Counting as WP:EXPERT if your own words are published in a reliable source?

So, if I say in a reliable source, that I have x number of years of experience with a very specific topic, and it is part of the text in an article of that reliable source on a very specific topic, can that be used to show I have some level of authority on that topic? In this case, it's me expressing the fact that I've had three seasons of dig experience at a site. The article is not written by me, it's written by a person working for that reliable source. This would be a source that would out me, of course. I hope what I'm asking is clear. If I gave more info, it would definitely out me. Sir William Matthew Flinders Petrie | 30 Kislev 5774 00:35, 3 December 2013 (UTC)

Misplaced Pages does not give any extra privileges based on expertise to editors, but your expertise is likely to show through on your talk page discussions because you will be able to find appropriate sources to support your statements, and your arguments are likely to be persuasive. (Of course, you might be restricted by the conflict of interest policy if the topic of an article is related to something you personally worked on, or have a financial interest in.)
You can use your own published works as sources. If you have been published in reliable sources in a certain topic area, your personal webpage might thereby become a reliable self-published source (which are acceptable, but not as desirable as publications by a publisher who is independent of the author). You should use care to be sure you are working to benefit the article, and not trying to attract attention to your own publications. Jc3s5h (talk) 00:51, 3 December 2013 (UTC)
Is it a conflict of interest by default though? If it's a company or a city you live in then I could see the concern, but if it's an archaeological site then it just means that, as you said, you can - and will be driven to - find good sources and understand what they're talking about better than people that haven't (at least without them having to do hours of work reading up on).
Oh it's nothing I published. More like I was interviewed by an editor of an RS publication and then he published the interview on the website of that RS. So it's like saying here would be credentials. Sir William Matthew Flinders Petrie | 30 Kislev 5774 01:39, 3 December 2013 (UTC)
User:Flinders Petrie - Your words in an interview are not independent of you so, even if they are published in a reliable source, the information may not be usable in a Misplaced Pages article. Of course, I'm not sure what you mean by "used to show I have some level of authority on that topic". Used where? Do you want to show the website published work to another Wikipedian to establish that you are an expert on the particular dig? Do you want to use the information in a Misplaced Pages article? -- Jreferee (talk) 05:49, 4 December 2013 (UTC)
Cool, I did not know you could highlight on Misplaced Pages. The former, to show that my opinion on things relating to that digsite maybe should have more weight (not like "No, I know better than you, etc, but more I'm pretty sure that's the case) and maybe a wee bit more weight when talking about archaeological digging methods (at least those used in Italy, Israel, and Jordan). For academic purposes, I may have to out myself soon anyway as I plan on doing some academic work on the same site that I've been editing and I'll probably need to acknowledge my work on that Wiki article just so I'm not put in awkward situation later. Sir William Matthew Flinders Petrie | 1 Tevet 5774 11:15, 4 December 2013 (UTC)
If I understand it correctly, your situation is one of the legitimate reasons for having multiple accounts. One account where you are "self outed" used to edit articles where you may have a COI, and your current non-outed account to be used for non-COI edits. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 14:12, 4 December 2013 (UTC)
Well I've done most of the work already. I'm not sure there's much of an COI, I am still a paying volunteer on the dig, I'm editing the article of my own volition, and it's hard not to maintain an NPOV on this. The self-outting isn't for you guys. It's in case anything I write in academic work starts to sound anything like the article. Self-plagiarism is frowned upon here. request edit

Hi! I represent the Issaquah History Museums (I am the marketing department) and was editing our organization's name in two articles in Misplaced Pages, "The Issaquah Historical Museums" and "The Issaquah Valley Trolley". It occurred to me that the IVT is a project of the IHM, and so should probably be a sub-page instead of its own separate article. How do I merge the articles? Thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Issaquah History Museums (talkcontribs)

You have a clear conflict of interest here, and should not be editing either article at all, except to correct clear-cut factual matters. In particular, your conflict of interest has led you to misjudge the relative importance of the two articles. The tramway is clearly notable, in Misplaced Pages's sense, and therefore an article about it is warranted. The notability of the organisation that operates it is doubtful. Maproom (talk) 09:07, 3 December 2013 (UTC)
Your username is also violating Misplaced Pages's rules: all accounts are personal, and should not have names that suggest an organisation: see WP:USERNAME. You should abandon that user name (which is likely to be blocked) and create a personal account (you are free to use a pseudonym: it does not have to be your real name if you don't wish to). --ColinFine (talk) 09:40, 3 December 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for your response. I'm not making content edits, our name was incorrectly posted by a high school student in 2009 doing an independent homework project. That's why I checked the edits as "minor edit" according to the rules. I fail to see the conflict of interest as the official organization and origin of the information misquoted in the original article. This is a factual edit. The only reason I am using the Issaquah History Museums profile is as an expert, official content source of Issaquah History Museums data in the course of my staff duties. What would be a better way of citing myself in my official capacity as a content expert? Or is there a completely different means when I am one of the authors of the webpage being cited as well?

