A Gnome Explains
I became a WikiGnome after I found I had misspelt retrieved, as retreived (ei), three times in one article (one mistake, copied & pasted).
I set myself a "penance" of correcting the "ei" versions in Misplaced Pages articles, but only intended to do the 100 or so misspellings there were at the time
I then adopted "retrieved" (retreived, retrived, retreved) and then added "rhythm” (rhythem, rhythim, rhythym, rhytm, rythem, rythim, rythm & rythym)
I then got carried away, and adopted the Misplaced Pages:Lists of common misspellings/R - all of it. Don’t do it, it's bad for your health
Broadcasted
The Wiktionary definition of Broadcasted states that the use is proscribed, so it should not be used.
The word also appears on Misplaced Pages:Lists_of_common_misspellings/B
Broadcasted appears in some dictionaries, but not at all in others, e.g.Chambers which states "Sorry, no entries for Broadcasted were found".
Broadcast appears in all dictionaries and should be used throughout, as COMMONALITY - "Misplaced Pages tries to find words that are common to all varieties of English".
A September 2014 Beta search for Broadcast gave over 185,000 uses, compared with a search for broadcasted which gave just 30.
Of these 28, 13 are redirects to "Broadcast" articles, 5 relate to a 1924 cartoon, and the rest are misspellings in quotations or titles.

Frankly, not good enough
I have already forgotten how I found myself here, but I have now just decided that your contributions are of insufficient quality. There is no relevant barnstar, so this text will have to suffice, and let me be clear: quantity of edits is also deficient.
If this state of affairs does not improve, I will be forced to cancel your subscription to Misplaced Pages and I am bored at the moment. I wonder where I am off to next: an article? a discussion page? The good Lord knoweth and keepeth all in magic its swum have fox windowed. AntiqueReader (talk) 10:44, 24 June 2014 (UTC)
- Hi AntiqueReader
- I'm sorry to hear you are bored
- Perhaps a little DIY brain surgery might make life a little more interesting?
- I note the edit you made before posting here was to Osama bin Laden - I'm not quite sure of the association of ideas that got you from him to me
- Maybe I should suggest some more invasive DIY brain surgery? - Arjayay (talk) 11:20, 24 June 2014 (UTC)
- Permit me to reveal a crucial fact: I am long past the point where even the most skilled of brain surgeons could render me assistance.
- Saudi Arabia: It is on my watchlist; I think that is how I got here.
- I bid you farewell, but will keep an eye on you to ensure aforementioned deficiencies are remedied. AntiqueReader (talk) 14:18, 24 June 2014 (UTC)

Please have a glance
this page is a duplicate of an existing page List of airports in Andhra Pradesh. Any advice?--Vin09 (talk) 15:19, 6 July 2014 (UTC)
- I saw your request for deletion, and edited the redirect in Andhra Pradesh to (your) older article. I realize you started List of airports in Andhra Pradesh so requesting deletion of a "rival" article could be seen to be in bad faith. The new article does have some additional information, (I assume it is correct?) so a merge would be better, but this should not be under the "AirPorts" title, as Misplaced Pages does not use CamelCase, however, if a lot of information is included, it should not be under the "list" title either, as it is more than a list. If you feel it difficult to suggest a merge, because you started one of the articles, I will happily do that for you. - Arjayay (talk) 15:35, 6 July 2014 (UTC)
- No, actually I read somewhere that a duplicate article is not required for wiki, so I requested that. I'm moving it to Aiports of Andhra Pradesh and adding the required info which you mentioned.--Vin09 (talk) 15:56, 6 July 2014 (UTC)
- You should agree the merge with the other editor (seeWP:Merging) and then ensure you attribute the additional information to the original editor, before making the "AirPorts" article into a redirect. - Arjayay (talk) 17:08, 6 July 2014 (UTC)
- FYI, AirPorts has already been deleted. And the article should stay as a list. Including additional info will be redundant as the main article of each of these airports already have them and besides, adding info on each and every airport of the state makes it too elaborate. — LeoFrank 17:13, 6 July 2014 (UTC)
- @LeoFrank:Agree, these airports have already been in Andhra Pradesh, their respective pages.--Vin09 (talk) 17:19, 6 July 2014 (UTC)

