Once Upon Ay Time In Mumbai Dobaara! (/ˌwʌns əpɒn eɪ taɪm ɪn mʊmˈbaɪ/ Hindustani pronunciation: [d̪o:ba:ra:]; "Once Upon A Time In Mumbai Again") (abbreviated OUATIMD, previously known as Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai Again) is a 2013 Indian gangster film directed by Milan Luthria and produced by Ekta Kapoor and Shobha Kapoor. A sequel to 2010's Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai, the film stars Akshay Kumar, Sonakshi Sinha and Imran Khan, with Sonali Bendre in a supporting role.

The first trailer of the film was released on 28 May 2013. The film released on 15 August, the eve of Independence Day in India. Its release date was pushed back by the producers to avoid clashing with Rohit Shetty's Chennai Express, which released on 9 August. This is the third collaboration between Akshay Kumar and Sonakshi Sinha (after the 2012 films Rowdy Rathore and Joker), and the first between Sinha and Imran Khan. The film received mixed to negative reviews and performed poorly at the box office, declared a "flop" by Box Office India.

Plot

The film begins where its predecessor ended, with Shoaib Khan (Akshay Kumar) the reigning don after assassinating his mentor, Sultan Mirza (Ajay Devgn), and earning respect. Twelve years later he is still the charismatic, suave womaniser who has extended his empire to the Mideast. Khan's only friends are Javed (Sarfaraz Khan), who oversees his illegal work; his former love Mumtaz (Sonali Bendre) and Aslam (Imran Khan), a teenager Khan met in a visit to the slums in which he grew up.

An older Khan returns to Mumbai to kill Rawal (Mahesh Manjrekar), who opposed Khan's ambition to take the reins in Mumbai. Although the city was his first love, rising starlet Jasmine (Sonakshi Sinha) wins his heart. Khan advances Jasmine's career by rigging awards, and showers her with gifts; she becomes obsessed with him. He sends Aslam and another trustworthy aide, Jimmy, to kill Rawal. Jimmy fails; Rawal flees after accidentally killing his girlfriend, Sonia. Jimmy is captured by the police, hot on Khan's trail after learning about his arrival in Bombay. Jimmy, loyal to Khan, does not crack during his interrogation and is freed due to lack of evidence. The police intend to draw Khan out from hiding; he has eluded them for 12 years, and this is their last chance to take him on Indian soil.

Khan, suspicious that Jimmy has become a police informer, decides to kill him but Aslam offers to do the deed to deflect police attention. He, Dedh Tang and several thugs masquerade as rival biker gangs and stage a brawl. Plainclothes police try to control the chaos when Aslam corners Jimmy. A police officer stops Aslam; Khan appears out of nowhere, murders Jimmy and injures the policeman. A chase ensues; the police fail to catch the two, who escape in Khan's Mercedes.

Khan and Aslam have befriended Jasmine and, although Khan has bought her a house, she rejects his advances. Angry and disappointed, Khan slaps her and tells her to leave the house. Still unsuccessful in wooing her, he interrupts her film shoots. Before Aslam can tell Jasmine he loves her she interrupts him, saying that her family has already arranged her marriage.

To avenge Khan, Rawal shoots Jasmine when Aslam drops her off at her home. After Aslam rushes her to the hospital, Khan tells Jasmine that they both love her. Although Aslam denies this, Khan asks him to pretend so Rawal can use Aslam as a pawn against him.

When Rawal calls Aslam at the hospital, Aslam reveals Khan's hideout after Rawal convinces him about his friend's true nature. When Rawal gets to Khan's house, Khan (who is lying in wait with a sniper rifle) kills Rawal and his henchmen.

Khan savors his victory (which consolidates his position), hoping to flee abroad before his capture by the police. On their way back, Dedh Tang mentions Aslam's affection for Jasmine; Khan, angry, decides to eliminate his rival. Jasmine asks Aslam to take her away from Khan; they flee on a motorbike, after Dedh Tang warns the lovers by honking his car horn. Khan kills Dedh Tang, sending his body to Aslam with Akbar (who badly injures Aslam). Aslam calls Khan, saying that he will not buckle and that he lives only for Jasmine. Khan arrives in Dongri, despite Javed's warnings, and confronts Aslam. Aslam does not defend himself against Khan's blows. Inspector Sawant appears, and fires at Khan. Aslam pushes Khan away, taking the bullets himself. A gun battle injures Khan and Sawant, and Javed drags Khan away. In the last scene, a bullet-ridden, dejected Khan reads a letter he was unable to give Jasmine in the cargo hold of a ship.

