Twice the chief minister of the state out of peculiar defaults, she is one politician who is still in high demand be it the BJP or the Congress. This is the kind of carte du jour Mayawati relishes. Yet, she can change the course of the game anyday. No alliance with anyone in UP, she says today but tomorrow could be a new day.

The lady in the land of Ram has reasons to smile. UP chief minister Kalyan Singh is caught in a cleft between his detractors in the BJP and his coalition partners. Congress, after the initial euphoria of wins in Delhi, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh assemblies in 1998, is clutching at straws in UP. Samajwadi chief Mulayam Singh Yadav's muslim base is under threat after his refusal to support Sonia Gandhi. This is the kind of menu Mayawati relishes. Yet, she can change the course. No alliance with anyone in UP, she says today but tomorrow could be different. Before she became the chief minister of UP her favorite slogan was " tilak, tarazu aur talwar, unpar padey joote char (banias, brahmins and thakurs need to be thrashed with shoes) yet she had no problems with taking support of the BJP, ashirvad from brahmin N D Tewari and thakur V P Singh, whom she and mentor Kanshi Ram had tirelessly described as a snake. Mayawati has no regrets about her tirade against India's greatest icon Mahatma Gandhi. She is happy with the media for having played up her iconoclasm. As part of the BSP-Samajwadi coalition Mayawati used to sit back on a sofa in the secretariat and lecture to senior officers who were made to squat on the carpet around her. Her tenure as chief minister was full of controversies, be it creating new districts, replacing names of towns with Dalit names, or the allegation of shady deals. In 1996 she was elected to the parliament.

Born on January 15, 1956 in Badalpur village of Ghaziabad, Mayawati completed her post graduation in law from Delhi University. Entered politics in early 1980s as Kanshi Ram's `Cheli' (disciple), Mayawati now has grown in stature to become the aggressive face of Dalit ( weaker sections) politics. The former U.P. chief minister Kalyan Singh placed certain corrupt deals during her regime under the microscope. But nothing deterred her. She headed her party's election campaign in the state. She attacked vigorously both Kalyan Singh and Mulayam Singh in each of her public meetings. She contested successfully from the Akbarpur Lok Sabha seat with her eyes firmly set on a national status now. Her party's impressive performance of improving its tally from 4 seats in 1998 to 14 seats in 1999 Lok Sabha elections has undoubtedly established her as one of the strongest Dalit leaders in U.P.

Her tenure as chief minister was full of controversies, be it creation of new districts and renaming existing towns after Dalit icons, or the allegation of shady deals. In 1996 she was elected to the parliament. The media likes her or hates her but cannot even consider ignoring her. Mayawati's growing stature has made her party - the BSP a force to reckon with in Uttar Pradesh.

Even after holding the high-profiled office of the chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Mayawati continues to harp on the mysteries that have always surrounded her. She still prefers a house, which is more like a fortress, highly-protected to keep herself away from the prying public eyes. That is the reason why very few people have had the privilege to set their eyes on the pure gold statue of Bhim Rao Ambedkar, which graces her bedroom
