New Year

Thanks - same to you. I'm about ready for this one to be over and done with, frankly.

I hope so, but I'm not holding my breath. It's going to take longer than I hope to reach the 5 million mark. I want to get back to article creating myself at some point...perhaps once I've passed the million-edit mark. :-) So I'll throw a few in now and again to help reach the goal. But...we'll see. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoLo dicono a Signa. 20:27, 31 December 2014 (UTC)

Don't forget India - I suspect we'll be hearing a lot from there. And Pakistan, if some recent article creation I've seen is any indication.
I've also discovered, through poking around for WikiProject Women Writers, that there are a lot of dark corners that need illuminating and filling. Have a look at some of the South Pacific writer categories - Category:Solomon Islands writers, Category:Marshallese writers, Category:Vanuatuan writers...to say nothing of African categories. There has to be more than we've seen thus far. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoLo dicono a Signa. 20:46, 31 December 2014 (UTC)
Perhaps. But I still suspect there's a lot of things left uncovered. I mean, judging by some of the missing articles I've noticed for places like Italy...hell, even the US isn't covered nearly as well as it could be.--Ser Amantio di NicolaoLo dicono a Signa. 20:51, 31 December 2014 (UTC)
True. And I see some good work being done on Italy and Mexico, off the top of my head. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoLo dicono a Signa. 22:36, 31 December 2014 (UTC)

Dr. B and @Ser Amantio di Nicolao: Speaking of the US... Can't believe all the missing building articles which belong in Category:Broadway (Manhattan). Inspiration at Commons. I'll work on them over the weekend. Jump in if you're in the mood. --Rosiestep (talk) 18:15, 1 January 2015 (UTC) Rosiestep Just goes to show that even in the heart of America there's still lots missing!! I'm going to begin on Waldorf Astoria tomorrow I think.♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:17, 1 January 2015 (UTC)

Templates would be really helpful... maybe one for Broadway in Manhattan and another for Broadway in the Bronx? Sectioned out by neighborhood. It would be handy for readers, of course, but I'd really like the redlinks laid out. --Rosiestep (talk) 23:50, 1 January 2015 (UTC)

Good job on the template. I think Museum of African Art and Bayard–Condict Building] should be removed as they're not directly on Broadway in Manhattan, ok? I've added others... there are a jillion still missing. This could take a long time. I've put the building name in parens as a place holder; obviously the article name should be either the street number or the name (not both). This template would really benefit from imbedded coords. I think I remember seeing that done on some Nunavut articles I worked on with CambridgeBayWeather a few years ago. --Rosiestep (talk) 03:41, 3 January 2015 (UTC)

I'm unhappy with my lumpy additions. I think we need a redlist which pairs street number with building name, if ones exists, but not the way I've done it within the template. Maybe on the template's talkpage? And there should be links to the commons cat if one exists. So much work. Lol! --Rosiestep (talk) 15:21, 3 January 2015 (UTC)

Hi, You put some comments on Misplaced Pages:Featured list candidates/List of Scheduled Monuments in South Somerset/archive1 but didn't say if you think they are resloved or whether you think there are still issues which stop it meeting the Featured list criteria?— Rod 11:38, 3 January 2015 (UTC)

DYK for Hadatha

Updated DYK queryOn 3 January 2015, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Hadatha, which you recently nominated. The fact was ... that the Palestinian Arab village of Hadatha, where late Roman and Byzantine ceramics were found, was depopulated during the 1948 Palestine war? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Hadatha. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, live views, daily totals), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Another good one. I fondly remember that a year ago you helped me over depression by a fast GA review, - this year begins in better mood, but with a FAC under time pressure, - would like to see it 7 February which is soon. In case of interest: BWV 22, part of the project to reflect stages in Bach's career, here the audition for Leipzig, with a council preferring other candidates. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:44, 4 January 2015 (UTC)

Not many these days, one DYK in exactly a month! Sorry to hear that you were feeling depressed, given that way some people are on here at times though it doesn't surprise me! I'd like to see Philip Seymour Hoffman at TFA for 2 February on 1st anniversary but am not sure if it will pass in time to nom and be approved..♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:52, 4 January 2015 (UTC)

I thought everybody remembered as well as I do how down I was when 28bytes left a year ago. It was over when he returned. - If you nom your FAC I would look, but there are people who think we should not "celebrate" anniversaries of death, which would give you more time, to birthday in July ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:40, 5 January 2015 (UTC)

Gerda Arendt Hoffman is at FAC already!♦ Dr. Blofeld 14:47, 5 January 2015 (UTC)