Skogssamer
Hi, I was wondering if you could take a look at the article Skogssamer that I have created. I have nominated it for DYK. But before it will be finally approved some copyediting for Standard English is needed. So if you are interested please take a look. Otherwise thanks anyway :).--BabbaQ (talk) 17:56, 6 July 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks for your request BabbaQ
I think you could be out of luck with DYK, as the article does not seem to meet the eligibility criteria:-
It is not new (<7 days old) nor expanded 5x (in the last 7 days), nor promoted to good article (in the last 7 days) Please see WP:WIADYK for the full criteria.
- I always feel bad criticizing other peoples articles, but as you have asked for it, there are three points I would raise - all in the lead:-
The first sentence assumes the reader knows who the Sami are, and where they live - although they can click the link to find out, they have then left the article. I suggest that after woods, you add "of northern Scandinavia" or some thing similar, to help the reader.
The second sentence ends "northern parts of Ångermanland and north." North what?
The final two sentences appear self contradictory - if Manker's study was in the early 1900s, and "practically all habitations (plural) had been abandoned" how was there only one village? - and if it was "located in Malå during the 1800s" where was it located at other times - e.g when Manker carried out his study in the early 1900s? - This also contradicts the 1882 committee investigartion futher down
- I am also concerned about the quotation, where it appears you have only translated part of it into English
- Hope that helps - I'm off now but should be back about 07.30 UTC tomorrow - Arjayay (talk) 18:55, 6 July 2014 (UTC)
- No I do not take it as criticism but as advice :) I will take all your advice and try to improve it. Thanks.--BabbaQ (talk) 21:31, 6 July 2014 (UTC)

Deletion
South Coastal Railway Zone, I tagged it for deletion, what is wrong with it, still existing?--Vin09 (talk) 17:50, 14 July 2014 (UTC)
- As it says "This message has remained in place for seven days and so the article may be deleted without further notice." but, as I have explained before, I am not an Admin, so I can't delete it.
However,I'm not sure your reasons for proposed deletion are correct:-
As it already exists WP:CRYSTAL is not relevant - as for WP:TOOSOON that is usually used for people:- musicians, artists, sportsmen, politicians; or for companies, who have only just started and may, or may not, become notable. A bureaucratic body like a railway board does not normally become notable over time; it either is notable, or is not. - Arjayay (talk) 18:11, 14 July 2014 (UTC)- For the record, it was deleted at 06:57, 17 July 2014 - Arjayay (talk) 08:05, 23 July 2014 (UTC)

Arjayay: Why have you deleted an added section to the CC&BTC and why do you accuse me/us of disruptive editing for adding a clarifying paragraph? R W Royce (talk) 10:39, 23 July 2014 (UTC) R W Royce
- R W Royce - We do not endorse any article in such a way, and my deletion was the third time that your addition was removed - so this is not just my opinion.
As has already been explained to you, you need to start a discussion on the article's talk page, identifying specific points which you think are wrong, explaining why, and citing reliable, third party, sources to support your opinion; and if necessary, citations to show that the existing references are incorrect.
Please note that the article already suffers from an excess of primary sources, and anything that is not cited in an independant reliable source is unlikely to be acceptable. - Arjayay (talk) 10:57, 23 July 2014 (UTC)