Filming

Oman is a stunning country with varied landscapes. We required a good mix of retro and contemporary for the part we wanted to shoot there, and Oman gave us a lot more. It has a lot to offer visually, which worked well for us as film-makers.

—Tanuj Garg (CEO of Balaji Motion Pictures), in an interview with Glamsham

There are so many beautiful locations across the globe but little did we know that a country of such stark yet stunning beauty is a neighboring country. We needed a location of pristine beauty in the Middle East, and Oman, a relatively virgin location, worked for us like a charm. It's a rich mix of sea, sand and mountains.

—Director Milan Lutharia, in an interview with Glamsham

Tanuj Garg, CEO of Balaji Motion Pictures, announced on Twitter that principal photography began on 27 August 2012 in Mumbai. Female lead Sonakshi Sinha joined the cast and crew two days later after completing her previous film, Son of Sardaar with Ajay Devgn. The overseas shooting schedule began in September in Oman, the first major Indian production filmed in the sultanate. Portions of the film were shot on a beach in Qantab, in Qurum on its Corniche, in its central business district and at the Shangri-La Barr Al Jissah Resort in Muscat. When director Milan Luthria became ill with a virus, shooting was postponed for three days. To make up the lost time Luthria persuaded Kumar to work on two consecutive Sundays, the first time in seven years that the actor worked on a Sunday (which he usually reserves for his family); he last worked on a Sunday on Priyadarshan's 2006 Bhagam Bhag. The remainder of the film was shot on location in Khala, on the Sassoon Docks and at Mukesh Mills in the Mumbai area to give the film a retro look. The shoot was wrapped up by January 2013.

Effects

The film's visual effects (VFX) were by Reliance MediaWorks, which also produced computer-generated imagery (CGI) for Balaji Motion Pictures and Luthria for its prequel, Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai (2010). Since the company was also generating VFX for the yet-unreleased Chennai Express (2013) its roster of animators and compositors was divided into two teams. The Once Upon Ay Time In Mumbai Dobaara! team consisted of 40 artists, who augmented 600 digital shots in one month. Luthria informed the company that Dobaara! was set during the 1980s, with car chases requiring visual effects. About 25 percent were shot against chroma key backgrounds, since they would have been difficult to film otherwise. Scenes in the Sharjah Cricket Association Stadium in theUnited Arab Emirates were recreated three-dimensionally with polygonal modeling in Autodesk Maya instead of the live-action plates used for shots in Muscat. Adobe Photoshop and ZBrush were used to add texture to matte paintings in the background and the 3D models. Outdoor shots in Mumbai (such as Colaba Causeway and Ballard Pier) were replaced by interior and exterior live-action plates from Oman. According to Sanjiv Naik, the film's VFX supervisor, the last few scenes were the most difficult ones to shoot. In the last scene Khan is lying, dejected and wounded, in the cargo hold of a ship; the camera zooms out to reveal the word Mumbai. The camera shot was actually 2,000 frames; the camera was pulled out only 30 feet in reality, and the VFX shot took 15 days to complete. Except for the interior shot of Kumar, the remaining shots were digital. The live action was filmed with RED and Arri's Alexa digital motion-picture camera.

Casting

Emraan Hashmi, who appeared in the original film, was initially chosen to play the lead role. However, Luthria was looking for an older actor and chose Kumar for the role of Shoaib Khan (based on Dawood Ibrahim). In February 2012 it was announced that there were two male leads in the film, the second said to be Shahid Kapoor. However, in March Imran Khan was confirmed as the second male lead. Many actresses were considered for the female lead (including Illeana D'Cruz, Kareena Kapoor, Kangna Ranaut, Asin Thottumkal, Sonam Kapoor and Deepika Padukone), but in April it was reported that Sonakshi Sinha had been cast. Sonali Bendre was also signed as a lead character in the film. The film marked Bendre's first role since Shankar Dada MBBS. In November 2012, it was announced that the film was scheduled for release on Eid 2013. TV actor Chetan Hansraj was signed as an antagonist in the film.

Promotion

Akshay Kumar along with Sonakshi Sinha visiting the Ajmer Sharif to pray for the success of the film.

