Corporate history
The company was founded in 1998 by Sarah Tourville and Brian Hamilton, the company's current chairman. Hamilton and Tourville started the company in a business incubator in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. Its second location was subsequently opened in New York City. Products and services
Sageworks pursues two distinct lines of business.
Software Subscriptions
Sageworks provides a software subscription services to its clients. As part of the service, Sageworks collects private company data supplied by its professional adviser customers without the explicit permission being obtained from the business owners.
To collect this data, Sageworks works with a number of large accounting firms and banks that feed data on their corporate clients. As a result, the data is biased toward larger firms.
Data Resale
It also repackages this data to create the Sageworks private company indicator, which shows private-company sales growth and profit margins. It also issues aggregate information about average profitability of private firms in various industries.
