Latest AWB version

You have the latest version of AWB? OccultZone (TalkContributionsLog) 11:27, 25 June 2014 (UTC)

@OccultZone: I try to keep up with the latest SVN version - see Misplaced Pages:AutoWikiBrowser/Sources. GoingBatty (talk) 01:46, 26 June 2014 (UTC)
This module works for you? OccultZone (TalkContributionsLog) 01:52, 26 June 2014 (UTC)
@OccultZone: Yes - see this edit. Be sure you're not loading the <source>...</source> tag into AWB - just the contents in between. GoingBatty (talk) 01:58, 26 June 2014 (UTC)
So simple, thanks! OccultZone (TalkContributionsLog) 02:04, 26 June 2014 (UTC)
  • You know that this module is probably as perfect as the TPL/Wikiproject module of Magioladitis, which is used by number of bots. I had made over thousand of edits with the module of Ohconfucius, mistaken only once. Module supports the guidelines that has been provided on Misplaced Pages:Overlinking. 10 edits+ a minute were common, but I am sure that it should be done on purpose. You know any active bots who work on removing the redundant links? Or we need one. OccultZone (TalkContributionsLog) 04:11, 28 June 2014 (UTC)
    • The Misplaced Pages linking culture has moved a long way, but links being so context-dependent and such a lifeblood for us here, I don't think it's ever likely for there to be consensus for blanket removal of certain links across the 'pedia. I'm forever fine-tuning my script to find links that can be removed in specific contexts (such as when a common linked term is adjacent to another less common linked term), and there may be potential for a bot in such cases. -- Ohc  05:00, 28 June 2014 (UTC)
    • PS. I've fixed the bug with the spurious close parenthesis. -- Ohc  05:03, 28 June 2014 (UTC)
As there is potential and these edits are obviously non-controversial. A bot can be tried. @Ohconfucius:, going through the archives, that was your opinion in 2010, but afterwards, a number of bots have performed the tasks of removing links. Shall we propose on WT:Manual of Style/Linking? This proposal has failed. Didn't knew about it until today. OccultZone (TalkContributionsLog) 04:54, 8 July 2014 (UTC)
Aside from linked dates, I'm not aware of any other systematic and wholesale removal of links by bot. Usually, such removals would tend to be very specific instances or defined by specific contexts and limited in scope. We might be able to create a very stripped down version (or a very limited and specific contextual unlinking module) working within certain carefully selected categories so that it would meet the expectation of BAG as being entirely uncontroversial. Not inconceivable, but that would need a lot of work and discussion. -- Ohc  06:22, 8 July 2014 (UTC)
PS, the Proposal to allow links once per section hasn't formally failed yet, but the proposer refuses to accept it is dead to all intents an purposes. -- Ohc  06:26, 8 July 2014 (UTC)

Pagename

I've experimented with the auto-substituting template in the past and it ended up making a huge mess. Can I have someone use a bot to replace the pagename template later when I'm done? Abyssal (talk) 17:40, 1 July 2014 (UTC)

@Abyssal: I made a mess on Acredale Formation when I used {{subst:pagename}}, and found that {{subst:PAGENAME}} works just fine. Could you please try using this on one of the new articles that you're creating? If it works, could you please use it on all new articles (and we'll try to have a bot clean up the existing articles)? If it doesn't work for you, could you please let me know, and we can try to see how to resolve the issue? Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 17:48, 1 July 2014 (UTC)
The difference is that {{pagename}} is a template, but Template:Wikivar is a variable, part of the MediaWiki software. Some templates may be substituted, but {{pagename}} is not one of them; it also adds the page to Category:Pages which use a template in place of a magic word. Most variables may be substituted, and Template:Wikivar is one of them - provided that there is no pipe character after the word PAGENAME. That is, both {{subst:PAGENAME}} and {{subst:PAGENAME:Foo}} are OK, but {{subst:PAGENAME|Foo}} is not. --Redrose64 (talk) 19:36, 1 July 2014 (UTC)
@Abyssal: See Misplaced Pages:Bots/Requests for approval/BattyBot 32 and Misplaced Pages talk:AutoWikiBrowser/Feature requests#Pages which use a template in place of a magic word. GoingBatty (talk) 04:06, 2 July 2014 (UTC)
Bot trial approved, please post results on the bot request page. — xaosflux 04:14, 2 July 2014 (UTC)
Bot approved, please see notes on the request. — xaosflux 13:42, 2 July 2014 (UTC)
@Xaosflux: Thanks so much for the speedy approval. Looks like Magioladitis not only made an adjustment to AWB to facilitate this change but also fixed the articles created by Abyssal. Thanks everyone! GoingBatty (talk) 22:01, 2 July 2014 (UTC)
Yes, I 've been silently doing this task for a long time now. It's of course better to have more bots/editors taking care of it. The bot request was a good motive to adjust the AWB's settings instead of having my own settings all this time. -- Magioladitis (talk) 04:41, 3 July 2014 (UTC)
@Magioladitis: Do you know what needs to be changed on Template:Element color to get it out of Category:Pages which use a template in place of a magic word? Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 02:51, 4 July 2014 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) It might be this bit in the documentation subpage.

