard a guess as to high-profile templates that would benefit from this. Hopefully you're willing to give it a try; the more TemplateData sections get added, the better the interface can be. If you run into any problems, drop a note on the Feedback page.

Thanks, Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 21:47, 28 June 2013 (UTC)

Procedural Decline at RFPP

Hi Bongwarrior,

I noticed that you procedurally declined an entire batch of my requests for unprotection at RFPP a few days ago. Out of the 24 requests that I made four were originally protected by a colleague who is still active and still is a sysop, these were protections originally made in 2010 you know. I act with Due diligence when I make the request at RFPP, those 24 requests are out of about 60 pages that I examined that night. The reason I don't (usually) talk to the protecting administrator is two-fold: Most administrators don't, I've found, remember why they protected a page three years ago; and, I've found that generally, the administrators patrolling RFPP have a better, more consistent understanding of the protection policy. I am familiar with your work for years to keep the encyclopedia safe and clean, and I thank you for it, but the procedural decline is not, I think, in the best interests of the project. I will contact the four administrators that are active, and I ask that you review the other 20 on their own merits. Regards, Crazynas 18:23, 29 June 2013 (UTC)

I relisted the requests for pages protected by inactive, retired or vanished administrators, and contacted the active ones. Regards, Crazynas 18:56, 29 June 2013 (UTC)
I'll be working my way down the list over the course of the evening; so far, they look like pretty reasonable requests. I didn't realize so many of those admins were either inactive or no longer admins - the handful that I checked were active, so I assumed that most of them were. I'm sorry for making you do double work; that's my mistake, and I thank you for taking the time to list them again. --Bongwarrior (talk) 22:02, 29 June 2013 (UTC)

You may want to have a look here to get an idea of what we're looking for; he doesn't have to be Jay-Z to have an article, but we'll need a bit more than Twitter and Facebook. Take care. --Bongwarrior (talk) 18:01, 2 July 2013 (UTC)

TOMMY PIPES MCDONNELL

HI, i recently tried to get my name to have the hyperlink like the others redirecting to info about me. it was deleted by you. please direct me the correct protocol to progress with this. im new. thanks tommy — Preceding unsigned comment added by TOMMY PIPES MCDONNELL (talkcontribs) 08:47, 4 July 2013‎ (UTC)

Hi there, welcome. I deleted the redirect that you created because it pointed to an empty page, TOMMY PIPES MCDONNELL. I presume that you intended to point it to User:TOMMY PIPES MCDONNELL, but that also would have been deleted as a cross-namespace redirect.
It seems that you want to have an article about yourself on Misplaced Pages. Although it's not forbidden to write about yourself, it is strongly discouraged, and I would urge you to exercise caution. At a glance, it doesn't appear to me that you meet Misplaced Pages's notability requirements for musicians, but there is a slight chance that you do - it looks like you have performed with some notable musicians, so at the very least you aren't just some random nobody. Suitability for an article is ultimately decided by reliable sourcing - it is very easy to delete an article with very poor sourcing or no sourcing, and very hard to delete one with impeccable references. My best advice to you is the following:
1) Read WP:MUSIC, and try to judge as best you can whether or not an article about yourself is appropriate.
2) If you honestly think that you should have an article, gather as many good references as you can find (no Twitter, no Facebook, no YouTube, no blogs). If you have done any interviews with any newspapers or magazines, those are ideal.
3) List those references here.
Any further advice I can offer will be dependent on the references that you are able to provide. I wouldn't want to encourage you to create an article that has no chance of being retained - that's just a big waste of everybody's time. --Bongwarrior (talk) 21:45, 4 July 2013 (UTC)

CNN reporting. Also put that up on the talk page. We have it listed on the Death's page already as well. We believe the hoax was a hoax.Sunnydoo (talk) 14:00, 27 July 2013 (UTC)
Thanks, I have just removed the protection. --Bongwarrior (talk) 14:02, 27 July 2013 (UTC)
Appreciate it thank you. Several of our editors are watching it to see if anything will change. Will let you guys know something if it changes.Sunnydoo (talk) 14:06, 27 July 2013 (UTC)

Thank you!

