Misplaced Pages:Surveillance awareness day

You were supportive of the idea that Jehochman proposed: "A message is most effective when it matches the format of the media. We're an encyclopedia. On Feb 11, I suggest we fill our front page with articles, blurbs and news about mass spying and privacy. That will send a strong message, and help educate people. It's sort of like what we do on April 1, except serious instead of foolish."

Since this proposal received so much support, I and several others have done our best to begin the process of implementation. That said, the proposal is very controversial with Main Page insiders who have, understandably, objections that boil down to WP:NOTADVOCATE.

It's valuable to have feedback from people who oppose any deviation from the status quo, but we really need feedback from people who understood Jehochman idea, supported it, and could tell us whether we're succeeding in "implementing the vision" that Jehochman laid out and how to improve the proposal.

If you have the time, would you lend your view over at Misplaced Pages:Surveillance awareness day. If you want to see a list of custom content that could be available, we have a Arbitrary mockup #2, that shows lots of proposed content on one page.

Looking at the Honest Tea article history, I noticed an edit war that occurred between August 19, 2013 and August 22, 2013 between MrOllie and Bethesda36. Expanding Honest Kids sounds good to me, then! As for the edit war, there's really nothing to do at this point. Usually when there's an active edit war going on, you'd want to follow the instructions here, which could involve warning the users, or reporting them to the edit warring noticeboard depending on the circumstances. Since that edit war took place months ago though, there's nothing to do - blocks are to prevent disruption and encourage change, not to punish. ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 20:07, 2 February 2014 (UTC)

Hi! People listed in articles should meet our notability guidelines. Basically, people need to be both significant and have been covered in multiple, secondary sources. Unfortunately being a high school swimmer by itself would not be enough to meet the notability guidelines. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask. Thanks for the heads up. I'll be sure, in the future, to follow the guidelines you linked to. They were very helpful. I didn't realize that alumni had to be notable on a scale larger than those viewing the page; the people that were listed as alumni were very notable in their community and the regional area. Reverted change

I think that there is a problem with citing Clarke as a source.

Perhaps my edit was premature. However, he is apparently retired from the US government / NSA and in no position to know what they knew. At least, as far as Misplaced Pages reflects.

Therefore, if my edit is not acceptable, I think he should not be mentioned at all. I didn't delete information, I added it. He is being cited as an authority, while the (Misplaced Pages) record shows him to be not in a position to know.

If I made minor transgressions against the terms of service, it was not my intention. I stated fact (as far as I know it).

I don't yet have a Misplaced Pages account but I have used WP for years. Perhaps sometime I will create an account.

Hey there! The reason why I reverted your edit is that we don't refer back to Misplaced Pages for information. This is referred to as circular referencing. We go by what reliable, third-party sources say (see Misplaced Pages:Reliable sources and Misplaced Pages:Verifiability), not what our own articles say - it wouldn't make much sense to refer to ourselves as our own source of information!

As for the issue involving Clarke, reading the cited Reuters article reveals that Clarke was apparently part of "a five-member advisory panel convened to review electronic surveillance policy", which is why he was able to comment on the NSA's involvement with Heartbleed. It may be worth clarifying this in the article(s). I'm about to head to bed, so I can't look more into this at the moment, I made a clarification of this fact in the Heartbleed article. Based on the article you have provided, I still think Clarke should not be cited as an authoritive source for the Heartbleed article. From what I gather this former Bush advisor apparently said some things to Obama's administration. I'm not even going to deal with Snowden in this comment. It's not my intention to split hairs. But seriously, Clarke's claim that the NSA "did not know" doesn't carry weight to me because he was apparently inactive/retired/"not in the know" of NSA activities during the timeframe of March 2012 - April 2014.

