JSTOR Survey (and an update)

Hi! Just a quick update that while JSTOR and The Misplaced Pages Library discuss expanding the partnership, they've gone ahead and extended the pilot access again, until May 31st. Thanks, JSTOR!

It would be really helpful for growing the program if you would fill out this short survey about your usage and experience with JSTOR:

Recent sock accounts

I think you missed one of the accounts you were blocking earlier: I love creating accounts (don't want to link). Cheers. EvergreenFir (talk) 00:24, 7 April 2014 (UTC)

Thanks, done.  —SMALLJIM  15:16, 7 April 2014 (UTC)

tooth extraction

not sure if I messed something up. I've got tooth extraction in the article Dental implant and saw it was red. Thought I'd missed something and created the redirect page - not sure what your plan was but I did this before seeing the deletion log. Ian Furst (talk) 03:57, 9 April 2014 (UTC)

No it's my fault. I dealt with User:Lesion's deletion request without giving it the attention it needed - in particular failing to notice that the request had already been turned down. I apologise for the inconvenience. If you're reading this, Lesion, you need to start a WP:RM process as explained by the message you removed – it's obviously not an uncontroversial change.  —SMALLJIM  09:00, 9 April 2014 (UTC)
I've got no concerns about the deletion (I also believe it's uncontroversial, just a house-keeping item, Lesion and I do a lot of the work on dental articles), I was just concerned I'd overridden something beyond my WP skill-set. I can change the link in the article or leave it as a REDIRECT. Doesn't matter to me. Ian Furst (talk) 10:27, 9 April 2014 (UTC)
Ah, ok. In that case since I have no opinion on the matter, we're just left with Courcelles' refusal of Lesion's first request: "Speedy deletion declined. This might be contentious enough to use WP:RM protocols." Since there's no rush, if you jointly decide you do want the move it's best if one of you does a WP:RM just to be sure. Best,  —SMALLJIM  10:47, 9 April 2014 (UTC)

I note with some amusement that tooth extraction is yet again not deleted. Where is this contention? Also, Smalljim, I resent the implication that I am trying to hide something by deleting a message on my user page which is clearly marked as inactive. I left a msg on Courcelles' talk page, which went unanswered, presumably because of lack of availability, although other admins (Kww) are clearly not above ignoring summons. Apparently they feel they are too important and their decisions are above any questioning from the community. Fair enough, as if we needed any more evidence that most admins are just on a power trip and log on here only to get their fix of bullying in compensation for a dissatisfaction with their place and position in the real world. Hence I nominated the redirect page again. In absence of any objection, I fail to see why the redirect is not deleted. Lesion 19:29, 9 April 2014 (UTC)

I could explain fully, but you give me the impression that I would be wasting my time. Instead I'll just say that if you don't want to go to an RM, just nominate it again. Refer to this discussion and any others, and hopefully the third admin will do the right thing :)  —SMALLJIM  20:04, 9 April 2014 (UTC)

Northern Blossoms Honey was deleted

Yes I'm new to Wiki but I believe I have some knowledge of early beekeeping in Saskatchewan, Canada. My grandfather came here in 1910 & was instrumental in founding the Saskatchewan Beekeepers Association, The Saskatchewan Honey Coop & the Saskatchewan Honey Marketing Board. Many imigrants to SK were familiar with beekeeping one or 2 hives in their homeland, however SK offered opportunity for great yields of honey, if one could survive winters of -45 C. I would welcome the opportunity to work on this article. Could you send back the article with the objectional material in red or deleted? Rob 198.167.167.254 (talk) 05:56, 10 April 2014 (UTC)