My hope was that a Misplaced Pages expert could consider the merging question as the second article was also written by the same high school student (I believe) because it contains the same incorrect version of our organization's name. My Helpdesk message is titled "request edit" because I recognize that I cannot merge the articles myself. I mis-worded my intent as "how can I merge" when I meant "how can I request a review for a possible article merge". The trolley (not a tramway, that is incorrect as well) is one of about fifteen different small projects the IHM currently has; should we post all of them as individual articles? I had considered posting another one of these but upon re-reading Misplaced Pages's rules regarding what is defined as "notable", none of our projects independently meet the scope, including the trolley project- it's more like one of our facilities that also moves. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Issaquah History Museums (talkcontribs) 11:51, 3 December 2013 (UTC)

I see that the rename you requested has already been done, by Theroadislong. It would not need an expert to merge the two articles, I could do it myself. But I am not going to: I think it would be counterproductive to merge an interesting and well-referenced article into an article that lacks all references except one to its subject's own web site and is, therefore, a candidate for deletion.
You should not be "citing yourself". What Misplaced Pages values is citations of independent, reliable, published sources. The IVT article has those, and is therefore not in danger of being deleted. I don't doubt your credentials as someone well-informed on the issues covered in the articles, but that is not what counts here.
You have stated that you are the marketing department of Issaquah History Museums: this gives you a very clear conflict of interest when editing an article about Issaquah History Museums. No-one is likely to mind if you correct dates, spellings, etc. But if you want any changes that might be at all controversial, you should describe them on the talk page of the article, and let other, impartial, editors decide whether to make them. And you should take ColinFine's advice about your username. Maproom (talk) 12:37, 3 December 2013 (UTC)
As the marketing person don't you have a "press clippings" file of news and magazine articles about your organization? Such articles should be the main sources for the article - not stuff that you or your colleagues wrote. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 14:19, 4 December 2013 (UTC)

    Removal of article

    Dear Sir or Madam

I am seeking the removal of the following article link -

    South Ronaldsay child abuse scandal

This article is about me and my family and is causing me a great deal of distress. When my name is typed in to Google this link appears. It was a private court case many years ago and does not reflect my life today. How might I remove the article, or could Misplaced Pages please remove it? I ask that Misplaced Pages sympathise with my situation.

Thank you for your support. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Helen54321 (talkcontribs) 09:28, 3 December 2013 (UTC)

The article is South Ronaldsay child abuse scandal. It is about a notable subject which made headlines at the time, and will not be removed. However, I have removed what I guess to be your name from it, as I see no reason for you to be named there. Unless another editor reverts my deletion, Google should in a while notice the change, and stop listing the article when people search for your name. Maproom (talk) 09:50, 3 December 2013 (UTC)
IF this is not the issue, feel free to Email me, and I will act on it. This prevents anything staying public on-wiki. Thanks --Mdann52talk to me! 10:16, 3 December 2013 (UTC)

    restored truth about Alessandro Figus

    Extended content

Hi Several years ago some people wrote some word about me and create wikipedia Alessandro Figus I has been deleted and it is not a problem but when you deleted me you wrote a mountain of error on me and I would like to ask you to correct these errors. I like wikipedia , I use wikipedia, but I do not care particularly to be interested in Misplaced Pages, but I would like to restored the truth about me and about the Link Campus University. Link Campus University has been the branch of State University of Malta in Italy and in 2007 with the Mussi (Italian Minister of Education) decree (2007) has been the first foreign University in Italy. In November 2011 Link Campus University of Malta has become the Italian university and is now called Link Campus University. see www.unilink.it. I teach in this University since 2005!!!! see : http://www.fondazionecrui.it/tempus/Pagine/Uffici%20Tempus%20in%20Italia/default.aspx and see : www.unilink.it docenti and I published with Eurilink the University press some book http://libreriarizzoli.corriere.it/Sistema-Europa.-L-organizzazione-politica-dell-Unione-Europea/pjGsEWcVFCEAAAEtepprHJJ5/pc?CatalogCategoryID=4OasEWcWqqQAAAEpSH0fmqGA and, and, and.... at your disposal — Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.4.75.114 (talk) 15:56, 3 December 2013 (UTC)

    Deletion of article

Is there a page where you can nominate Wiki articles for deletion?MackyBeth (talk) 16:20, 3 December 2013 (UTC)

There are varying processes; what is the article and why do you feel it should be deleted? --Orange Mike | Talk 16:24, 3 December 2013 (UTC)
My guess is that the OP refers to Isle of the Cross. See Talk:Isle of the Cross and this question above. Maproom (talk) 16:32, 3 December 2013 (UTC)
That is indeed the article I wish removed. First, this title does not warrant an article of its own, since it is only a theory that such work existed and is now lost. Second, the item is badly sourced and filled with speculation, such as the remark on "Bartleby, the Scrivener." Third, it is only a stub, as Misplaced Pages users have marked it, and improvement is unlikely for lack of information to improve it with. So how do I proceed to have the Misplaced Pages community review and delete it?MackyBeth (talk) 17:13, 3 December 2013 (UTC)
Misplaced Pages:Deletion policy shows the different ways to suggest deletion. The important thing for Misplaced Pages is not whether a subject is real but whether there are sources to satisfy Misplaced Pages:Notability. In this case Misplaced Pages:Notability (books) is also relevant. A sufficient criteria there is "The book's author is so historically significant that any of his or her written works may be considered notable. This does not simply mean that the book's author is him/herself notable by Misplaced Pages's standards; rather, the book's author is of exceptional significance and the author's life and body of written work would be a common subject of academic study." The case of a lost/unconfirmed book is special so I don't know how a suggested deletion would be viewed. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:31, 4 December 2013 (UTC)
The article states in the first sentence that the book did exist, sourced to this , which is Hershel Parker arguing that it did exist. If he is the only one arguing this, the article should at least reflect that. If there is a scholary consensus that the book existed, it probably deserves an article (I base that on that even I have heard of Herman Melville). restore deleted article

