Electromyography

Electromyography is a technique for recording muscle and nerve activity. It uses an instrument called an electromyogram (EMG), which detects the electrical currents generated by muscle cells when these cells contract. An electromyograph uses needle electrodes inserted into the muscle tissue, which be somewhat painful to the patient.

Electromyography is used to find causes of muscule weakness, paralysis, involuntary twitching, and abnormal levels of muscle enzymes. It is used to help diagnose neuromuscular disorders such as MND, neuropathy, nerve damage and muscle damage.

Electromyography is also used in biofeedback studies and training. Electromyography training is a kind of biofeedback in which patients learn to control muscle tension in the face, neck, and shoulders. For example, such training is sometimes given to migraine patiets.