You're referring to History of "Northern Blossoms" Honey which I deleted, on request, on 30 March. There were two reasons for the deletion: firstly it was copied directly from http://www.hamiltonhoney.ca/history.html, which makes it a potential copyright violation. There is a process to go through to have such material accepted (but that wouldn't be relevant now). Secondly, there was no indication that the subject of the article was notable enough for inclusion here. There's a third issue, too: if you are involved with the company in some way, you must carefully consider our policy on conflict of interest. It's always best if someone who is completely uninvolved writes our articles about companies etc.
However, having said all that, there is potential for the addition of some general information about beekeeping in Canada: I see that we already have articles on Beekeeping in the United States as well as in some other countries: see Category:Beekeeping by country. If you want to write about this, you'll first need to assemble some reference material from reliable sources. The best way to start would be with our guide "Your first article". It used to be easy to write for Misplaced Pages and have your articles 'stick' - these days it's not so easy, I'm afraid. Let me know if I can help further.  —SMALLJIM  22:51, 10 April 2014 (UTC)
Or, for something simpler, you could add a general sentence or two to Saskatchewan#Economy, along the lines of what's in Alberta#Agriculture and forestry. But you'd still need to reference it properly if you want to be sure it'll stick.  —SMALLJIM  23:11, 10 April 2014 (UTC)

50.240.235.141

Hey Smalljim, 50.240.235.141 is at it again with the addition of non-existent Category:Television series created by Doug Langdale here. And the re-submission of blocks of unsourced content in spite of your push to start the article from scratch here. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 18:34, 14 April 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for the note. I've given a three month block. I don't think anything he's added can be trusted, so I'll revert the lot.  —SMALLJIM  18:55, 14 April 2014 (UTC)

Unapproved bot

Hello Smalljim, I am messaging you because of a situation that needs attention and I see that you are active. User:Pyfisch, who has made very few edits, seems to be testing a bot, User:FischBot, which has caused incorrect category changes. The user has reverted the changes, so we can AGF, but I can find no record of a bot approval request. Can I ask you to look into it? Since I did not know what forum the issue should be reported to for a speedy reply, please forgive me taking the liberty of asking you personally. Thank you, BethNaught (talk) 18:28, 17 April 2014 (UTC)

BethNaught - a quick learning curve there! I've read up on it and put a message on his talk page.  —SMALLJIM  18:47, 17 April 2014 (UTC)
Many thanks. I appreciate the time you put into it. BethNaught (talk) 18:51, 17 April 2014 (UTC)

ASSERT

Hey Smalljim, I tried to PING you, but not sure if it worked as the first time I used all uppercase and it didn't link you. I fixed it, but not sure if that actually notified you or just fixed the hyperlink. So this is just a notification in case the ping failed. I took your suggestion and just made the change, since I felt that most in the discussion thought the proposed text was better. But we do have some contested points that I'd like to get your input on if you can spare the time. Thanks Morphh 01:49, 18 April 2014 (UTC)

OK. I've replied briefly over there.  —SMALLJIM  12:51, 18 April 2014 (UTC)

Deletion of article on First Attorney Consultants, Ltd.

Hi Smalljim, After noticing your deletion of my article on April 21, 2014, I edited the article yesterday to add content explaining significance. The edited article is not showing up, and I am not sure if that is because it was deleted again or because of normal delays in processing approval of articles. Any help in resolving this would be greatly appreciated.

Joefacl (talk) 15:12, 24 April 2014 (UTC) Thank you, JoeFacl

Joe, setting aside the reasons for the second deletion of the article (as First attorney consultants) for a moment, the important question you should be considering is why you want there to be an article on this company on Misplaced Pages. Your username suggests a relationship with the company, so I've put our standard message about conflict of interest on your talk page. Regarding the article, you've done the right thing by requesting its undeletion.
If that undeletion request is unsuccessful and if, after carefully considering all the aspects, you really think that you should write an article on this company for Misplaced Pages, then I'd suggest that you submit it via the Articles for Creation process. However, there are plenty of other useful things you can do here if you want to help. For instance you could have a look at Category:Law firms of the United States and see if you could improve any of the existing articles there. Hope this helps,  —SMALLJIM  16:10, 24 April 2014 (UTC)