Please restore the article on Tom Forsythe that is referenced below. I can't do it since I don't have the permission.

I recently tried to have a look at the article about me and my legal battle with Mattel and learned that it has been deleted since 2006. I'm not too self interested since it has taken me almost 8 years to figure out that the article has been removed but I still believe that the precedent set in my case creates important rights of free expression. And then, a lot has happened in my world since the 2004 Appeals Court decision. I was hoping to update the listing but I sure can't do that if it isn't there.

Keep in mind that Mattel made a point of suing Walking Mountain Productions, rather than me personally, to make it seem as though I was this big company, even though Walking Mountain was always just a dba for my own work.

The deletion log is shown below.

    00:47, 17 October 2006 Lucky 6.9 (talk | contribs) deleted page Tom Forsythe (content was: '{{db-nonsense}}'''Bold text'''''Italic text''Image:Example.jpgMedia:Example.ogg<math>Insert formula here</...')

I support Mr. Forsythe's plea. Google finds plenty of supporting material, such as this from the BBC. Maproom (talk) 16:37, 3 December 2013 (UTC)
As an administrator, and having checked the version that was deleted and its previous edits (all from within one minute in 2006), I can tell you both that there has never been anything worth reading at Tom Forsythe - just some gibberish characters as quoted in the deletion log. So there is nothing I can restore. There is no trace there of any article about a Tom/Thomas Forsyth(e) involved in a legal battle with Mattel. Thomas Forsythe has never had an article. Tom Forsyth and Thomas Forsyth are about other people. I see that there are links (redlinks) to Tom Forsythe in Fair use and Mattel v. MCA Records but that does not mean that there was ever an article about you. Bencherlite 16:40, 3 December 2013 (UTC)
Forsythe first received publicity for his Barbie photos in June 1999 and was sued by Mattel lawsuit around October 1, 2000. There is plenty of bio info on Forsythe, so there is no problem with starting an article on him. -- Jreferee (talk) 05:35, 4 December 2013 (UTC)

I know the article was there and that it was not gibberish. Could someone with better access than me take a closer look? Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 208.92.185.116 (talk) 17:01, 3 December 2013 (UTC)

Bencherlite is an admin and has admin level access. He also knows his way round Misplaced Pages, so if he can't find it, I doubt that anyone can.--ukexpat (talk) 17:15, 3 December 2013 (UTC)
Thank you, Ukexpat. For those of you who didn't believe me the first time, here is the entire deleted page history of Tom Forsythe:

That's it, folks. If the article you are thinking of ever existed, it was not at this location. Bencherlite 18:38, 3 December 2013 (UTC)
I'm also an admin with access to deleted articles and agree with Bencherlite. There hasn't been an article with real content at Tom Forsythe, and that title is the only deleted page starting with "Tom Forsy" or "Thomas Forsy". The gibberish page in the deletion log was created 17 October 2006 and deleted 3 minutes later. It's very common in Misplaced Pages to make red links to titles where there is no article but somebody might make an article in the future. See Misplaced Pages:Red link. The article Mattel v. MCA Records was created in 2009 as shown in the page history , and there was no article at Tom Forsythe at the time or ever since. I did find a page not edited since its 2004 creation at Misplaced Pages:School and university projects/Open Source Culture/Tom Forsythe. The page name starts with "Misplaced Pages:" (like this page "Misplaced Pages:Help desk"). That means it's in what we call the project namespace. It's not an article or a part of our encyclopedia and it isn't included in our search box by default. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:57, 3 December 2013 (UTC)

    Number 2 vs #2

According to the manual of style, which is the proper sentence?

    • His song peaked at #2 on the charts
    • His song peaked at number 2 on the charts

Thank you! teratogen (talk) 18:05, 3 December 2013 (UTC)

Don't use # in this way, per MOS:HASH. The second sentence accords with the MOS. Bencherlite 18:39, 3 December 2013 (UTC)
Leaving aside the #/number question: though not grammatically incorrect, the use of "on" here is not colloquial (British) English when referring to popular song charts: "in" would be more natural. One might use "on" in a different context, such as "His peak heart-rate episodes are shown on the charts." {The poster formerly known as 87.89.230.195} 212.95.237.92 (talk) 15:21, 4 December 2013 (UTC)

    Concern about donation

I was reading a wikipedia webpage, and noticed at the top of the page there was a link to donate to wikipedia. As it is poorly written, it makes me wonder whether it is legitimate.