Akshay Kumar will be playing the fictitious role of gangster Dawood Ibrahim. Kumar's character's look was revealed on a reality show on Aapka Colors. Kumar's entry on the show was supposed to be with music after a scene of the prequel, choreographed by the director, Milan Luthria himself followed by an action sequence. The scene during its execution suffered a minor glitch which was believed to be a failed attempt to sabotage Kumar's entry. As a result the shot was performed twice taking its toll on Kumar's already severe back pain which led to the cancelling of a subsequent event in which he was supposed to appear. It has also been reported that the film will feature an sequence with Kumar watching a cricket match as shown in a trailer released on 28 May 2013 but whether the match is between India and Pakistan at the Sharjah Cricket Association Stadium in the 1980s has not been confirmed. The trailer was launched in Mumbai, where much of the film's outdoor shoot took place. In order to promote the film, Akshay Kumar flew in from New York, where he was holidaying with his family to Birmingham to watch the India-Pakistan cricket match of 2013 ICC Champions Trophy on 15 June 2013 at the Edgbaston Cricket Ground. A second trailer of the film was released on 3 July 2013 which featured a narration by Akshay Kumar's character, Shoaib Khan and divulged further information about the film's plot such as the characters of Akshay Kumar and Imran Khan involved in a struggle for the love of Jasmine, portrayed in the film by Sonakshi Sinha. In the trailer it is revealed that Shoaib Khan is the lead as well as the main antagonist of the film. It also features some fight and action sequences between Shoaib Khan and Aslam (Imran Khan). Mohar Basu of Koimoi praised the second trailer, its background score along with the direction and action choreography and felt that the second trailer "is even better than the film's first trailer" in the respective aspects of filmmaking and leaves "an explosive impact on its audiences".

Ekta Kapoor, the producer of the film went a step ahead to promote the second trailer of the film by booking prime time (between 8 pm to 11 pm) slots on four television channels in order to air it, for a large sum of money. She also spent 20 million rupees to buy a slot in a leading channel to play a special episode related to the film. Askhay Kumar, Sonakshi Sinha and Imran Khan, the three main leads of the film also promoted the film at the popular reality show Comedy Nights with Kapil, hosted by stand-up comedian Kapil Sharma.

The three leading characters of the film, namely Akshay Kumar, Sonakshi Sinha and Imran Khan, the producer of the film Ekta Kapoor along with most other members of the cast and crew visited the Dargah Sharif, a shrine of Sufi Saint Moinuddin Chishti situated in Ajmer. It was visited on the morning of Monday 5 August in a bid to pray for the commercial success of the film and the well-being of the relatives of the members associated with the film respectively.

"A touch of appreciation is always held dearly in an actor's arms, even if it's from the simplest of people like our beloved spot boys. But to have your work spoken of so kindly by the world's most admired gangster Al Pacino himself – I had goose-bumps thinking about him watching the promo! I was so humbled, not only as an actor but as a fan of his legendary work. I pray he enjoys the final piece as much as he enjoyed the promo!."

—Akshay Kumar, Lead of the film.

"I'm walking around with a silly grin and you know why! The only actor's portrait in my cabin is of this God of Gangsters! An all-time legend and personal favorite. Thank you!"

—Milan Luthria, Director of the film.

Hollywood actor Al Pacino showed his appreciation for the film and stated that the promos and the posters have had him reminiscing about his Godfather times. Incidentally Pacino's business associate, Barry Navidi showed him the theatrical trailer where Akshay Kumar's appearance, who plays the role of a fictitious don in the film brought back memories and experiences from the 1972 film. Al Pacino portrayed the role of Michael Corleone, son of Vito Corleone (Marlon Brando).

Actor Rishi Kapoor who participated in the original version of the song in the film Amar Akbar Anthony gave his stamp of his approval after an impromptu meeting with Imran Khan in a dubbing session for the film gave the stamp of his approval for the performance of Khan as well as the song. The reason for Khan's concern was the approval of the watchers and the negative clout of comparisons between the older and newer versions.

The name of the film has been changed thrice. The production first started with the media referring it to as Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai 2. It had earlier been officially named Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai Again. Owing to the producer being a staunch believer of astrology and numerology, the film was renamed to Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai Dobara with the addition of "Dobara" (meaning again in Hindi) to the title. Later a 'y' and extra 'a' was added to the title thus making it Once Upon ay Time in Mumbai Dobaara!, the present title.

The film was promoted at the unveiling of the new line of LED televisions by manefacturer Arise who are entering the main foray with this line of TV's. The three main leads of the film, Akshay Kumar, Sonakshi Sinha and Imran Khan along with producer Ekta Kapoor were present at the do and event was marked with exchange of best wishes and congratulations.

