Nothing Else Matters is probably Metallica's best known ballad. It appears on the self-titled "black album" .

James Hetfield initially wrote it to a girlfriend he once had, but now he can't remember why. He wasn't going to publish it, but once Lars Ulrich heard him playing it and wanted it on the Black Album. Now they consider it a song dedicated to all Metallica's fans.

Its orchestration was made by Michael Kamen conducting the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra. A live version is found on the album S&M.