This was the text "DEAR WIKIPEDIA READERS: We are the small non-profit that runs the #5 website in the world. We have only 175 staff but serve 500 million users, and have costs like any other top site: servers, power, programs, and staff. To protect our independence, we'll never run ads. We take no government funds. We survive on donations averaging about £10. Now is the time we ask. If everyone reading this gave £3, our fundraiser would be done within an hour. Misplaced Pages is something special. It is like a library or a public park. It is like a temple for the mind, a place we can all go to think and learn. If Misplaced Pages is useful to you, take one minute to keep it online and ad-free another year. Please help us forget fundraising and get back to Misplaced Pages. Thank you." — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.22.97.203 (talk) 20:23, 3 December 2013 (UTC)

That sounds like the valid message but I don't have it currently. The important thing is not what a donation message says (anyone can copy a real message when making a fake), but where it goes. It should go to somewhere at https://donate.wikimedia.org like the "Donate to Misplaced Pages" link at the left of every page. PrimeHunter (talk) 20:46, 3 December 2013 (UTC)

Is it supposed to be showing right now? Because when I view the main page logged-out, it shows up for a split second before disappearing. - Purplewowies (talk) 00:02, 4 December 2013 (UTC)
In my experience the donation banners are sometimes there and sometimes not. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:22, 4 December 2013 (UTC)
Same here. I was mostly concerned with the split second show up-disappear act, because I wasn't sure if that's normal... - Purplewowies (talk) 01:47, 4 December 2013 (UTC)
I just created a user to see if the ad would disappear, and it did upon login. It almost screams user info, and not money. Wiki can't, and shouldn't ever die (it'd be sad, especially for our young ones). But this seems to be a gimmick. If not, I will donate Wiki, please find a better way to ask for it. - Poois69 (talk)

Open accusation of being a Sock Puppet

Hi, A user User:Giano has leveled an accusation of myself being a sockpuppet for another account. I checked, and there is a formal procedure to be applied, to determine if someone is a Sock Puppet ]. I am asking that Giano be asked to either 1) Place my account up for that process with whatever evidence he has to prove it. or 2) Strike or remove his accusation.

I don't like the open accusation being plainly visible for all to see, as it belittles any contributions I will make to Misplaced Pages in the future. I think it also violates Misplaced Pages:Please do not bite the newcomers.

Thanks LilOwens (talk) 22:06, 3 December 2013 (UTC)

I notice that you don't deny being a sockpuppet, but anyhow, this isn't the place to complain about other users. You should probably bring it up with them personally on their talk page, or if you'd prefer, you could address the comment on the Administrator's Noticeboard, in the thread where the alleged accusation occurred, since that's where the Administrators lurk, and those are the folks who could conceivably help you. There was a page on "Avient Limited" which has disappeared. The logo of this company is now being incorrectly sited as "Avient Aviation" which is a different company altogether. Avient Limited is in liquidation so that might be why it has gone but we aviation enthusiasts like to keep a history of these minor airlines as it shows how our favorite aircraft progress through their various lives. Is it possible to get the Avient Limited page reinstated - or if I create it again from scratch will it be removed again? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.0.254.198 (talk) 23:15, 3 December 2013 (UTC)

As far as I can determine, there was never an article of that name. What other might it have been under? --Orange Mike | Talk 23:58, 3 December 2013 (UTC)
Are you sure that it was titled Avient Limited? I can't find any record of that article existing. Either way though, it was likely deleted as not being notable enough for an entry. See WP:CORP for our notability criteria for businesses. Dismas| 23:52, 3 December 2013 (UTC)
No page starting with "Avient" has been deleted. Special:PrefixIndex/Avient shows redirects to Avient Aviation from Avient Aviation Ltd and Avient Ltd. They have never been anything other than the redirect. I'm also unable to find the logo you mention. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:19, 4 December 2013 (UTC)

    Cameroon

In Cameroon#History, it says (2nd paragraph) "Portuguese sailors reached the coast in 100000000000000 B.C.", but the edit part has it as "in 1472." The article history also doesn't show it in the most recent version. Is someting missing in history? Smarkflea (talk) 01:08, 4 December 2013 (UTC)

The history shows the vandalism was reverted the next minute. Articles sometimes have to be purged to display the most recent version. The problem disappeared when I purged it. PrimeHunter (talk) 01:20, 4 December 2013 (UTC)

Thank you. How did you purge it? Smarkflea (talk) 01:37, 4 December 2013 (UTC)

My link on "purged" shows different ways to do it although my way isn't actually listed there. I have enabled Add a "Purge" tab to the top of the page, which purges the page's cache when followed at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-gadgets. PrimeHunter (talk) 01:50, 4 December 2013 (UTC)
Or, probably the quickest way is to append ?action=purge to the URL to purge that page. ~HueSatLum 03:55, 4 December 2013 (UTC)

How to permanently remove a deleted page

    Hello,

I had created a page last week at this link Tony Hsu Due to some reasons it was deleted. I would now like to permanently remove it from wiki, so that no users searching for 'Tony Hsu' gets directed to this page

    Please advise

Regards Ranjeeta — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ranjeeta7 (talkcontribs) 09:16, 4 December 2013 (UTC)

The page has been removed. However, it can take several days, even weeks, for search engines such as Google to catch up with that fact. Once they do, it will no longer appear in their search results. Yunshui  10:34, 4 December 2013 (UTC)

A product that has not yet entered production is unlikely to meet Misplaced Pages's inclusion requirements, which require substantial coverage in multiple, reliable, independent sources. What is the product that you wish to write about? Yunshui  10:33, 4 December 2013 (UTC)

What are the numbers in brackets on submissions page

I have an article in submission process.