<includeonly>{{#ifeq:{{SUBPAGENAME|sandbox||
]
]

This code doesn't seem to work right; see the stray "ifeq sandbox" code at the bottom of the documentation. Hope that helps. – Jonesey95 (talk) 04:41, 4 July 2014 (UTC)

@Jonesey95: That did it! Silly me was looking at the code in Template:Element color and not the code in Template:Element color/doc. Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 04:48, 4 July 2014 (UTC)
@Jonesey95 and GoingBatty: The problem was not the presence of that code; it was that a double closing brace was missing. The first line should have read
<includeonly>{{#ifeq:{{SUBPAGENAME}}|sandbox||
the missing braces being those immediately after SUBPAGENAME --Redrose64 (talk) 09:54, 4 July 2014 (UTC)
So can I use the pagename template like I was and then replace it with the substituting version via bot afterwards? Abyssal (talk) 01:06, 5 July 2014 (UTC)
@Abyssal: No, forget about using {{subst:pagename}}. Just use {{subst:PAGENAME}} and no cleanup should be necessary. --Redrose64 (talk) 01:39, 5 July 2014 (UTC)
@Redrose64: I meant the {{pagename}} template. It's a lot easier than using a substituting template because everytime I've tried that in the past I've ended up with embarrassing copy-paste errors. Abyssal (talk) 01:47, 5 July 2014 (UTC)
@Abyssal: I'm sorry you had issues in the past. As I asked above, could you please try using {{subst:PAGENAME}} on one of the new articles that you're creating? There are several of us on this conversation that would be happy to help you if you have any issues. Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 03:03, 5 July 2014 (UTC)
@Abyssal: Regarding {{pagename}}, please don't use that either; its documentation states "this should never be used directly". --Redrose64 (talk) 07:05, 5 July 2014 (UTC)
@Redrose64: Thanks for the help! Sorry for all the problems I caused! <3 Abyssal (talk) 20:19, 5 July 2014 (UTC)

Skogssamer

Could you please take another look at Skogssamer article. It was in need for copyediting for Standard English according to the DYK nom reviewer. Thanks.--BabbaQ (talk) 10:28, 4 July 2014 (UTC)

@BabbaQ: I made a few more minor changes to the article for you. You may want to post a request at Misplaced Pages:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors/Requests as well. Good luck! GoingBatty (talk) 12:23, 4 July 2014 (UTC)
With the help from you and a few other users the article seems ready. Thanks :)--BabbaQ (talk) 18:43, 6 July 2014 (UTC)
Your assistance on the Brita von Horn article would be appreciated.--BabbaQ (talk) 20:26, 13 July 2014 (UTC)

DYK for Thea Austin

Updated DYK queryOn 5 July 2014, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Thea Austin, which you recently created or substantially expanded. The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Thea Austin. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, live views, daily totals), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

 — Crisco 1492 (talk) 03:03, 5 July 2014 (UTC)

Psst

Look again at the version of Kameničky that you tagged as not English. Scroll down - the new user had copied the Czech article, or the start of it, above English. (He had previously expanded the article - this was the version before he started work). All fixed now, but please check the bottom of the page and/or the history - I actually had to undelete it, it had been speedied A2! Yngvadottir (talk) 15:31, 5 July 2014 (UTC)

@Yngvadottir: Ah, I should have added {{cleanup-translation}} instead of {{Not English}} - thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 15:37, 5 July 2014 (UTC)

DYK for Skogssamer

DYK for Jan O. Jansson

Updated DYK queryOn 7 July 2014, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Jan O. Jansson, which you recently nominated. The fact was ... that Jan O. Wikiproject tools

Just FYI... I notice the edit at Misplaced Pages:WikiProject California‎ - just so you know we are working on a template to replace the tools for the projects....but we are waiting for the watch-list to work again and permanent URL's before adding them back. See Template:WPTools for the template. -- Moxy (talk) 02:07, 9 July 2014 (UTC)

@Moxy: - Yes, I believe I made a suggestion about it on the Village Pump, and then edited the template when I noticed my suggestion wasn't quite right. Keep up the good work on it! GoingBatty (talk) 02:11, 9 July 2014 (UTC)
Sorry GoingBatty did not realizes that was you. Have you talked to Dispenser is there any plans to bring back the watchlists? -- Moxy (talk) 17:27, 9 July 2014 (UTC)
@Moxy: I did not talk to Dispenser about the watchlists, as I do not use them. When things get stable, I'd like to talk to Dispenser about the unresolved Reflinks/Dab solver bugs. Good luck! GoingBatty (talk) 19:57, 9 July 2014 (UTC)

Talking with IP users

Hi. Hope you're well. I've recently come into conflict with an IP user who has added content without properly sourcing or showing evidence of the notability of the content addition. I want to help them by advicing them on what would be acceptable but as IP's don't have talk pages, I'm flummoxed on what to do. Advice? Cowlibob (talk) 15:01, 9 July 2014 (UTC)