Sivaganga Palace

Gary Cooper peer review

Hello, Doctor. I hope your holidays were pleasant. Today I created a peer review request for the Gary Cooper article you promoted to GA last month. I spent the past two weeks making additional edits related to GA comments and suggestions. If you have the time, please review the article and leave any feedback at the peer review page in preparation for FAC nomination. For other reviewers, do you recommend that I reach out to the editors who contributed to the John Barrymore peer review? Regards, Bede735 (talk) 01:54, 5 January 2015 (UTC)

Bede735 Yes, try to request that all who contributed have a look at it. I'm sure many will think it worth doing.♦ Dr. Blofeld 07:45, 5 January 2015 (UTC)

William Waldorf AstorWhen they make a movie about W. W. Astor, the casting director better call Kelsey Grammer

Can you find a useable photo of the Waldorf Hotel (Fargo, North Dakota)? --Rosiestep (talk) 01:58, 6 January 2015 (UTC)

Great job on Waldorf Astoria New York. I'm thinking about carving out Waldorf Astoria New York#Original buildings and starting something like Waldorf Astoria (New York, 1893)? There's plenty of additional info to add to the 1893 hotel article thereafter. The 1893 hotel could be summarized in a paragraph in the history and/or lede section of the Waldorf Astoria New York article. Your thoughts? --Rosiestep (talk) 02:26, 6 January 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for separating it out and adding headers. I saw you working on parts of it so I tried to keep my additions in the lede, figuring I could move them down later. Turning out pretty nice! --Rosiestep (talk) 20:56, 6 January 2015 (UTC)

That's what I thought. I'm bored with it for the moment, so leaving it alone, but maybe next weekend or so. --Rosiestep (talk) 20:36, 11 January 2015 (UTC)

Namaste! --Rosiestep (talk) 20:51, 11 January 2015 (UTC) I know you're a sleuth at things like this, so if you stumble across an acceptable image of Bangalore Nagarathnamma‎, can you add it? --Rosiestep (talk) 20:38, 11 January 2015 (UTC)

The 1893, good job. Specific sources: done. Empire Room: I see the source that says the Waldorf's restaurant was Empire in style, so I'd stick with that. Overlap: Paragraphs 3 and 4 of the joined hotel section aren't specific to exactly where the mentioned spaces were located, Waldorf vs. Astoria so we can keep them as is, or remove them; I'm fine either way. Bios: I'll work on them in the next day or two; tuckered out now. Names: We have to square up the names: Hotel Waldorf vs. Waldorf Hotel; Hotel Astoria vs. Astoria Hotel. As for ghits, it's pretty much a coin toss but appears the former outnumbers the latter.--Rosiestep (talk) 03:55, 13 January 2015 (UTC)

Althorp

I made a start and left you many hidden comments/questions in the early sections. In general, given that this is an article about the property, I think you need more detail and clarity about the building of the house and any demolishment(s) and rebuilding. -- Ssilvers (talk) 04:10, 6 January 2015 (UTC)

I finished the history section and left you some more hidden comments. One confusing item is the why the Duke of Marlborough gave the estate away. Did he retain the other Spencer estates, and if so, how can Althorpe, alone, have been considered "the greatest inheritance in the kingdom", when in previous generations, the numerous Spencer estates had all been inherited together. I am very sorry, but this is all the time I can spare on Althorp. I hope these edits and questions were helpful. All the best! -- Ssilvers (talk) 22:15, 6 January 2015 (UTC)
There must be architectural records. Perhaps info is available at the county or town historical society, or the local librarian will be able to point you to the records. It seems obvious to me that, for a GA or FA article about a house, you need to find the records concerning the early buildings. You just wrote that "presumably" the older building was replaced by the 1688 building (rather than incorporating it), but that is, of course, not adequate. Good luck with the article! -- Ssilvers (talk) 22:35, 6 January 2015 (UTC)
I replied to you on my Talk page. -- Ssilvers (talk) 23:34, 6 January 2015 (UTC)

Replaceable fair use File:Christiaan Barnard.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:Christiaan Barnard.jpg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Misplaced Pages. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and add the text {{di-replaceable fair use disputed|<your reason>}} below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
  2. On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Discasto (talk) 12:21, 6 January 2015 (UTC) PS: see commons:Category:Christiaan Barnard

List of colleges and universities in Delaware

Dr. Blofeld, Happy New Year sir! I've returned to Misplaced Pages on a more regular basis now, and I've been attempting to expand some of my previous articles to FL and GA status. As part of this initiative, I've placed List of colleges and universities in Delaware on the FL nomination list for the third time in hopes that I can finally get it passed. Moondram Pirai

Would you like to conduct a GA review on the film, doc? I did not want to ask you earlier as you were busy with 2 GA reviews. Ssven2 04:13, 2 January 2015 (UTC)

I happened to notice your sandbox on great films made. You might want to include this film which you have opted to review to that list. The links on YouTube are as below. It has English subtitles BTW.