What do the brackets with numbers in represent after the (diff|history) brackets

    See example below:

    15:39, 26 November 2013 (diff | hist) . . (-9)‎ . . m Misplaced Pages talk:Articles for creation/xxxxxx — Preceding unsigned comment added by Anstutim (talkcontribs)

That represents how much content was added or removed. "-9" means that nine characters (including spaces) were removed, as you can see here. Equally, you have one that is "+604", which means 604 characters were added, here. — Richard BB 13:08, 4 December 2013 (UTC)
To add to this, it's an overall change in characters, so if I added 10 characters but removed 5 elsewhere in the arrticle it would still show up as +5. Samwalton9 (talk) 13:10, 4 December 2013 (UTC)
Are you sure it's counting characters rather than bytes? I've always thought it was the change in page size in bytes. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 14:23, 4 December 2013 (UTC)
Yes, it is bytes, see Misplaced Pages:Added or removed characters. - David Biddulph (talk) 14:28, 4 December 2013 (UTC)
So it is, my bad, I assumed it was characters since it usually is! Samwalton9 (talk) 11:13, 5 December 2013 (UTC)

Create a WP:REDIRECT titled John Bennett (murder victim) and add a {{DEFAULTSORT}} template and the category to the page. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 17:04, 4 December 2013 (UTC)

To support an article, there would have to be high-quality published sources giving information about you -- book reviews in national publications, biographical pieces, interviews, etc. Beyond that, it would be much easier to give a concrete answer if you would let us know who you are. content "ping-pong" on article "FTI Consulting"

I almost never contribute to wikipedia. When, about a month ago, I read elsewhere about activity of FTI Consulting, I checked the wikipedia page to learn more about this company. The page turned out to be a kind of PR promotional press release. I didn't feel qualified to perform any comprehensive research to make the article less one-sided, so I added a section and paragraph paraphrasing the content (with footnote attribution) of a newspaper article implicating the company in incitement to violent criminal activity in Venezuela with the goal of destabilizing the government there. I did do some googling of the company and did see some other supplemental information about the company, but decided to start slowly - maybe others more qualified than I would pick up the job.

Like I said, I thought this would begin to incrementally balance out the tone of the wikipedia article, but what has been happening is that someone is just deleting my additions.

If the wikipedia staff feel that my additions are inappropriate, so be it; however, if the additions are appropriate, I would appreciate some way to to put a quasi-'lock' in the content. FTI Consulting isn't my life. I have limited motivation to check back and re-edit the page in a game of wikipedia ping-pong. If the other side are paid PR guns of that corporation, I will certainly lose.

Some reasons in favor of the content: 1] makes article less of a one-sided PR press release 2] potential investors and business partners and clients would want to know the nature of the company before getting involved with them 3] public interest to potential victims and bystanders — Preceding unsigned comment added by 47.21.4.242 (talk) 17:54, 4 December 2013 (UTC)

The place to start a discussion is Talk:FTI Consulting. - David Biddulph (talk) 17:59, 4 December 2013 (UTC)
Interestingly, the IP which has been reverting you (65.118.222.116) does apparently belong to FTI Consulting, so they would seem to have a conflict of interest. - David Biddulph (talk) 18:03, 4 December 2013 (UTC)
Irrelevant to the issue, but just to help you understand things here. What you call "ping-pong" is not unusual, and is known as an "edit war". The side that can support its claims with references, as you have done, generally "wins". And we are all "Misplaced Pages staff", or rather, editors – David Biddulph, me, you, and even 65.118.222.116, despite his conflict of interest. Maproom (talk) 22:35, 4 December 2013 (UTC)
to continue the not quite on topic, be aware that just because you have sources, it does not give you the right to keep reverting see WP:3RR. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 23:17, 4 December 2013 (UTC)

Where should I place Earthquakes in 2014 in Requested Articles? 78.156.109.166 (talk) 19:49, 4 December 2013 (UTC)

because we do not have crystal balls that tell us anything about earthquakes that have not yet happened, such a request will not be appropriate until reliable sources have written enough about earthquakes to merit a stand alone article. When the reporting has occurred, the place to request the article will be WP:AFC. or actually, as an IP Misplaced Pages:Requested articles would be the path that would probably work best.-- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 20:43, 4 December 2013 (UTC)
Actually, TRPoD, the IP knows about Requested Articles, and was asking which section to put it in. The answer is surely Misplaced Pages:Requested articles/Natural sciences/Environment and geology, but TRPoD is right about waiting until there is reference material available for such an article. --ColinFine (talk) 23:38, 4 December 2013 (UTC)