Producer Ekta Kapoor who is known to have visited the Dargah Sharif and Balaji Shrine in South India to pray for the success of her films before their release, a Hindu by religion she observed fast during the important days of Ramazan in order to pray for the success of the film despite her hectic schedule and planned visits to the Mumbai's Mohamed Ali Road to celebrate iftaari and feed the needy there.

Controversies

Initially, Shah Rukh Khan starrer Chennai Express and Akshay Kumar starrer Once Upon Ay Time in Mumbai Dobaara! both have been abandoned by Pakistani distributors and exhibitors in the interest of four of their own films releasing on the same day; however, deals have now been finalised to release both films in Pakistan.

The prequel to the film, Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai, had storyline and characters that were similar to real-life underworld dons according to film critics. The same was speculated about the sequel with the visual appearance of the lead character being strikingly similar to Dawood Ibrahim along with several aspects of the film like glimpses of Shoaib's involvement in cricket matches shown in the first theatrical trailer comparable to Dawood's alleged strong hold in monopolisation of cricket matches. Shoaib Khan romancing a starlet, portrayed on-screen by Sonakshi Sinha also drew attention with Dawood's rumoured affair with 1980s mainstream-film actress Mandakini, more so with the real name of Mandakini being Yasmeen Joseph which had an uncanny resemblance to the original name of the character, Yasmin. Thus the name was later changed to Jasmine in-light of such controversies.

Answering to such speculations, the producer of the film, lead and director of the venture have time and again despised such allegations and remained firm on their statement that the film is entirely fictional thereby clearing the air of rumours.

The soundtrack of the film received mainly positive reviews from contemporary critics.

Rumnique Nannar of Bollyspice gave the soundtrack three and a half stars and opined, "the album succeeds in all respects, since it features a remake, a retro song, and two gems, and manages to fit with the film's tone and mood of the 80s".

Movie Talkies also gave the soundtrack three and a half stars and stated, "the soundtrack of OUATIMD is an excellent effort from Pritam and is sure to be lapped up by the audiences in much the same way as its predecessor. It sure might be a short album with just four songs in it but suffice to say, Quality wins over Quantity".

Writing for Bollywood Hungama, Rajiv Vijayakar analysed and reviewed each song on its own merit.

  • Ye Tune Kya Kiya – A Sufi song in its roots the reviewer praised Pritam, the Composer for adhering to deep melodies in parts thereby bridging the generation gap between the best of the melodious past and today's music and for handing it out more of a Sufi-Rock treatment. According to the reviewer it serves as a rightful successor to the Sufi song called Tumjo Aye Mere Zindagi Mein from the soundtrack of the prequel but this time its more intricately designed and pays a tribute to it by composing it in this Genre. He credits the play of strings in the interlude and phonetics in playing a major role in boosting the soulful content it carries with it.
  • Tayyab Ali – A modern adaption of song of same in the 1970s film, Amar Akbar Anthony by Pritam's assistant, Anupam Amod sets itself apart from the contemporary recreations in recreating the near-identical situation to the original song, and the imaginative contemporary tenor. He furthermore praised the smart addition of lyrics by Lyricist and writer of the film, Rajat Aroraa to the original irreverent chorus by Anand Bakshi, Pritam replicating the old orchestration only to a basic extent, keeping the choral patterns different too and avoided unnecessary comparison between the Mohammed Rafi and Javed Ali stating that would be unfair and odious.
  • Tu Hi Khwahish – A counterpart of Parda from the previous soundtrack which itself found its sources in two classics. The energetic, laced with intesenly romantical lyrics and richly acoustical in arrangements according to the reviewer is a hark back to such tracks from Prakash Mehra and Feroz Khan with Kalyanji-Anandji and orchestral nuances reminding us of R.D. Burman!. He concluded with stating it to be the finest track which in spite of some high-pitched vocals from Sunidhi Chauhan does not jar on the ears at even for a sole point of time.
  • Chugliyaan – The weakest link of the album he criticised it for being too calculated in melodies and lyrics and thereby got executed at the end as an average and orthodox track. He criticised it not for being bad but being the ad-infinitum grooves frequented by lesser skilled composers.