Moondram Pirai - Part 1

Moondram Pirai - Part 2

Hope you enjoy watching it. — Ssven2 08:12, 8 January 2015 (UTC)

Thanks. I haven't forgotten the review don't worry. Will do it later.♦ Dr. Blofeld 10:47, 8 January 2015 (UTC)

I've seen the film now. It began very well, the first 40 minutes especially were excellent but I felt it dragged too much second half with a lack of pace, although some nice scenery. I found the lead actress's voice grating on me a lot, like a demented chicken at times, especially during the scene where the woodcutter tries to rape her but I most enjoyed all of the shots of Silk Smitha! Quite sexy until she opens her mouth :-) Overall an enjoyable film!♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:44, 8 January 2015 (UTC)

Thank you for watching. The climax scene was the film's highlight. What was your opinion of it, doc? Ssven2 02:54, 9 January 2015 (UTC)

The best part for me was Silk lying on the bed looking at the old fat guy :-) Yeah the end was good, and fairly unusual it seems for an Indian film as a negative one. I liked the location of it, really felt like a retreat in rural India! Any idea what film this is from with Silk? That might be worth watching too :-) ♦ Dr. Blofeld 08:06, 9 January 2015 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) I have written that point in the plot as "Cheenu acts like a dancing monkey that Viji developed a liking for"; that good? Kailash29792 (talk) 05:34, 9 January 2015 (UTC)

No idea about the name of the film the pic is related to. Haven't seen any other film with Silk other than Moondram Pirai. — Ssven2 15:18, 9 January 2015 (UTC)

Request your possible involvement

This probably takes some explaining. At the recent ArbCom case regarding Landmark Worldwide I suggested that maybe it might be possible to get together a group of editors with some broad experience of wikipedia and knowledge of the general topic area to get together and review the sources available on the topic with the intention of ultimately starting a broader discussion, probably through RfC, about the issues involved. It is more or less in line with a proposal I made for something like a "content" committee, which would probably be more reasonably called a "comment" committee, given the role I think RfC and the hopefully wide variety and number of editors might play in the real outcome of the RfC at Misplaced Pages:Village pump (idea lab)/Archive 16#Rehashing an old idea - Maybe a "Comment committee" to deal with content?. ArbCom itself requested some broader input in the topic area in its decision.

I was thinking of editors around here who might have some sort of broad experience in the social/religious issues involved and you were one of the first names that came to mind for maybe taking part in reviewing information presented and evaluating sources and the like. If you would have any interest in maybe taking part in this sort of test run for such a committee, I would obviously welcome it. I haven't actually started a separate section on the article talk page yet, because I wanted to see if there were any responses from the individuals I was considering, or, potentially, anyone else who might be interested. John Carter (talk) 16:54, 8 January 2015 (UTC)

I did look at it and had no idea what it was you really wanted. I know little about social and religious issues. Film, maybe!♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:03, 8 January 2015 (UTC)

Basically, in your particular case, a good article reviewer. Part of the hope is to get the resulting articles up to GA and FA, like with everywhere else, and having a reviewer on hand to help ensure that the resulting articles are good ones would obviously be really useful. John Carter (talk) 22:21, 8 January 2015 (UTC)

Glad that you've seen Dersu Uzala. The scene where they race against the snow storm to build a shelter grips me every time I see it. MarnetteD|Talk 16:17, 9 January 2015 (UTC)

MarnetteD That's a pity! He was top tier for a brief period in the early to mid 60s I thought with The Birds and The VIPs etc but it was relatively brief, but not exactly Burt Lancaster level and endurance! Yes, I'm having a Kurosawa fest at the moment, I've got two more later ones of his on DVD to see too! ♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:20, 9 January 2015 (UTC)