I didn't understand who Nopole64 was or how they were able to block my account. Can any user throw a { block } tag on another user's Talk Page and block them? Newjerseyliz (talk) 18:49, 27 July 2013 (UTC)

Thankfully, no. Although anyone can place a block template, only admins can actually block a user. --Bongwarrior (talk) 19:01, 27 July 2013 (UTC)
I thought it was strange when he said, "I forgive you". Doesn't seem like something that an Admin would say! I appreciate you straightening it out. Just a little bit of drama for the morning. ;-) Newjerseyliz (talk) 19:11, 27 July 2013 (UTC)

RD coding

Hmm... that's odd. I'm quite certain I didn't introduce that line break there (as it, correctly, should not be there) and that I previewed before saving. Hmm. -- tariqabjotu 16:58, 11 August 2013 (UTC)

No problem, I'm pretty sure it was my fault. I think it had something to do with these two edits of mine. I've left a note at WT:ITN to see if someone can check it out. --Bongwarrior (talk) 17:10, 11 August 2013 (UTC)

Ryan Braun

You might want to take a look at the Ryan Braun page again ... its again attracting excessive IP vandalism. Best.--Epeefleche (talk) 06:32, 23 August 2013 (UTC)

Thank you, I'll keep an eye on it. It has been pretty quiet so far today, so I don't think it needs to be protected just yet. --Bongwarrior (talk) 20:33, 23 August 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for catching my slip!

Just saw that you fixed my slipup at Dungaree (fabric). I have no idea how I let that piece of vandalism back in, but I appreciate your removing it! DoorsAjar (talk) 03:09, 26 August 2013 (UTC)

You're welcome. I've certainly made a few slip-ups of my own, so don't even worry about it. --Bongwarrior (talk) 03:18, 26 August 2013 (UTC)

In case you need to be informed. Tbhotch. Grammatically incorrect? Correct it! See terms and conditions. 22:31, 7 September 2013 (UTC)

Friends

Would you be able to lower protection settings to "pending changes" while let the protection duration stay the same? --George Ho (talk) 05:25, 23 September 2013 (UTC)

Sure, I don't see a problem with that. --Bongwarrior (talk) 06:14, 23 September 2013 (UTC)

Recent block

Just my opinion, perhaps unnecessary, but I would suppress this user name, or at least hide the revision entries from the effected articles. What do you think? Thanks — MusikAnimal 18:27, 23 September 2013 (UTC)

No, that's not a bad idea. I don't know how to suppress them exactly (or even if I have that ability), but I've scrubbed them from the articles. --Bongwarrior (talk) 19:10, 23 September 2013 (UTC)
That'll do. Thanks again! — MusikAnimal 19:24, 23 September 2013 (UTC)

Thank you

Thanks for fixing house of Cosby. That page is like a sweet dream, or a beautiful nightmare. -Dan — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2600:1000:B001:86E4:3C6D:CBF1:F31B:C9F9 (talk) 20:47, 9 October 2013 (UTC)

Bitch

Shall this be "unprotected" or "pending changes"? --George Ho (talk) 01:35, 26 September 2013 (UTC)

Common swear words attract boatloads of vandalism, so I think it's better to leave this one semiprotected. --Bongwarrior (talk) 17:09, 26 September 2013 (UTC)

More indef. semi-protected pages

Al Capone is one of them; I see infrequency recently and seldom vandalism. Perhaps lower to "pending changes"? There are more at Category:Misplaced Pages indefinitely semi-protected pages. --George Ho (talk) 22:46, 26 September 2013 (UTC)

You don't see vandalism on that page because the semiprotection is preventing it. I was tempted to attempt unprotection here, and I probably can if you are absolutely insistent, but I'm fairly certain that it would be futile. I chose indefinite semiprotection in response to sustained and inordinate amounts of vandalism over a period of years, vandalism that had prompted several other administrators to protect the page before me. Because Capone is a historical figure, and still as popular as he ever was or ever will be, I doubt that anything has changed. --Bongwarrior (talk) 16:23, 27 September 2013 (UTC)
After some careful consideration, I think we can try pending changes as you've suggested. I would actually prefer to unprotect this, if it were possible; I try to avoid treating PC as a panacea, but it could work here and this might end up being a "glass half full" situation. --Bongwarrior (talk) 16:35, 27 September 2013 (UTC)

