A friend of Officer Wilson Sweet dies in the jail of a neighboring county. The sheriff of this county, Sheriff Thompson, is an old friend of Bill Gillespie. Soon Sweet and others begin to suspect something is seriously admiss, especially when Thompson shoots a ] while hunting with Gillespie. | |||
Fustrated with the pace of the investigation, Sweet goes and has himself arrested by this sheriff's department. Virgil Tibbs, upon realizing that Sweet is missing, fears that Sweet may have gotten into serious trouble with Thompson and his department. Gillespie and several of his officers go to the sheriff's office with a court order to take charge of the jail, to find a badly beaten Sweet lying in a jail cell. | |||
When Gillespie goes to confront Thompson, it soon becomes evident that Thompson is seriously disturbed. Thompson has to be restrained by his men to keep from harming himself. Gillespie tells the deputies to get the next senior officer in to take over. Unable to watch matters further, Gillespie leaves the room, with Thompson begging him not to leave. | |||