I look forward to knowing which ones are on the schedule and your reaction to them :-) MarnetteD|Talk 16:23, 9 January 2015 (UTC)
Kagemusha and Ran. If they turn out to be as good as expected I'll get another lot! ♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:25, 9 January 2015 (UTC)
Well not to give away any plot points it is worth noting that they are part of his later career where he was more reflective and lyrical in his filming and storytelling. The fact that his eyesight was failing makes what he put onscreen even more remarkable. In lieu of storyboards he created numerous paintings to illustrate what he wanted to put on film. They are part of the Criterion Collection sets for both films but they might be available online if you are interested. Enjoy your viewing!! MarnetteD|Talk 16:33, 9 January 2015 (UTC)
What always amazes me about Kurosawa's films is how he delivers a message at times with pictures and makes use of natural landscapes and elements and contrasts in silence and noise. Particularly woodland in films like Rashomon and Derzu which gives it that haunting sort of atmosphere and supernatural presence at times. While he might not be quite as affecting emotionally as some of the other Japanese masters such as Ozu and Mizoguchi his films are a joy to watch. Ebert says something about Kurosawa's landscapes in a review: "Besides his exemplary cast, Kurosawa makes evocative use of landscape to realize his vision. The mountains and plains of Hidetora's domain were shot at Mount Aso, an active volcano in the broad central plains of Kyushu, Japan's still largely wild southern island. "♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:40, 9 January 2015 (UTC)
You have that %100 correct. For me the one director that comes close to AK's use of the natural world is Herzog. Michael Coulter is not a director but his camerawork captures the outdoors magnificently. Local Hero is a masterpiece. The final sequence of The Dead is full of snowy landscapes all over Ireland. I can still remember the first time I saw the film saying (in my head as I abhor talking in movie theaters) that looks like it was filmed by Coulter and, lo and behold, there was his name in the credits. MarnetteD|Talk 16:52, 9 January 2015 (UTC)
Sometimes even just the trickling of a stream or something or the hooting of an owl can have a moving impact on the viewer! Many average filmmakers could do it but not create the same effect, it's the timing/contrast and overall vision which is special I think. Local Hero is on my list to watch, and of course sometime I'll try to complete both Kurosawa's and Herzog's filmographies!♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:59, 9 January 2015 (UTC)

MarnetteD Seen Kagemusha now. Great film. Really stunning at times, is it me or did it feel like a David Lean picture at times? Some of the landscapes and devices involving the horse scenes etc. Lawrence of Arabia and El Cid in particular I'm sure had to have been an influence on him in some of the outdoor battle scenes. I wonder if Kurosawa was influenced by films like Lawrence of Arabia? ♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:08, 11 January 2015 (UTC)

Sorry I missed this DB. Your notice got buried under another editor undoing about 14 of my edits. As you may know AK was influenced by numerous western directors - particularly John Ford - so a DL influence is quite likely. In turn there are scenes in all three of the Lord of the Rings films that Jackson seems to have lifted from Kagemusha (and other Kurosawa films for that matter.) The fake Shingen's gallop in front of the soldiers is echoed by Theoden's ride in front of the Rohirrim before their charge in the battle at Minas Tirith. I hope you noticed the final performances in a Kurosawa film by long time members of his acting troupe - Kamatari Fujiwara has a brief scene that is in long shot so it is easy to miss - and Takashi Shimura (who had been in AK's very first film and had actually been in more of his films than Mifune had) - Shimura's scene had been cut from the US release of the film (which I saw on Christmas night 1980) and was not in the VHS release of the film either. It wasn't until the Criterion DVD release somewhere around the turn of the century that I finally got to see it! MarnetteD|Talk 04:25, 13 January 2015 (UTC)

Re; Dunces and Dangers

Have checked and so far, no posters or lobby cards have come up. What can be done, though, is to do screencaps from the film itself. A copy is at Internet Archive. No worries re: license as it would be PD-US. We hope (talk) 14:04, 10 January 2015 (UTC)

All of the copies seem to jiggle a lot :) but here's another link to a copy of the film. I saw only about 3 mentions of it in the old film trade papers; none had any photos. It's possible they didn't produce any posters or cards due to a limited budget. This is something I think you'll like--all B & W and all said to be in the public domain, though I would run a check on those from 1923-on before using any screenshots. The Teamwork Barnstar
For our combined efforts in getting Philip Seymour Hoffman to FA - and in time for that special date too! We did good. Thanks for all the hard work. Loeba (talk) 10:48, 11 January 2015 (UTC)

You never replied to me about changing the lead, so I don't know if you're unhappy with it or anything, but hey ho. Article promoted, woop! So glad it was in time too, heh - I know I initially said "if it doesn't pass in time, nevermind", but once I'd put the effort in I realised it'd be really annoying for it not too! I've already put in the TFA request (putting the blurb together was easy, for once). --Loeba (talk) 10:51, 11 January 2015 (UTC)

Yeye! Thanks Loeba! What was it about the lead you wanted to change? ♦ Dr. Blofeld 11:13, 11 January 2015 (UTC)