Jogider Tuteja writing for Rediff also reviewed each song individually –

  • Ye Tune Kya Kiya – He praises the lyrics which are appropriate to the core, Javed Bashir's vocals that "that gel well with the overall flow of the song", and the composer's deft ability to maintain the quintessential qawalli flavour throughout the entirety of the song.
  • Tayyab Ali – He heavily criticised the song's experimental and annoyingly placed English lyrics which foils the singer's earnest vocals.
  • Tu Hi Khwahish – He praises the song for setting the mood back after an upsetting "Tayyab Ali", a song that would make Asha Bhosle proud, particularly because of Sunidhi Chauhan's vocal rendition in the "antra"s.
  • Chugliyaan – He credits the final track, a sufi number as a "beautiful love song with a poetic feel to it" and an "impressive chorus". He compared Javed Ali's vocals to those of Sonu Nigam adding them be exceptionally well supported by Sahir Ali Bagga's vocals.

Bryan Durham writing for The Times of India reviewed the film, saying "brevity seems to be the soul of the Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai Dobaara soundtrack" –

  • Ye Tune Kya Kiya – "Javed Bashir's rugged voice gets aashiqana with the very traditional Ye Tune Kya Kiya." He points out the musical nod to Pee Loon weaved into the tune for the fans of the film.
  • Tayyab Ali – "Ali infuses the required balance of energy and restraint" on Javed Ali's contemporised version of the song which sets itself apart from the original in the lyrics section but roots leading to the original can be discovered instrumentally and thematically.
  • Tu Hi Khwahish – "nod to the item numbers of the 80s and 90s, like Parda Hai Parda was in OUATIM" on Sunidhi Chauhan's number where she tries to replicate Asha Bhosle in the ending by a harkat while at the same time "channelling a famous Helen number, but doesn't quite impress".
  • Chugliyaan – "fresh sound-wise but seems confused in what it's trying to achieve" on the song by Javed Ali.

He ended stating "Pritam's compositions here are competent but nowhere as memorable as what he accomplished with OUATIM."

Mohar Basu in her review of the soundtrack for Koimoi:

  • Ye Tune Kya Kiya – She credits Javed Bashir's voice the sole beauty of the song while saying the unusually high tempo, rash and rhyming-lacked lyrics lend a hand in the impact of the song being dull.
  • Tayyab Ali – She reviewed the song without comparing it to the original version. She praised the lyrics, Javed Ali's ecletic tone complete with humour. In her perception, remakes are results of lack of originality therefore she concluded saying "this track is lag for me".
  • Tu Hi Khwahish – She said it was a brilliant song with vigorous beats and catchy beats. "The retro cabaret beats comes across well in Sunidhi's sensuous voice" concluded by her.
  • Chugliyaan – She credits this song to have zero impact on first listen. She criticized the love ballad's flat instrumental arrangement which leads to a loss of appeal with repetition.

She said "Overall the OUATIMD album is just about alright. With such few songs to gauge from it is an average album with only 'Tu Hi Khawish' standing out in terms of lingering music. I am going with 2.5/5 for this album. Pritam and his singers can do much better than this. I was expecting the original OUATIM delight but in comparison this one turned out to be drab!"

Release

Once Upon Ay Time in Mumbai Dobaara released on 1300-1600 screens on India's 67th Independence Day. The screen release increased on 16 August, with a wider release in 2500-2700 screens in the country. The film had 100% occupancy in some cinemas on its first day.