Check my AIV work

Hi Bongwarrior, I'm a new admin getting my feet wet at AIV. I blocked four accounts, User:189.241.187.65, User:Verbatim345, User:Uglypythan and User:64.75.117.129. As you're experienced at AIV, could you look through those actions and make sure I'm in line with the norm, in terms of lengths of blocks, checking for warnings for kinds of vandalism, and block notices left? Thanks if you have time! Zad68 16:15, 8 October 2013 (UTC)

Looks good to me. I usually block the anons for 31 hours instead of 24 so that they can't just show up tomorrow at the same Bat-time, same Bat-channel, but that's strictly a matter of preference. Take care and good luck. --Bongwarrior (talk) 16:27, 8 October 2013 (UTC)
Thanks! Zad68 17:53, 8 October 2013 (UTC)

AnonieBOT IV

AnonieBOT IV has proposed a new user name that does not appear to contravene policy. SInce you indicated this block was a "for name only" block, I've unblocked to allow him to file a name change. As always, please revert if you disagree. Kuru (talk) 00:02, 14 October 2013 (UTC)

Thanks, no objections here. --Bongwarrior (talk) 02:01, 14 October 2013 (UTC)

Mike the Headless Chicken

Thanks for the note - I have unprotected it. Brookie :) { - he's in the building somewhere!} 10:54, 14 October 2013 (UTC)

Sounds good, thank you. --Bongwarrior (talk) 16:24, 14 October 2013 (UTC)

A barnstar for you!

The Anti-Vandalism Barnstar
Good work. Things were getting out of hand ower there (the Jabberwocky‎-situation). One doesn't want people start reading that article and it is full of crazy stuff. Hafspajen (talk) 18:52, 1 October 2013 (UTC)
Thanks, happy to be of service. --Bongwarrior (talk) 19:01, 1 October 2013 (UTC)

User talk:204.229.220.1

Hi, sorry to bother you about this again. The persistent long time vandal has returned after a 3-month block, doing the same exact vandalizing again. History:

The IP has made many other vandal edits in other articles, these are the ones at Daniyal Mueenuddin. -- Green Cardamom (talk) 21:18, 15 October 2013 (UTC)

No bother at all - since the IP address appears to be somewhat stable, I've blocked it for a year and a half. --Bongwarrior (talk) 21:59, 15 October 2013 (UTC)

Channel Awesome

Heya, giving you a heads up that I just completed the merger of salvageable information from List of Channel Awesome shows to Channel Awesome (per the former page's AfD) that was disrupted by that IP-hopping vandal with an agenda against one of the subjects. I just threw up a soft redirect (I can't make it actually redirect right now for some reason), but your help in blocking the guy and protecting the pages was much appreciated. Thanks! Doc StrangeLogbook 21:17, 19 October 2013 (UTC)

Happy to help out - I think the protection template was borking the redirect, so I removed it. It seems to be working okay now. Take care. --Bongwarrior (talk) 21:30, 19 October 2013 (UTC)

IP vandal

Hey Bongmaster, can you fill me in on 87.93.91.82? I'm just trying to look out for my poor Swedish buddy. Drmies (talk) 20:45, 20 October 2013 (UTC)

Not a whole lot to tell - I don't think I've dealt with them before yesterday, although it's possible that I have. They seemed to be mostly using 188.67.xx.xxx and 87.93.xx.xxx addresses, concentrating most of their efforts on Timeline of Google Street View, and then moving on to Jfmantis' userpages, then mine. I don't think I noticed any problems elsewhere. If it should start up again, a range block might be useful, but I don't know how to do them. --Bongwarrior (talk) 21:54, 20 October 2013 (UTC)
An article that's worse than many K-pop articles. We REALLY need a list of when which streets were added, complete with flags for our readers in kindergarten? Drmies (talk) 01:56, 21 October 2013 (UTC)

Roman legion

Thanks. I hate it when I don't catch all the vandalism. But I was blocking the latest account and IP, someone else got the earlier account. Dougweller (talk) 18:34, 21 October 2013 (UTC)

No problemo. That's why they pay me the big money. --Bongwarrior (talk) 18:53, 21 October 2013 (UTC)

More cleanup

I see you cleaned some junk from User talk:Dr.K.. Would you please deal with the latest sock shown in the history. Johnuniq (talk) 10:45, 22 October 2013 (UTC)

It's already taken care of, I think, and I don't see anything there that really needs to be RevDeled. --Bongwarrior (talk) 19:57, 22 October 2013 (UTC)