    Main Title

How can you update the main title of a wikipedia page? I need to update a page's name but I don't know how to. Please help. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ravensrock222 (talkcontribs) 23:21, 4 December 2013 (UTC)

You do that by moving the page. If you click on the small grey arrow just to the left of the search bar at the top of the page, click "move" and enter the new title in the box. ~HueSatLum 23:28, 4 December 2013 (UTC)
But please make sure that the new name conforms to Misplaced Pages:Article titles. If you're wanting to move it because there was a spelling error, or an organisation has changed its name, that's fine; but if you want to move it because you think the article should use a different form of their name, check the policy I linked to, and probably discuss the move on the article's talk page too, to reach consensus before moving it. --ColinFine (talk) 23:44, 4 December 2013 (UTC)

Multiple authors in short footnote parenthesis coding

So, I'm trying to properly cite the multiple authors to one work. I'm not sure what's going wrong here. Compare Note #19 to #16 or any other one properly formatted. How should I be doing the in-line footnote cites for coding? Sir William Matthew Flinders Petrie | 2 Tevet 5774 02:28, 5 December 2013 (UTC) Edit: Also, multiple works by the same authors in the same year, please. Sir William Matthew Flinders Petrie | 2 Tevet 5774 03:01, 5 December 2013 (UTC)

I've made an edit to User:Flinders Petrie/Tel Kabri to fix some of the errors. Some of your footnote calls were missing "p=" or "pp=", and the citations needed "ref=harv" to make them act as targets for the links. The script User:Gadget850/HarvErrors.js is good for drawing attention to these kinds of error.
To make multiple authors work, you have to list them in the citation templates using the last1/first1/last2/first2... parameters, not in the unformatted "coauthors" parameter; and then list the surnames in the footnote call: {{sfnp|Smith|Jones|Bloggs|2009|pp=19-39}}.
For multiple works in a single year see Template:Sfnp#More than one work in a year. -- John of Reading (talk) 08:04, 5 December 2013 (UTC)

    list of Florida Islands

Hi. I'm new to editing. Added three islands to list of Florida Islands giving reference as The Jacksonville Beach Historical Society. I had planned to add more to the list as there are many to add. I am unsure what I did wrong as within minutes the page was reverted without any explanation given. Is the reference insufficient? Should I have cited maps? I followed the same format. thank you, JamieIames (talk) 09:33, 5 December 2013 (UTC)

You added an unnamed 37-mile barrier island, without a valid reference. You did add a reference, but it was to a society, not to a published work. And your reference was not visible in the list, because List of islands of Florida currently has no {{reflist}}. You also accidentally added your Misplaced Pages signature to the end of the mention of Boot Island. Maproom (talk) 13:28, 5 December 2013 (UTC)

Thanks, got ya. So, are islands to be listed without references on this page? If want to add the unnamed island should a ref list feature be added to page or is that messing with intent of page? Use a published map to reference islands if referencing required? Yep, don't know what I did to put name on Boot Island. Thanks again, JamieIames (talk) 19:49, 5 December 2013 (UTC)

I think that intention of the list is for it to be like a disambiguation page, or a list of "notable citizens" at the end of an article about a city: it should only list islands that are notable enough that Misplaced Pages already has an article about them, so no reference is needed. But some over-enthusiastic editors had already added "redlinked" islands to it, with their names in double-square-brackets but no corresponding articles about those islands.
If you believe that the 37-mile barrier island ought to be listed on the page, it is rather different from wanting to add a small non-notable island. I assume that there is some question about whether it really constitutes an island. I would consider adding it to the article with a footnote justifying its "island" status (enclosed in <ref> tags like a citation, but leading to a footnote rather than to an external source), or discussing it on the article's talk page before doing anything. Article about a controversial topic

    Dear editors:

While checking through the old G13 eligible submissions from 2012 at Afc, I found the following: Misplaced Pages talk:Articles for creation/Sudhir Gopi. It looked as though it just needed a little more referenced info to be accepted, so I did a search and found this, this and this. Well, the subject and his company certainly have been written about now. My question is, should I let this article be deleted, or add this information and submit it to Afc? —Anne Delong (talk) 13:02, 5 December 2013 (UTC)

I would added the references, and some statements of what they say, and leave it to others to decide on creation. Maproom (talk) 13:57, 5 December 2013 (UTC)
Anne, feel free to be WP:Bold. If you think a G13 eligible AfC submission should be moved to article space, then just do it. Moving it to article space mean that it will have been edited in six months, so G13 no longer applies (also, I don't think there is policy against do in this). I would just add the information and move the page to article space if I thought the topic met WP:N. -- Jreferee (talk) 15:41, 5 December 2013 (UTC)
Yes, I understand how Afc works, and I've moved many articles into mainspace from Afc. My question was more about the notability of a subject who was not considered sufficiently notable before his company was discredited and he was deported. Does that make him more or less notable? It rather discredits some of the information in the older sources. —Anne Delong (talk) 15:58, 5 December 2013 (UTC)

Help with creating an article, it's been rejected four times.

Good morning...I am in need of some assistance and understanding. I was directed to seek help here.