- As I posted yesterday at User talk:83.193.22.97:-
- Yes, I removed a totally unsourced claim:-
- July 2014 statistics indicate that Wales attracted circa 5% of UK inward investment- up on previous years. Welsh "ministers" bragged this was a great peformance but it is in fact well down on the 15% the WDA regulary attracted. The WDA was taken inot private hands in an attempt to up the performance of Wales in attracting investment but Edwina Hart wrested the company out of private ownership.
- Any such claim needs reliable sources, which this does not have. Any long-standing editor would remove such an unsourced claim, whether or not they know anything about the subject, in fact their lack of knowledge means that they have no conflict of interest making it easier to maintain a neutral point of view.
FYI, the page was only drawn to my attention, because of the spelling mistakes
- I have also just removed your equally unsourced accusation.
- This page is being used by individuals or bodies with no real in-dependency to the subject, to manipulate the "story" for their own ends. It may be the WG itself!
- If you wish to edit the page to add verifiable information from reliable independent sources please do so. Please do not add unsourced information, speculation or accusations. - Arjayay (talk) 11:17, 9 August 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for taking the time to respond regarding the IP user who has been something of an issue on the Fighting Fantasy titles. This person has once again made a blind revert at Creature of Havoc, despite my spending an hour melding together all the contribured information. - Greetings. I'm contacting you as you were kind enough to respond the first time re: the anonymous IP user. A look here () shows that this person has in addition to making yet another a blind revert. They have then decided to be uncivil and try and spite with a constant refusal to sign their posts, and brag about it. Despite an offer to discuss the issue and some suggestions by myself, this user has adopted a my way or the way approach. What concerns me here is the complete disregard for the Misplaced Pages process. I offered to discuss at Talk and appear to be the subject of ridicule. Can you assist? Regards Asgardian (talk) 12:02, 18 August 2014 (UTC)
- Asgardian Please realize I am not an Admin and I know nothing of the "Fantasy genre", other than some people can get very worked up about it.
I note this is a book, rather than a video game, or movie, which most Fantasy articles seem to be about. As we do not seem to have any WP:MOS guidelines for gamebooks, or even games in general, I assume it comes under Misplaced Pages:Manual of Style/Novels, which states:-- " Plot summaries should be concise and an integral part of the article. Three or four paragraphs are usually sufficient for a full-length work, although very complex and lengthy novels may need a bit more. Shorter novels and short stories should have shorter summaries."'
- I don't know the length of the book, or how "complex" it is (I am sure those wanting a longer plot will argue that it is complex), but suspect three or four paragraphs should suffice, although currently the paragraphs are fairly short.
Although difficult to tell when other editors are IPs, you appear to be having a fairly limited discussion, which, to ensure true consensus should be broadened. I note that at the top of Talk:Creature of Havoc it states "You may prefer to discuss this article on the talk page for the List of Fighting Fantasy gamebooks article" which will presumably get more editors involved.
Finally, although I agree that people not signing their posts etc. is annoying, you should not attack the editor, just concentrate on their argument. 13:36, 18 August 2014 (UTC) - Of course, although a check of the history shows our friend is the one being uncivil. Good tips, but if not an admin, why did you respond on their board? Don't get yourself into trouble!

You should be more verbose with your Criticism
Although I appreciate your knowledge, not all of us have the time or inclination to be Wiki Evangelists. Your edits are subjective and simply stating that our attempts to rectify the issues are "not constructive" hardly exudes confidence in the community nor is it conducive to applying Misplaced Pages guidelines expediently or appropriately. As stated on the talk page, we do not have the resources to discern the difference between malicious activities and good intentions. Try to be more verbose and less megalomaniacal. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bwalton64 (talk • contribs) 19:39, 29 August 2014 (UTC)
Primera Fila
Although DAB pages are not to use piped links, WP:PIPING says "Though piping and redirects should generally not be used in disambiguation pages, there are certain cases in which they may be useful to the reader:" Among them, these include:
- "Use piping to add italics or quotation marks to part of an article name; for instance, Harvey (film), USS Adder (SS-3), "Route 66" (song), Saturnalia (dinosaur), "Hush" (Buffy episode), Neo (The Matrix).," as such, removing the pipe from these articles is against both, WP:DABPIPING and MOS:ALBUM. Also, "Primera Fila, a Spanish television program on the List of programs broadcast by TVE", lacks of grammatical sense--"the List", "television program on the List of programs" and "programs broadcast by TVE" (that's the fault of the article's title though). Please stop removing pipes where it is valid to have them. © Tbhotch (en-2.5). 00:52, 30 August 2014 (UTC)
Butterton- a Doubly Thankful Village
Hi......After 10 months research with a positive outcome, I am trying to declare our Village as a Doubly Thankful Village. You have deleted the 'D' I placed after our name. I take on board your comments but please inform me as to who is the 'independent source' who will sanction our claim???????Magstyso (talk) 09:26, 4 September 2014 (UTC)
- Hello Magstyso, thanks for your message.
Please understand, it is not that I disbelieve you, but Misplaced Pages never allows the use of original research, only verifiable material already published in reliable sources. You need to interest someone in your research, but they need to have a reputation for fact checking, and be seen as independent, so local papers (some of which publish almost anything, in order to fill space) are rarely deemed suitable, although some are, and sometimes a piece in a local paper will lead to a larger piece in a national publication.
I cannot see the BBC re-writing the article used to verify the current list of "Doubly" villages, and as far as I know the hellfireclub, which produces the main First World War lists, limits itself to WWI - although they may be worth approaching, as this would be an interesting addition to their lists. Thirdly, there must be some reputable local history societies, who might like to include your research, but please do not "self-publish" it, as that is deemed neither reliable, nor independent.
You may find more specific help at either Misplaced Pages:WikiProject History or Portal:History where editors with a specific interest in history tend to gather, although those talk pages seem rather slow to generate responses. Finally, it is worth raising this at Talk:Thankful Villages, which may attract someone with a very specific interest, and also gets your claim on the talk page. - Arjayay (talk) 09:55, 4 September 2014 (UTC)