Anita Ekberg & Taylor Negron

Anita Ekberg has died. RIP. --Rosiestep (talk) 16:23, 11 January 2015 (UTC)

Yup, I was just saying to Marnette! 2015 I suspect is going to be another year of big losses. There's a LOT of actors born around that 1930 mark who are going to go in the next few years! I keep expecting news of Christopher Lee and Sean Connery!♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:33, 11 January 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for making me aware of this sad news DB. I fear that you are right about more of those that we admire leaving us. I noticed your addition of the Fonda, Ferrer, Hepburn War and Peace to the list. When you have the time (7 or 8 years from now I would guess) you should see Bondarchuk's War and Peace (film series). I saw it as a teen and found it remarkable but when it finally came out on DVD (beware of shortened versions this is the one to look for) I was amazed at the variety of film techniques SB used at various points in the film. His Waterloo (1970 film) is also worth your time. In this day and age of huge CGI armies popping up in all manner of films his use of real human hordes is quite stunning. MarnetteD|Talk 17:09, 11 January 2015 (UTC)

MarnetteD Yes, I saw it perhaps a year back, I'd forgotten it though, there's still a number of films missing! Perhaps a tad long though. War and Peace (film series) looks a much better way to cover it in installments and look forward to watching that sometime!♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:18, 11 January 2015 (UTC)

... And the much younger Taylor Negron. RIP. --Rosiestep (talk) 20:08, 11 January 2015 (UTC)

complet the translation from french to english

Good morning, Can you complet the translation and correct my mistakes of this page Rachid Mouffouk from french to english like you do with Omar Derdour ?. Thank you in advance. Vikoula5 (talk) 10:19, 12 January 2015 (UTC)

Done, thanks Vikoula5, keep up the good work! Ipigott and Rosiestep speak French very well I believe, that right Rosie? My command of the knowledge is very basic but fortunately it translates reasonably well and you can work it out. It's one of the languages, along with Spanish and Italian I'd love to be fluent in largely because it would allow me to watch more films hehe, but I always get discouraged hearing native speakers speak and puts me off because it's a huge task to learn. I have the greatest admiration for people like Ipigott who can speak at least half a dozen languages!♦ Dr. Blofeld 10:37, 12 January 2015 (UTC)

Oui, I speak French, though my understanding of it is better than my speaking... same for Spanish and Serbian. The last few years, I've been working with Asturian and Catalan, and making some progress with them. --Rosiestep (talk) 15:04, 12 January 2015 (UTC)

Thank you anyway. i will conatct the users you mentioned me. If you need basic translation from french, arabic or russian you can ask me. --Vikoula5 (talk) 18:07, 12 January 2015 (UTC)
Yes, you correct my mistakes thank you , but in french version there are other section that i can't translate in english. cause it's not my level of language.--Vikoula5 (talk) 19:34, 12 January 2015 (UTC)

Re:Waldorf

Let me go through the 3-4 old books at Internet Archive where all of the old photos came from. There are some plans in them, but offhand I'm not sure if they're originals or not. These books have a lot of written history also. Let me see what's there and also leave the links to the books the IA has for you as they probably will be good for information & citations. Will start be re-naming or moving the category. :) We hope (talk) 19:56, 12 January 2015 (UTC)

What I have so far: We hope (talk) 20:58, 12 January 2015 (UTC)
I should have a more recent photo of a well-known "biggie" who stayed there in the 1950s shortly, along with a free-use photo of Lucius Beebe. Just ran across some very interesting newspaper articles at Newspapers.com which I think you could use. I'll clip them and post the open links for them here. We hope (talk) 00:12, 13 January 2015 (UTC)
I thought I was seeing things, but.... talk about fate :) We hope (talk) 22:38, 12 January 2015 (UTC)
oh yeah LOL I know!! I used to have a picture of one on my user page!! Thankyou so much for the recent pics and links, I'll take a full look at the time tomorrow! Byeee!!♦ Dr. Blofeld 22:40, 12 January 2015 (UTC)
  • The Voice of Broadway part 1-page 6 The Bee October 5, 1937 via Newspapers.com When Dorothy Kilgallen vacationed, her daily column was guest-written by other notables of her choice. This one was written by Oscar of the Waldorf and he wrote about the Waldorf's history, noting that Buffalo Bill was once a guest at the Waldorf, among other things.
Nice, added the film to my list :-) Some really great finds there WH! The Sherry one especially!♦ Dr. Blofeld 07:14, 13 January 2015 (UTC)
The closest I've come to old floor plans for the Waldorf are from 1910-1911, after the two hotels had been joined. It looks like NYPL has a copy, but the documents aren't online. No one has had anything earlier online that I've been able to find. We hope (talk) 14:04, 13 January 2015 (UTC)