Critical reception

Upon release, Once Upon Ay Time In Mumbai Dobaara! received mixed to negative reviews. Rajeev Masand writing for CNN-IBN gave the film stars and said "Once Upon Ay Time in Mumbai Dobaara is the equivalent of getting a root canal" criticising the naivety of the three main leads, Akshay Kumar and Imran Khan for their on-screen "in-your-face flamboyance", and acting as a "urban rich kid slumming it out at a dress-up party" respectively "rat-a-tat punch lines", praised Sonali Bendre's cameo as Mumtaz, the scene where Shoiab walks into a police station seemingly to surrender himself as "small mercies in a major misfire". Writing for The Times of India, Madhureeta Mukherjee awarded the film stars, telling readers to "Watch this story of deewana dons and their dilrubas. There's nothing criminal about it!" appraising Milan Luthria for capturing the essence and aroma of the period the film is set, Kumar's portrayal of Shoaib Khan with "bhai act with flamboyance and mojo... He gets a chance to do what he does best – herogiri (albeit less menacing, more entertaining), with charisma and clap-trap dialoguebaazi" criticizing Imran Khan's "ill-at-ease" rogue, the second half of the film being "at times too overbearing" and finally saying "this film has its moments, but it's not as compelling as the prequel." Subhra Gupta writing for The Indian Express gave the film stars saying "After all the shoot-outs and bang-bangs are over, you are left with a film which leaves you with so little new that you wonder if there's any juice left in this style of retro gangsta flick. Or are we heading for a third-time-in-Mumbai-Tibara?" heavily criticising Sonakshi Sinha's act as the "goody-two-shoes" heroine Jasmine who is "more naïve than any young woman has the right to be". Reviewing the film for Koimoi, Mohar Basu gave the title stars saying that "OUATIMD lacks the effervescence and naturalness of its prequel. The vibrancy of the script is diluted with hard-to-believe romance, minimal story; the film falters due to lack of action and the calamity that OUATIMD reflected in abundance. This one isn't really a dull bore but fails to spark off the enigma of the former edition! Crime thrillers and love dramas shouldn't be mingled, it results in an insipid broth like this" citing the overtness of melodrama in the film; its lack of euphoric stand-out moments in part because of the "lazy" script, claiming it falls apart when compared to its predecessor; the lack-lustred chemistry between the leads and the intended surprise for the audience when Sonakshi declares her lover whilst rejecting another; the existence of the plot's core theme of obsession over romance which seems out of the blue, considering there are "barely any tender moments or delicate minutes of love"; Kumar's sleazy dialogue delivery, outright hilarious at times for failing to add depth, charisma or persona in a role that "Emraan Hashmi had immortalized"; Sinha's character as a "chatterbox replete with idiocracy" and Khan "trying-too-hard-to-be-suave", the film further imposing the impression of his inherent inability to act as the lows of the film while the only highs being Bendre's compelling and convincing act in a single solid scene where she effortlessly conveys the emotional carnage Shoaib's love had caused her over the years; the action scenes in the first hour of the film, notably when both Kumar and Khan jump over a terrace together showing glimpses of the "panache of what it had attempted on". Vinayak Chakrovorty writing for India Today gave the film and said "OUATIMD should remind Bollywood what we all always knew: Never make a sequel just for the heck of it if you don't have a genuine idea to entertain". Anupama Chopra reviewing for The Hindustan Times gave the film and said "Once Upon Ay Time in Mumbaai Dobaara! had me cheering for the bad guy. Which, at least in the movies, is never a bad thing. The film gets one extra star for Akshay Kumar, who makes a stellar killer".

Box office

The film had a very good opening with 100% occupancy in theatres especially in Delhi, Mumbai, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Hyderabad owing to release on a national holiday on the eve of Independence Day. Due to the limited availability of screens (approximately 1000), Balaji Motion Pictures negotiated with the makers of Chennai Express to free up 1000 more screens on Friday to accommodate 2700 screens for Once Upon a Time in Mumbai Dobaara!. Despite a low number of screens, the film went on to earn ₹90 million (US$1.1 million) nett on its opening day. However, due to facing tough competition with Chennai Express, the film only managed to collect ₹366.40 million (US$4.3 million) (₹273 million (US$3.2 million) three-day) over its extended four-day weekend, which was considered a poor figure. Earnings dropped on Monday, collecting ₹40 million (US$470,000). The film managed to show growth on Tuesday and Wednesday due to Raksha Bandhan, collecting ₹85 million (US$990,000) on both days. The film collected ₹510.90 million (US$6.0 million) (₹485.40 million (US$5.7 million) seven-day) on its extended eight-day first week. On its second weekend, however, the film witnessed a huge drop of nearly 90%, collecting only ₹45 million (US$530,000) and bringing up its total to ₹555 million (US$6.5 million). The film collected ₹70 million (US$820,000) over its second week, bringing up its total to ₹580 million (US$6.8 million). Despite this, it was officially declared a "flop" by Box Office India. The film also did not perform well at overseas, collecting only $1.55 million on its first weekend.

Aftermath and Impact

Following the films receival of mostly negative reviews from critics Akshay Kumar lashed out at the critics considering them to be lacking the understanding of audiences as also basic ideas of filmmaking. There were also rumours regarding a tiff between the lead and the producer, Akshay Kumar and Ekta Kapoor the reason being Akshay distancing himself from the project, not promoting it enough to salvage the film from getting ruined which it eventually did. Also during the 2013 Indian Premier League the three leads of the film in order to promote the film went to see the inaugural IPL match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Daredevils, the organisers of the match asked their cameramen not to focus on the films team resulting the trio not getting any coverage throughout the match. After this event a disappointed Kumar requested Ekta Kapoor, the producer to re-arrange the films marketing schedule.