An Article title needs changing
I'm referring to the article Luis Escobar, 7th Marquis of the Guadalquivir Marshes. According to Spanish custom, it is just plain wrong, and some would find it offensive, to refer to him as Luis Escobar in a reference work (or legal document). Both the Spanish es:wikipidia and the IMDb refer to him as Luis Escobar Kirkpatrick. I'm sure I could find more documentation in Spanish name control agencies if needed, but I don't see why the Spanish Misplaced Pages isn't enough reference. Presumably they know Spanish naming customs better than any of us do.
I have changed the article but don't know how to change the title. I thought either you could do it or would know whom I should direct this request to. Many thanks. deisenbe (talk) 22:18, 17 September 2014 (UTC)
- Hi deisenbe - thanks for the question.
- The rules for article titles are set out in Misplaced Pages:Article titles in particular the section WP:RECOGNIZABLE which states:-
- "Misplaced Pages ... prefers to use the name that is most frequently used to refer to the subject in English-language reliable sources"
- We are not, therefore, interested in what es:wikipidia uses - they presumably use the common name in Spanish, whereas we want English, whilst neither Misplaced Pages, nor IMDb are reliable sources
- Although not "proof" of the common name, Google searches are a good indication; and these give 16,200 matches for Luis Escobar, 7th Marquis of the Guadalquivir Marshes and 135,000 matches for "Luis Escobar Kirkpatrick". Although many of the results are not in English, this is a clear majority.
- The page needs to be WP:Moved - which as your account is autoconfirmed, you should be able to do. Assuming you are on the standard "Vector" skin, click the "More" button to the left of the search-box, which gives a drop down including "Move" - click "Move" and fill in the form. Moving the page will leave a redirect at Luis Escobar, 7th Marquis of the Guadalquivir Marshes so anyone looking for that page (which will still appear in search engines etc. for some weeks) will automatically be redirected to the new title Luis Escobar Kirkpatrick, and moving the article will preserve the edit history.
- Please do not "cut and paste" the article to the new title, as this will loose the edit history, back to 2006, and it will have to be undone.
Once moved, please go to Luis Escobar and change the title on that disambiguation page, to the new title, and also change the redirects at Luis Escobar (actor) and Luis Escobar (director) These changes avoid double redirects, which can cause problems.
Once moved, if you click on "What links here" in the left hand column of the new page, it will show you other articles that may need their links changing, to avoid a redirect, although single redirects are not really such a big problem.
If you would like me to move the page and tidy up, just ask, but it is a useful thing to learn how to do - Arjayay (talk) 14:45, 18 September 2014 (UTC)
- Um - deisenbe...
I see you have moved the page to Luis Escobar Kirkpatrick, 7th Marquis of the Guadalquivir Marshes, which with only 6,400 matches is the least common name, with significantly fewer than the one it was on. The straight Luis Escobar Kirkpatrick, without the Marquis, is the most common. - Arjayay (talk) 15:03, 18 September 2014 (UTC)
- Um - deisenbe...
- I agree completely. Should I undo the change I made and redo it, or proceed to change the change? Haven't gotten to Redirects yet.deisenbe (talk) 15:33, 18 September 2014 (UTC)
- deisenbe, it's probably best to undo it (or move it back) and then move it again, to avoid any treble redirects - although I admit I've not done that before. - Arjayay (talk) 15:40, 18 September 2014 (UTC)
- I went to undo the change, and the reply was that it had already been undone. At this point I've lost track of what's going on, and would appreciate it if you would just fix it. Thank youi. deisenbe (talk) 16:18, 18 September 2014 (UTC)
- deisenbe, OK all done, pages moved and links tidied up.
as can be seen here the only links not direct to the new page are the ones in the discussion on this page - Arjayay (talk) 16:41, 18 September 2014 (UTC)