Yes, there is an article on the Martinique Hotel: Radisson Hotel Martinique! As for Hardenbergh's Manhattan Hotel, it seems to still be a redlink. --Rosiestep (talk) 03:23, 14 January 2015 (UTC)

Would you be interested in this for the article? It's before 1923 but NYPL has been tricky--they label everything with a copyright mark. There's no way they could possible own the copyright on the menu; it was printed for the W-A by Tiffany (see bottom). ;) We hope (talk) 16:39, 16 January 2015 (UTC)

Sure, everything helps!♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:53, 16 January 2015 (UTC)

While I'm there, Ill get an old Louis Sherry menu too. Not as colorful but plenty of menu items. ;) We hope (talk) 17:04, 16 January 2015 (UTC)
We hope great! Can you find any of Paris Ball, I think I have enough material to start a separate article, I wonder if any of those old magazines mention it?♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:41, 16 January 2015 (UTC)
No menus for it-just looked. The Lantern magazines have nothing either as they're geared toward people in the performing arts. My thought would be to look at old newspapers because this should have been mentioned in some society columns. If you want me to look, first I need to take care of some photos that I'm in the middle of uploading. They're ones from Otto Perry and you want to make it absolutely clear that the postcard photos did NOT come from the DPL. Perry, as a railfan, took many photos which he shared with his fellow railfans. These cards were circulated by Perry himself before his death in 1970. DPL did not have access to any of his material until that point. We hope (talk) 19:11, 16 January 2015 (UTC)

I merged The Waldorf–Astoria Orchestra into the 1893's Society section early this morning. --Rosiestep (talk) 02:02, 17 January 2015 (UTC)

Haha! I'm on it! --Rosiestep (talk) 17:11, 17 January 2015 (UTC)
Started having a look at newspapers last night re: April in Paris. I can get at least 1 Marilyn Mornoe photo of her at the Ball and one of Marlene Dietrich there also. This is what I saw while reading last night--the papers are before 1963, so a check for renewals and finding none would "free" them for us. :) We hope (talk) 13:42, 17 January 2015 (UTC)
That would be cool!! Funny but the Ann Vaccone quote in my book about it being for the very very upper class she added a rather snobby comment about "of course there's no way to exclude the riff raff though" and Marilyn was the first one I thought of which she'd probably have turned her nose up at at hehe!! ♦ Dr. Blofeld 13:59, 17 January 2015 (UTC)
Marilyn was a "key player" in a red-hot feud between Elsa Maxwell and the Duchess of Windsor. Both were on the Ball Committee. The feud was so intense, both women were in an elevator and ignored each other--neither wanted to be the one to break the silence. As part of the way she "got even", Maxwell invited MM to the Ball. She and Arthur Miller were late (as always) and when the couple took seats at Elsa Maxwell's table, all the attention was drawn to Maxwell and her party. She delivered a knockout punch to the D of W which worse than if she had physically slapped her. I'll leave you the ref links for this juicy bit. Basically, if you got an invitation and were willing to pay the price per seat or table, anyone could be a guest at the Ball. (Have links for this too.) :) We hope (talk) 14:13, 17 January 2015 (UTC)
How do you know all this! links please!! Yeah just by the way it was worded I got a strong feeling she was primarily talking about Marilyn! Will go through some of the above sources later, I've finished going through the book I have now, although there's still one chap from the old days I need to go back and dig up something for.♦ Dr. Blofeld 14:21, 17 January 2015 (UTC)

I got the "dirt" by starting to read newspapers last night! :) We hope (talk) 14:25, 17 January 2015 (UTC)

A down payment. :) We hope (talk) 15:02, 17 January 2015 (UTC)

You've excelled yourself WH!!♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:29, 17 January 2015 (UTC)

Let me see what I have that you don't already! :) I agree with you re: the search engine, but it's better than the frustration I have with Google News Archive since they decided to stop adding to it. Many of the news clippings on the Red Skelton and Perry Como articles came out of there when it was working properly. Back then, you could search until you either found what you wanted or got tired of looking. I now feel I have to "beat" everything out of it by trying to determine the "magic words" to find what I'm looking for, as well as there being limits to the number of hits. The same is true for the Google Books search in magazines. With the musicians, I'd used Billboard a lot because the record companies published many trade ads in it. Now when I want to search, I'm not getting access to the right links or am cut off before I find what I want. :/ We hope (talk) 22:51, 17 January 2015 (UTC)
Found more to add but it will need to wait until morning. Located the series of articles Jim Bishop wrote that was published in the Salt Lake Tribune. It details how George Boldt was able to keep peace between the two cousins. We hope (talk) 06:07, 18 January 2015 (UTC)

