Confederate forces under the command of General ] entrenched around the village of Averasboro just north of ] in order to make a brief delaying defense against advancing Federal armies under teh command of Major General ]. Although it was not a heavily contested engagement it resulted in some 682 Union casualties and some 500 Confederate. More importantly it provided General ] time to rebuild the Army of Tennessee and prepare its final stand at the ]. Following these major battles, the Confederates fought a final withdrawing action in the town of Morrisville Station where they were forced in retreat toward ]. Following these battles in North Carolina General Johnston sent a courier to the Federal encampments at Morrisville with a message to Major General Sherman requesting a conference to discuss an armistice.
