==Plot Summary==

Sonny Mims (Smith) is a local businessman and close friend of Bill Gillespie. He is also having an affair with Pauline Slade - who is a distant cousin of his. This affair soon leads to the murder of the wealthy man's wife.


Virgil Tibbs immediately suspects Mims and Slade in the murder. The chief however refuses at first to believe that Mims could be guilty of murder, and angrily tells Tibbs to leave him alone. In the end, Gillespie realizes that his friend has committed a murder. Gillespie apologizes to Tibbs, saying that Tibbs was right and that he was wrong.
