| A young woman is found murdered in the community of Sparta, Mississippi. Members of the city council become concerned that the police department does not have the skill to solve the murder, and want to also make the department more racially diverse. At the same time, Virgil Tibbs (]) is in town attending his mother's funeral, so it is decided to approach him about accepting a job as chief of detectives on the city's police force. | |||
