T B = H + 2 B + 2 3 B + 3 H R {\displaystyle TB=H+2B+2\cdot 3B+3\cdot HR}

In baseball statistics, total bases refers to the number of bases a player has gained with hits, i.e. the sum of his/her hits weighted by 1 for a single, 2 for a double, 3 for a triple and 4 for a home run.

Only bases from safe hits count toward this total. Total bases can be calculated from commonly used baseball statistics by using the formula T B = H + 2 B + 2 x 3 B + 3 x H R {\displaystyle TB=H+2B+2x3B+3xHR} . Alternatively, and less frequently, statisticians may use the formula T B = 1 B + 2 x 2 B + 3 x 3 B + 4 x H R {\displaystyle TB=1B+2x2B+3x3B+4xHR} .