@Cowlibob: IPs can have talk pages - see User talk:76.117.247.55 for an example. If the IP user always uses the same IP address, feel free to start a user talk page for them. Just in case they don't see their user talk page, you may also want to add a note on the article talk page with your concerns, and then revert the IP user's edit with a detailed edit summary that directs them to discuss on the article talk page. Good luck! GoingBatty (talk) 15:08, 9 July 2014 (UTC)
That's useful to know, thanks! Cowlibob (talk) 15:52, 9 July 2014 (UTC)

hello batty

Hello batty, I am a minor in a family consisting of four individuals, and my mother had me and my brother with my biological dad when she was married to him, she then dovorced him and married my step dad, she now wants to divorce my step dad and go back to my real dad, is it legal for me to stay with my step dad? Even though my biological dad and mom want me to be with them? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 41.13.80.185 (talk) 21:10, 13 July 2014 (UTC)

I'm not an expert in family law, and would suspect the laws depend on the state or country where you reside. I hope that you can talk about this with your parents & step dad, and maybe school counselors, religious leaders, or other adults you know and trust that could provide guidance for you. Good luck! GoingBatty (talk) 01:57, 14 July 2014 (UTC)
@41.13.80.185: A minor is allowed to stay with his step dad, you will have to address the court that what you want, but even for that you will need to have a case against your mom or anyone who is stopping you. You can inform police then only a case will be registered. You will have to clarify that you are not taking this decision under any kind of suppression or force. OccultZone (TalkContributionsLog) 03:49, 14 July 2014 (UTC)
you need advice from a specialist in family law, especially if you can't get your mum's agreement. -- Ohc  12:12, 14 July 2014 (UTC)

Cleanup after Project Tagger

Hi GoingBatty. Thanks for the great work BattyBot did fixing up those Project Tagger issues. Magiciandude certainly did tag a lot of articles with it! Thanks again. DH85868993 (talk) 06:38, 14 July 2014 (UTC)

Permission

Dear Sir,

I am Abdul Malik from Kabul Afghanistan and I am writing a book on Undone Infrastructure of Afghanistan. I saw your post and would like to include some it's parts in my Publication (Economic Topics) Kindly let me know of your permission if I could publish the information you've indicted in Misplaced Pages website!

Thank You,

Hi Abdul! Please see Misplaced Pages:Reusing Misplaced Pages content for the answer to your question. Good luck with the book! GoingBatty (talk) 02:33, 15 July 2014 (UTC)

DISPLAYTITLE

Hello GoingBatty, I noticed you were the last editor to make edits for the Misplaced Pages page of Noel Ashman. I want to ask if there is a way to edit the DISPLAYTITLE that reads "User:Todayilearned/Noel Ashman" to read "Noel Ashman" or something similar. Please let me know. Biancamariecar (talk) — Preceding undated comment added 16:28, 15 July 2014 (UTC)

@Biancamariecar: My bot made the last edit to User:Todayilearned/Noel Ashman, which is a userspace draft. When the draft is ready, then User:Todayilearned can move the article to Noel Ashman, which will automatically change the title. Until then, it's important the title stays as is to indicate that it is not yet an article. If you let me know when it becomes an article, I'll be happy to do some minor cleanup on it. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 16:48, 15 July 2014 (UTC)
@Biancamariecar: Sorry - didn't see Misplaced Pages:Articles for deletion/Noel Ashman (3rd nomination) before my reply. The draft would need major revisions to show notability before you could request that it becomes an article - see Misplaced Pages:Protection policy#Creation protection. GoingBatty (talk) 16:56, 15 July 2014 (UTC)

ANI

Information icon There is currently a discussion at Misplaced Pages:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents#Removal of AWB bit for User:OccultZone regarding an issue with which you may have been involved. Bgwhite (talk) 07:18, 16 July 2014 (UTC)

@Bgwhite: Thanks for the note. The discussion was already closed by the time I had a chance to review it. GoingBatty (talk) 02:19, 17 July 2014 (UTC)

Dead link tags

I think I did the best possible by adding the feature and running a bot to fix at about 4,000 pages. I still think there are some not caught by my logic. Moreover, there are cases of duplicated dead end tags on the same reference. -- Magioladitis (talk)

@Magioladitis: Great job! When there are duplicated tags, are they now both inside the ref tags, or is one inside and one outside? Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 01:52, 18 July 2014 (UTC)
This one was the most fun. In all cases I found there were both inside. AWB will move the one outside to the inside anyway. -- Magioladitis (talk) 05:11, 18 July 2014 (UTC)

DYK for Elsa Collin

Updated DYK queryOn 18 July 2014, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Elsa Collin, which you recently created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that Elsa Collin (pictured) was the first woman at any Swedish university to be part of a student spex show? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Elsa Collin. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, live views, daily totals), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000.