Newbie

Hello Blofeld old bean, and happy new year to you. I didn't really want to stick my oar in, and don't intend to, but have done so accidentally. A newbie, User:Erica Blatt Harkins, has tried to make comments on my user talk page and Ygangdottir's, with little success (using the {{tb}} template wrongly some how). I have, I hope, welcomed her to Misplaced Pages. I have been technically naughty by editing her user page, but she said it was a mess, her first contribution should never have been on her user page and she didn't know how it got there out of the sandboy – that's fine, so I just kinda removed that from her user page (on the Queen of Aquitaine) and put some links and starts in, in the hope that it will get her started. I hope that is not too bad. Technically I shouldn't edit her user page but she needs a bit of help to get started so I hope overall I did the right thing.

So I noticed you also have [[http://en.wikipedia.org/search/?diff=642153678&oldid=642122346 also contributed at Y's talk page. I am sorry if I am sticking my oar in but I am sure that both Y, you and I are trying to encourage this user. I probably seem a bit harsh to the newbie but do not wish to, quite the opposite, want to encourage her to contribute.

So if I have kinda sounded harsh to her, I don't think so, but maybe better than I you can encourage and WP:Don't scare the newbies. You certainly haven't but I may have done.

Proposed deletion of Hotel Kandahar

The article Hotel Kandahar has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Article without reliable sources does not meet Misplaced Pages:Notability (organizations and companies) or WP:GNG. Aditional sources found are only passing mentions and do provide significant coverage of the subject.

While all constructive contributions to Misplaced Pages are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. Re:Al Smith, et. al.

Al Smith was at one time the Governor of New York State. He made an unsuccessful run for president against Herbert Hoover in 1928. One of the reasons for his defeat was that Smith was a Roman Catholic. While there is/was no law prohibiting Cathoics from the presidency, some factions of the population wrongly believed that if a Catholic was elected, the Pope would be running the US. The dinner has been a long-standing event in New York and is a "must attend" for any Democrat who hopes to run for president.

So far, I found this NYT article with some further background on Hardenbergh. BTW--I think April in Paris Ball would make a fun DYK, as the bit about Elsa Maxwell and MM vs the D of W would be a great hook! :) We hope (talk) 14:56, 18 January 2015 (UTC)

While looking for Hardenbergh, I found some pics of the artist painting the mural on the ceiling of the Grand Ballroom and 2 paintings which were on spandrels in the Astor Gallery. Have now just come upon some photos in an 1897 Scientific American which shows the Astoria under construction. Will start posting the files here. We hope (talk) 20:18, 18 January 2015 (UTC)

Most of the older news photos (before 1964) were either never copyrighted or not renewed. This one was taken by Associated Press, who never registered a copyright on it. ;) We hope (talk) 21:51, 18 January 2015 (UTC)

Waldorf-Astoria

As part of a general clean-up exercise, I (unusually) found I had to replace a dead link for the Vanity Fair article. I did notice, while skimming through the latter article, that while it mostly supports the article text, it doesn't fully do so. As I see the article is up for GA, you might want to take a look at this little aspect. Regards, NSH002 (talk) 11:37, 20 January 2015 (UTC)

@NSH002: not sure what you're referring to and what the problem is?♦ Dr. Blofeld 11:40, 20 January 2015 (UTC)

I don't have much time now, but would if necessary be happy to explain later. In the meantime, the relevant part of the (very long) VF article is on the fourth page, just compare it with the article text. I'm sure any decent GA reviwer would do the same. Regards, NSH002 (talk) 11:47, 20 January 2015 (UTC)
Compare what?? What fourth page?♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:04, 20 January 2015 (UTC)
I see someone else has already responded to this, but the point should be obvious. You are involved in developing an article to GA status, editing it heavily shortly before I posted the message above; it therefore strains credulity that you aren't (weren't) aware of my edit to the article, right at the top of the history at the time I posted on this page. In that edit – as part of a technical clean-up exercise – I replaced a dead link by a link to the (originally intended) Vanity Fair article, and corrected a technical error in the ref. I also took the trouble to check the source, firstly in order to check the ref, but also out of curiosity. The Vanity Fair article is very long, which is why it is split into 4 pages, with links at the bottom of each page to the other pages. Regards, NSH002 (talk) 18:37, 20 January 2015 (UTC)
Oh, OK, I hadn't noticed what you did, thanks for that.♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:40, 20 January 2015 (UTC)

Done The LP ref is also done but the rest has to wait until later today/tonight. :) We hope (talk) 14:00, 20 January 2015 (UTC)

Thank you for creating innumerable substantial missing articles, such as Musikhochschule Hannover, Johan van der Meer and John H. Dessauer, sometimes before I even ask - at least that's how it feels, - repeating: you are an awesome Wikipedian (18 March 2009, 9 May 2009)!