My colleagues and I have submitted an article for review 4 times now, rejected each time. The most recent feedback is suggested that "The references do not adequately evidence the subject's notability" and that we have not "used reliable sources, such as mainstream press publications." When in fact that's all we have is magazine, newspaper and similar references. We have 18 references, all from bona fide, independent places. The feedback is saying that it's not verifiable, which I can't understand.

Well, I am not sure how we can impact this. Because as they say, the references are what they are. We can't change them. This isn't a matter of word-smithing at this point. It's a matter of they just don't think our sources are credible.

Here is the article and feedback in question: Misplaced Pages talk:Articles for creation/New Heights Educational Group, Inc Resource and Literacy Center

Please provide us guidance. Ideally, I'd love to actually talk to someone about this on the phone, so I can dialogue and ask questions. But, an email response at minimum would be great.

Thank you for your consideration. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.171.206.174 (talk) 13:20, 5 December 2013 (UTC)

The article needs reliable independent references that establish its subject's notablity. It currently has 19 references. I checked the first five of these. The first four confirm that it exists, but not that it is notable. The fifth (to the organisation's own domain, which is not independent) gave a 404, casting doubt on its continuing existence. I did not bother to check the rest. If there are references in there somewhere that do confirm the organisation's notability, I suggest you keep these and delete the rest. That way, editors will be more easily able to find the ones that matter. Maproom (talk) 13:49, 5 December 2013 (UTC)
"We have 18 references, all from bona fide, independent places." Really? References 5, 7, and 8 are from newheightseducation.org. How is newheightseducation.org independent from New Heights Educational Group? How many times have you been told that you need to write the article from Misplaced Pages reliable sources? Yet, the standard you want to apply is "bona fide" and "think our sources are credible." You link to websites without concern as to whether they meet Misplaced Pages Reliable Source standards. If you limit your sources to print newspaper, books, and magazines, you will avoid many of the issues you now are facing. The Journal Gazette has some source material. http://nl.newsbank.com/nl-search/we/Archives?p_multi=JG%7C&p_product=JGNP&p_theme=jgnp&p_action=search&p_maxdocs=200&s_dispstring="New%20Heights%20Educational%20Group"&p_field_advanced-0=&p_text_advanced-0=("New%20Heights%20Educational%20Group")&xcal_numdocs=20&p_perpage=10&p_sort=YMD_date:D&xcal_useweights=no as does the Dayton Business Journal and The Toledo Blade. The organization has been around since 2006, but the news reports only start as of 2012. Why was there no independent reliable source coverage for the organization first six years? The services subsection needs to be removed. The history section is on the right track. The prose describing the awards should be part of the history section. Get rid of that New Heights Educational Group: Summary table and instead use Template:Infobox non-profit. Your lead need not have any references (see WP:LEAD). Your references should be put in Template:Citation. The poor formatted footnotes makes it difficult for reviewers to consider your request and hides whether the source is reliable or not. -- Jreferee (talk) 15:30, 5 December 2013 (UTC)

    Dear Help Desk:

I'm Dr. Lewis' attorney and am assiting her in editing her Misplaced Pages page. Im trying to contact Sighola2 who appears to be doing most of the editing of her page and who changed the recent edits Dr. Lewis wanted made on the page.

How do I go about doing that?

Cynthia W. Sheppard — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cynthia W. Sheppard (talkcontribs) 17:40, 5 December 2013 (UTC)

Your starting point is to read Misplaced Pages's guidance on editing where there is a conflict of interest. After that the place to comment on changes is the article's talk page. - David Biddulph (talk) 17:52, 5 December 2013 (UTC)
@Cynthia W. Sheppard: You appear to have found the article's edit history, since you identified Sighola2 as a contributor. Next to Sighola2's name (and all editors' names) is a "Talk" link. Click that and you will be taken to the user's talk page. That said, please note that the article about Dorothy Otnow Lewis does not belong to Dorothy Otnow Lewis, it belongs to the Misplaced Pages community. So any edit Lewis "wanted" made can legitimately be changed by another user, provided that the user is editing according to our basic expectations of neutrality, the use of reliable independent sources and the exclusion of original research. I'd like to reinforce Cyphoidbomb's post by pointing out that Dorothy Otnow Lewis has no rights at all with respect to controlling the content of the article. Using a forum as a "Reliable" Source

My understanding is that citing a forum as a credible source is not allowed on Misplaced Pages. In multiple (multiple) attempts to address this on K&N Engineering, Inc.‎

Using the “Talk” page – reaching out to “editors” – “Edit”ing the page & including my reasoning – Even leaving a Criticism section/sentence but adding – And when that didn't work I added the

This section's factual accuracy is disputed. Relevant discussion may be found on the talk page. Please help to ensure that disputed statements are reliably sourced. (Learn how and when to remove this message)

    - I have been met with hostility and resistance from a couple of individuals.

I am now being told a Third Opinion (3O) has weighed in & the Forum citation is okay – so I best accept this.

When only a few weeks earlier a Third Opinion weighed in & said that Forums are NOT okay – better to list the reference until a legitimate source could be listed.