Create an Article with a Unconstructive filter

Hi SmallJim, I have written an article on a notable actor, on completion that article could not save page. I have written for a removal unconstructive so I can complete my page. The article code is 52, is there any way you can unfiltered the person name of my article ??!! It would mostly grateful, if we could work together. Maz132 (talk) 09:04, 26 April 2014 (UTC)

If you really want to help Misplaced Pages I suggest you do something else. Why not have a look at Category:Actor stubs and see if you can improve any of the existing articles there?  —SMALLJIM  09:35, 26 April 2014 (UTC)

It's kind of you, but I think you should make some useful edits to the encyclopedia to show that you're here in good faith before I can accept this barnstar.  —SMALLJIM  17:27, 27 April 2014 (UTC)

Disruptive Editing...

I am very interested in the popular music genre pages on Misplaced Pages, but have recently noticed some disruption. Two editors were recently banned - Pulum34 and Andrewbf for making (very similar) unsourced edits and refusal to communicate, but a third editor, also making very similar edits (I have compared the edit histories of the three) is now causing similar problems. I do not know if they are all one and the same editor, but the pages concentrated on and types of edit made are strikingly similar. The latest editor is called Laratadelaciudad. I have tried to communicate with him/her on the relevant Talk page, but the editor blanked the page after my first attempt. I have tried again, so far with no response. Some of the edits seem OK, but the ones made to, for instance, the Acid House page, are not I believe within Misplaced Pages guidelines. I would say the same about many others. I hate to contact you about this, but I think Misplaced Pages is a very special resource, very much "The People's Encyclopedia", and disruption like this does it no good at all. I would be grateful if you could look into the matter. Thank you.

UPDATE: I have now had some communication from the editor Laratadelaciudad and a positive discussion may be underway. I would be glad if you would monitor the situation if you have the time.

(86.131.95.227 (talk) 00:18, 28 April 2014 (UTC))

Thanks for your help here, I'm pleased that you managed to extract a response from this editor, whether it's the same person or not (he/she seems to be more communicative than the others). I'll keep an eye on this, and feel free to alert me to any similar egregious examples you come across.  —SMALLJIM  09:48, 28 April 2014 (UTC)

Thanks

I think this was a good application of IAR to the principal that one does not change another editor's post. Thanks for the correction. The editor who uses the pseudonym "JamesBWatson" (talk) 16:52, 30 April 2014 (UTC)

I'm glad you spotted it. I did waver for a while, but plumped for not bothering you with it since it seemed to fit IAR perfectly.  —SMALLJIM  17:00, 30 April 2014 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) I actually remember the first time I ever saw a colour television. It was Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In. Does that date me, or what? — Preceding unsigned comment added by JamesBWatson (talkcontribs) 21:30, 1 May 2014 (UTC)

"Veeery interesting... but shtupid" – how did you know it was a colour TV?  —SMALLJIM  21:49, 1 May 2014 (UTC)
I had always thought that part of the humour was that, while many of the cast did totally crazy things, Rowan & Martin were presented as a pair of very conventional men, conservatively dressed in grey suits somewhat dead-pan in their presentation, in a way rather like a pair of straight men to set off against the rest of the cast's craziness (even though no one could really call Dicky Martin a "straight man"). All of a sudden I found that their suits were in fact bright green and red, and then in the next scene bright yellow and blue, and so on. Suddenly, the whole character of the humour changed. Later, when I went back to seeing it at home, on my family's black & white set, it kept the new, zanier type of humour for me, even though I could no longer see the thing which was responsible for defining the humour in that way. The editor who uses the pseudonym "JamesBWatson" (talk) 10:08, 2 May 2014 (UTC)
Nah - those suits would have been the result of NTSC :) I probably never saw it in colour, and I really only have vague memories of the show, such as that German behind the potted palms and those little doors that they all kept popping out of – though I can't even be sure I'm not remembering seeing later excerpts. I suppose there are extracts on YouTube: I wonder how its American humour holds up today compared to Python. Or Round the Horne.  —SMALLJIM  23:19, 2 May 2014 (UTC)
