The social stigma of obesity has created negative psychosocial impacts and has caused disadvantages for overweight and obese people. The social stigma often spans one's entire life, starting from a young age and lasting into adulthood. Several studies from the United States along with studies from the University of Marburg and University of Leipzig have shown that some people consider obese people as weak-willed, lazy, and less intelligent compared to their thinner counterparts which they may well be.
Adulthood
Overweight and obese people marry less often, have fewer educational and employment opportunities, and on average earn a lesser income than thin people.