For your efforts in bringing Waldorf Astoria New York to GA. — Ssven2 03:47, 22 January 2015 (UTC)

Thanks Sven, a core article I think, nice to have some positive support. We hope also did a lot with finding images and some bits and pieces though.♦ Dr. Blofeld 10:03, 22 January 2015 (UTC)

Nice one, Blofeld. Did you see a 5 or 6 man effort get United States to GA the other day, an article that is viewed annually by 11 million people? I'm glad we beefed up Denmark Street to GA as it motivated me to at least go and grab a gig from the 12 Bar Club before it shut up shop. () Ritchie333 12:16, 23 January 2015 (UTC)
Thanks. I wasn't aware of the drive to get USA up to GA, should probably be locked once fully written.♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:32, 23 January 2015 (UTC)

Bekabad

Hello again! Can you help me cite Google Maps in this article as well? Actually, could you explain how you calculate distances on Google Maps? If I learn how to do it myself, I'll stop bothering you. Nataev 13:54, 22 January 2015 (UTC)

Just copy and paste the reference from one into the other. Click the link on the coordinates. Copy and paste the goole map url into it. in google maps click get directions or whatever and the option to add distances will come up.♦ Dr. Blofeld 14:00, 22 January 2015 (UTC)

Got it. Turns out it's a piece of cake. I was too lazy to find it out for myself. :) Thanks again! Nataev 07:26, 23 January 2015 (UTC)

Vivien Leigh

Copy/paste from my talk page: Hi User:Bzuk), I hope you didn't perceive my comment on the talk page in the way that my arch nemesis Sandy G did. I don't think there was anything arrogant or dismissive about it. I was just alarmed that SchroCat was going to give up on the article because of an infobox tiff and I know he has a book on its way which I think will really help it and am certain he'd greatly improve if allowed to edit it. Ideally I'd like you to come to an agreement and work together. Keep up the great work anyway!♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:09, 22 January 2015 (UTC)

How precious, you have an "arch nemesis"?! I fear that many of us, myself included, put waaay too much emphasis on what we do in this wikywackywonderland. I did some work on the Vivien Leigh article, and used the framework of the contemporary Elizabeth Taylor article as a bit of a model. Some other editors may not like infoboxes at all, and judging by the Lawrence Olivier article, have dispensed with them, in their entirety. There is no animosity to yourself or others and the Vivien Leigh article can only be improved with the contributions of others, as no one really owns or acts as gate keeper of articles. When a few other editors made some changes to the infobox, I concluded that a consensus for change was being generated, and "c'est la vie". FWiW Bzuk (talk) 18:49, 22 January 2015 (UTC)
Judy Garland and Bette Davis I think will be picked up on soon enough. Garland in particular needs a huge amount of work. I appreciate what Her Haughtiness does or did with FAs, but every encounter with her since 2006 has been a negative one and I think that says a lot.. What Sandy doesn't realise is that Schro could have a lot of valuable content to add to it and I was trying to (politely) suggest a way to let things proceed productively without conflict.♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:51, 22 January 2015 (UTC)

More honey than vinegar may have worked better in the talk string. Indicating that someone's work is "useless drivel", "trivial", "pointless" and "crap" is probably not the best way to establish collaboration. Then having someone come along to endorse and validate that type of incivil dialogue? FWiW Bzuk (talk) 21:10, 22 January 2015 (UTC)

And being monumentally arrogant in your response (pretty much a 'fuck you - I'm doing this and I don't give a toss what your opinion is') is certainly the way to drive others away muttering dark words about article ownership. As it is, the "useless drivel", "trivial", "pointless" and "crap" information you've decided to include in the box leaves more questions than it answers (twice-divorced Roman Catholic? She used to live in a cemetery?) Your loss, not mine, but next time, don't be so dismissive of other people's opinions just because they don't agree with your precious ones. - SchroCat (talk) 12:35, 23 January 2015 (UTC)
I'm staying out of it Bzuk, but I would like to see some agreement between you both!♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:31, 23 January 2015 (UTC)