I like open source software and support it in principle. However, delving into (and understanding millions/billions of lines of) code is not something most people do. I don't blame Obama nor Bush for an OpenSSL vulnerability that came to be by some (allegedly lone) developer. Certainly, Bush was not President during the time this vulnerability was in the wild. Nonetheless, I haven't seen evidence that Clarke was in a position to know what the NSA (nor KGB, nor MOSSAD, etc) was up to. Consequentially, I feel it is inappropriate to consider his claim as evidence that the NSA did not know. Again, in light of the present fact that Misplaced Pages does not show him to be in a position to know. Although the reasoning is a tad circular, I similarly take my own grandparents' opinions on "cybersecurity" with a grain of salt. In other words,

Hey again - I understand where you're coming from, but I disagree. In my opinion, he does have the proper authority - he's got a big background with government surveillance, and was selected to be part of a panel to analyze the NSA's activity. Even if Clarke himself is not worth mentioning on his own, the result of the five-member panel's investigation is worth mentioning in the article. But what I say is moot with regards to what the sources say. It's not up to editors to decide whether or not he's got the proper authority in this situation. Multiple reliable sources in addition to the Reuters article (including ABC, NPR, and The Guardian, to name a few) considers Clarke's position and stance on the NSA to be relevant. Certainly what Clarke says is relevant and should be in the Heartbleed article, but "authoritative"? Clarke's viewpoint should be included in the neutral point of view, summarized and cited just like other sources on the same issue, but not more. Hi @Troylangman: The reason why I (and another editor) reverted your addition was that Misplaced Pages articles should contain content that is significant. Content should be backed by reliable third party sources, which provide both verification and establish the significance of the subject you're writing about. In your case, if you wish to write about the music video in the Johnny Appleseed article, you'd need to find a few sources discussing the music video and its relevance to Johnny Appleseed.

As enjoyable as the linked Youtube video was, it is not significant, especially since it was just released. Imagine if every YouTube video created was mentioned in Misplaced Pages articles...that'd be a mess. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask. G'day, I am very new to Misplaced Pages, and still trying to work out how to use it, so appreciate your advice : )

Certainly I would not want to add any content to Johnny Appleseed's page lightly, as he is a hugely important historical figure.

I felt that as the Cannabis issue is such a huge one now, and also that the particular uTube video was professionally produced and had a good message that it was worthy of including.

My role is as CEO of the first Cannabis Medicine company in Australia, hence my interest tascann.com.au

If in time it becomes more prominent (as the video is currently very new) can we consider including on the page?

If the video ever becomes prominent enough and receives media coverage, then yes, it can be considered. Until then, though, I recommend you take a look at some of the fundamentals of Misplaced Pages editing. I've left a welcome message on your talk page with some useful links to check out. Also, seeing that you work in the Cannabis industry, I recommend you take a look at Misplaced Pages:Conflict of interest. Let's say there was a fish. Perhaps his name might be, oh I don't know...FREDDIE? Now let's say this fish lives in a post-apocylyptic world where fish, cars, and foxes can talk. Now let's imagine that this apocalypse was brought upon by none only than SAM. PAJAMA SAM, that is. Let's say he failed to bring peace to the world of the food and they launched an all out war on humanity. All that's left is cars, fish, and foxes. Now let's furthermore assume that this history were to be documented by, hmm I don't know, a GAME company maybe called Humongous Entertainment (from here on out referred to as He, which works out considering we also refer to God as He, so they are one and the same). He documents this history in a series of games aimed at the young minds of our current population, seeking to save their innocent souls before inevitable destruction. Hmmm, yes that would be interesting, interesting indeed. He would have created a world and brought life to it, and then told the story to young children of a new civilization. Hi Rares992 - the files you've been uploading all seem to be taken from various sources online, which are copyrighted. For the most part, Misplaced Pages's files need to be freely licensed. Non-free (copyrighted) images of living people are not permissible. See Misplaced Pages:Non-free content for more information. Hello. Thanks for reverting the WDAF-TV logo back to the one I had uploaded. I wrote on Dobrate's wall to ask why he thinks that it needs to be that one. I had told him that WDAF-TV's website and social media pages both use the "Fox 4 News" logo and not the "Fox 4 WDAF" logo that he had uploaded. Hi there - people listed under the notable alumni section of high schools should meet Misplaced Pages's standards for notability, and should ideally have their own article. If not, the person should be cited with a reliable source stating that the person is an alumni of that particular school, to keep things verifiable.