Your edits to Monkees album articles
I'm pleased that you fixed up some of my contributions on Monkees' album articles (e.g. typos etc). I'm just a little unsure as to why you removed the links I added from pages such as this one. The reason I added them was to prevent users from removing the information I added due to supposed lack of evidence that the information I added was correct. -- C.Syde (talk | contribs) 08:01, 24 September 2014 (UTC)
- Hi User:C.Syde65
What you added were WP:External links in the main text of the article, which are normally not allowed - (we only use External links in the External links section and in the infobox) hence my edit summary "Rm EL from bodytext".
What you should have added were WP:References which add the little number, and explain where they come from, at the foot of the page. I should have, and normally do, change External links to References, but did not think this information was sufficiently controversial to require a reference. However, having now reviewed what you added, I can see why you felt it needed a reference. For information about the various ways to add references, please see Help:Referencing for beginners - Arjayay (talk) 08:20, 24 September 2014 (UTC)
- Oh, okay. Also I was wondering how you upload album pictures. I don't know how to upload pictures to wiki. -- C.Syde (talk | contribs) 10:01, 24 September 2014 (UTC)
Hello again User:C.Syde65
Album covers are copyright, but can be used under a claim of “fair-use” although they have to be uploaded to English Misplaced Pages, whereas non-copyright images are uploaded to Misplaced Pages Commons
Being “fair-use” there are a few more rules, particularly about them having to be low-resolution images, and controlling where they can be used.
Album covers can only be used in an article about that specific album. They cannot be used in a general article about the band, and cannot be used in a discography
- Find a copy of the cover which has at least one side 300pixels or less. Amazon is good for recent albums – most of their images are 300 x 300 or 240 x 240. If you have to photograph or scan an old cover, because you can’t find an image, or have to use Google images to find one, it may need reducing in size to bring it down
- Save this image to your computer, preferably under a sensible name, not an image number
- On the English Misplaced Pages, click “Upload file” under “tools” on the left hand side panel
- Follow the instructions and note very carefully the file name you use – this is case sensitive and cannot use “illegal” file name characters
- Go to the page you want to use the file
If there is an infobox insert the file as Cover = title (must be exact & include extension e.g. .jpg)
Save page (Will take a few seconds to link up the first time)
Hope that helps - any more questions - just ask - Arjayay (talk) 10:42, 24 September 2014 (UTC)

4 Notable people from Azamgarh
I have gone through all 3 articles on Azamgarh and I think the fit page to add these people is Azamgarh itself. My father hails from Azamgarh and I have extended family and house there. In the state of Uttar Pradesh, towns are organised as districts. Not all towns / cities can be district. The districts are then clubbed into divisions. So, Azamgarh town is a district which also happens to be part of Azamgarh division. Though the website states "Azamgargh an official website of the district" but there is no website of town / municipality so do we remove Azamgarh page? Please note municipality is a part of district and hence there won't be a separate website for it.
Also going by that logic, we need to move following people to district website as they belong to places i.e. town/villages in Azamgarh:
- Shaikh Shamim Ahmed - born in small town of Sudanipur (Shudnipur), in Azamgarh district.
- Kaifi Azmi - born in village of Mizwaa(n) in Azamgarh
- Hamiduddin Farahi - born in village Phreha in the district of Azamgarh
- Iqbal Suhail - born in village Badheria, Azamgarh
Similarly Delhi is a City, Capital and also a State in India. So, do we create separate pages and add people names in different page? No, right?
Do let me know if you have any further queries. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Vinodtiwari2608 (talk • contribs) 14:49, 2 October 2014 (UTC)
- Vinodtiwari2608 I fully understand the town/district/division system, and as I have already stated on your user page, we have an article on each of them, and those people not from Azamgarh itself need to be in Azamgarh District. When removing the names the first time, I clearly stated why, naming each town in turn. to make it clear that they are not from Azamgarh itself. We have had a lot of problems on that page with such additions, which is why there is a clear hidden text in the article immediately above where you have been adding these names. If other names need to be moved, then they should be moved, not used as a "reason" for adding even more information in the wrong place. - Arjayay (talk) 14:58, 2 October 2014 (UTC)
Arjayay I understand and appreciate your concern but I think you are not understanding my point. You may cross verify it with anyone hailing from the city. Further if you see the website it a common one for district and division. It also has a place holder for commissioner name which as present is empty. DM or District Magistrate is a District level official. You may want to check with someone whom you find trustworthy to verify, if you don't concur with me. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Vinodtiwari2608 (talk • contribs) 15:03, 2 October 2014 (UTC)
- Vinodtiwari2608 You don't appear to understand the very basic problem:- People not from a place, should not appear in an article about that place.
Trying to justify why people not from Azamgarh, should appear in an article about Azamgarh, makes no sense whatsoever, and is simply WP:IDONTLIKEIT.
Thank you for pointing out that more people should be deleted from the article - although 2 have reliable sources to show that they lived in Azamgarh, so do have a connection with the place.