Based on the Misplaced Pages Rules/Guidelines it says: "Self-published sources (online and paper) Shortcuts: WP:USERGENERATED WP:USERG WP:UGC Main page: WP:SPS Anyone can create a personal web page or publish their own book, and also claim to be an expert in a certain field. For that reason self-published media—whether books, newsletters, personal websites, open wikis, blogs, personal pages on social networking sites, Internet forum postings, or tweets—are largely not acceptable. This includes any website whose content is largely user-generated, including the Internet Movie Database (IMDB), CBDB.com, collaboratively created websites such as wikis, and so forth, with the exception of material on such sites that is labeled as originating from credentialed members of the sites' editorial staff, rather than users. "Blogs" in this context refers to personal and group blogs. Some news outlets host interactive columns they call blogs, and these may be acceptable as sources so long as the writers are professional journalists or are professionals in the field on which they write and the blog is subject to the news outlet's full editorial control. Posts left by readers may never be used as sources; see WP:NEWSBLOG. Self-published material may sometimes be acceptable when its author is an established expert whose work in the relevant field has been published by reliable third-party publications. Self-published information should never be used as a source about a living person, even if the author is a well-known professional researcher or writer; see WP:BLP#Reliable sources."

I would be really grateful for some assistance with this situation. Thank you.

The best place to ask about this might be Misplaced Pages:Reliable sources/Noticeboard. However, looking at the article, it seems to me that there is a more fundamental problem - the source is being cited for something it doesn't say. I've left a comment about this at Talk:K&N Engineering, Inc. AndyTheGrump (talk) 19:10, 5 December 2013 (UTC)

I added some markup above so your comment displays properly.
I have also removed your edit from the article because you did not actually supply a reliable source that supports the content
You can find out more information about citations and how the citation mark ups work at WP:CITE. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 19:41, 5 December 2013 (UTC)
More specifically, your edit introduces some of the markup "ref tags", which come in pairs, an open ref tag and a close ref tag. In between the ref tags, you will need to include the information about your source (at minimum, a url to a reliably published source, but preferably all the citation information possible: Author, Title, Publisher, Publish date etc.) However, you had not included anything between the tags and so the markup reader sensed that and gave you the warning. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 19:47, 5 December 2013 (UTC)

The company I work with owns the trademarked name "Max Muscle" we would like the article that Misplaced Pages pulls to be about our company rather then the article that is currently existing on this link. When/If the article you have submitted is approved, then some form of the disambiguation options may be applied. Donation error

    Hello,

This might not be the correct forum for this issue but I couldn't find another one. Anyway, I tried donating $50 to wikipedia and it said the transaction could not be processed. I tried 3 more times and got the same result. However, I just went on my online bank account and it lists all of these attempts as "pending debits". I don't know if they will be rejected at the other end, but at any rate I only want to make the original donations and I would like all the subsequent ones to be canceled. Who should I contact about this?

A charge may show up on your card, held by your bank, as this is standard operating procedure for any online transaction. Your bank will release these funds in about 3-5 business days, depending upon their rules and regulations. Publication in Company News Magazine, 1966

I am working on a biography to be posted in the Misplaced Pages in the near future. In this biography, I would like to refer a published company news magazine article dated Dec 1966. Is it ok to attach the article in .pdf as a part of reference in the biography? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Morahim (talkcontribs) 07:06, 6 December 2013 (UTC)

while there may be a way, doing so would be a violation of copyright and it would be removed. Neither the verifiability policy nor the guidelines on reliable sources require on-line accessibility of sources, merely the appropriate citations. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 07:42, 6 December 2013 (UTC)
When you cite that source, be sure to include as much information as possible - the author or the article, the title, the name of the publisher, the name of the magazine, the date of publication and the place of publication if possible. Also be sure to use an inline citation so that the readers can see what information the magazine article is supporting. That's the best you can do. One day the copyright holder may put the news magazine issues on line, and if that happens a link can be added. —Anne Delong (talk) 07:56, 6 December 2013 (UTC)
Two more things to consider are if this is an internal company magazine, it may not meet the criteria as a reliably published source as such productions have as their primary purpose promoting the company and not facts. And if the subject of the article is/was an employee of the company, the magazine will not be suitable for establishing the notability of the subject since the publication and the subject are not independent of each other. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 14:07, 6 December 2013 (UTC)

I'm writing this to you to complain about deletion of this article. Poramadulla Central College We created that article about a school, and of course it's funded by government. @152.121.18.253: Having looked at few examples of "...is openly gay", I'd say that there are many instances where the phrase "openly gay" probably doesn't belong in the article's lead sentence any more than Marilyn Monroe's hair color or bust measurement would belong in her lead sentence. However, if the person's sexuality received media attention, or if the person achieved some notoriety for being the first openly gay US President, (for example), that might be worthy of note, in the same way that we note Valentina Tereshkova was the first woman in space. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 18:50, 6 December 2013 (UTC)
being "openly heterosexual" is rarely, if ever, an important aspect of someones importance, notability or public reaction/reception. being "openly gay" can frequently be an important aspect, although it is likely only in fairly rare occasions to be important enough to be mentioned in the lead. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 18:59, 6 December 2013 (UTC)
