== Unethical activity? == | |||
It was suggested that you are abusing your position and access to technology (notably, bots) to preserve Quora's reputation on Misplaced Pages. | |||
You should be aware of this. Your claims about Quora have been sharply questioned using sources at least as credible as those you cite. As an employee, you should be quite careful not to be caught involving yourself in stock price manipulations. As a Wikimedia Foundation employee, you should be quite careful not to be caught using one-shot account bots to do your dirty work. You could lose both jobs over this. | |||
Now perhaps you will attempt to censor the records, or trace the IP of this account, or whatever, but it won't matter. The letters will be sent to both boards and the paragraph explaining the suspicious editing and advocacy of a "near-unicorn" valuation for Quora. | |||
Even Jimmy Wales does not change things on his BLP that he strongly objects to. Given your deep COI you should not be advocating, and certainly not using bots. | |||
If someone else at Quora is using bots for this purpose, you should report them to Wikimedia Foundation immediately. Until you do, you're the prime suspect. | |||
No way this ends here. Be very careful, your career is on the line. Both boards (Wikimedia, Quora) will be notified if there is any more of this manipulation. | |||
Specifically, do not remove the POV tag from the Quora article or advocate its removal. Someone with a COI as deep as yours has nothing to offer on that. Your COI is too deep to be involved in the Quora article, and your dual position at Wikimedia and Quora may be seen as a manipulation in itself. That is, as part of a scheme by Quora to control how it's portrayed in social media. |

Disambiguation link notification for February 3
Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Misplaced Pages appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Insect farming, you added links pointing to the disambiguation pages National Geographic and PRI (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Replaceable fair use File:Screenshot of Evernote 5.png
Thanks for uploading File:Screenshot of Evernote 5.png. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Misplaced Pages. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the file description page and add the text
{{di-replaceable fair use disputed|<your reason>}}
below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing<your reason>
with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable. - On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.
Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).
If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Seraphimblade 22:50, 5 February 2014 (UTC)
March 2014 GAN Backlog Drive
It's that time again! Starting on March 1, there will be another GAN Backlog Drive! There will be several changes compared to previous drives:
- This drive will introduce a new component to it; a point system. In a nutshell, older nominations are worth more points than newer nominations. The top 3 participants who have the points will be awarded the Golden, Silver, or Bronze Misplaced Pages Puzzle Piece Trophy, respectively.
- Unlike the December 2013 Backlog Drive, earning an additional barnstar if you reached your goal has been removed.
- The allowance to have insufficient reviews has been lowered to 2 before being disqualified.
- An exception to the rule that all reviews must be completed before the deadline has been created.
Also, something that I thought I would share with all of you is that we raised $20.88 (USD) for the WMF in the December 2013 drive. It may not sound like a lot but considering that that was raised just because we reviewed articles, I would say that's pretty good! With that success, pledges can be made for the upcoming drive if you wish.
More info regarding the drive and full descriptions regarding the changes to this drive can be found on the the drive page. If you have any questions, feel free to leave a message on the drive talk page.
I look forward to your participation and hope that because of it, some day the backlog will be gone!

Hi Steven! As you may know, Rare breed (agriculture) is "Today's article for improvement". You wrote the lede for it on January 2010, but your text has now found its way to Google Books, where it serves as a blurb for a book on rare breeds that was published later that year. You are invited to join our discussion on this issue at on the article's talk page. Cheers! Madalibi (talk) 12:16, 10 March 2014 (UTC)

FYI
Hi Steven. Just wanted to drop you a note to say don't take comments like this too seriously - it's hyopcritical in the extreme. That user happens to be a sock of a banned en.wiki user - he is only still editting here in that new guise through the corruption and incompetence of various supposedly 'trusted' functionaries on this project. You've probably even heard of him, he's apparently still active on IRC etc, and likes to get involved in technical issues, even though he is completely clueless about it. For full details, speak to en.wiki abritrator Carcharoth (talk · contribs), he has all the evidence that proves he's a sock, and all the names of the functionaries invovled in covering it up. It's also pretty well covered on the badsite (as all the most serious en.wiki cover ups tend to be it seems). I've tried to find out why nothing is being done about his continued illegitimate presence here, but my efforts are being obstructed by those same functionaries. Maybe an WMF staffer would have more success in finding out what's going on down on the farm here at en.wiki - it's bad enough that you have to take largely uninformed flak from legit users each time you roll out new developments designed to improve WMF projects for the average joe, but to have to take it from banned users (whose bans were imposed in part for being clueless about technical matters), is surely too much, no? OER inquiry
Hi Steven Walling, I'm sending you this message because you're one of about 300 users who have recently edited an article in the umbrella category of open educational resources (OER) (or open education). In evaluating several projects we've been working on (e.g. the WIKISOO course and WikiProject Open), my colleague Pete Forsyth and I have wondered who chooses to edit OER-related articles and why. Regardless of whether you've taken the WIKISOO course yourself - and/or never even heard the term OER before - we'd be extremely grateful for your participation in this brief, anonymous survey before 27 April. No personal data is being collected. If you have any ideas or questions, please get in touch. My talk page awaits. Thanks for your support! - Sara FB (talk) 20:49, 23 April 2014 (UTC)

WikiProject Good articles Future GAN Backlog Drive
Hello everyone! Hope you've all been having a great summer!
TheQ Editor recently proposed the idea of having another Backlog Drive in either September/October or November/December of this year. For those of you who have participated in the past two drives you know I was the one who organized them, however, come September, this will be my most important year in school so I will not be able to coordinate this drive (if it happens). TheQ Editor has volunteered to be a coordinator for the drive. If any of you would like to co-coordinator, please notify TheQ Editor on his talk page.
If you would be interested in participating in a Backlog Drive sometime before the end of this year, please notify TheQ Editor. Also, make sure to specify what month(s) work best for you.
At the time this message was sent out, the backlog was at 520 nominations. Since May, the backlog has been steadily increasing and we are currently near an all time high. Even though the backlog will not disappear over one drive, this drive can lead to several others which will (hopefully) lead to the day where there is no longer a backlog.
As always, the more participants, the better, and everyone is encouraged to participate!

GA Cup
Hello everyone! We hope you have all been having a great summer!
As we all know, the recent GAN Backlog Drives have not had any big impact on the backlog. Because of that, me (Dom497), Figureskatingfan, and TheQ Editor have worked on an idea that could possibly finally put a dent into the massive backlog. Now, I will admit, the idea isn't entirely ours as we have took the general idea of the WikiCup and brought it over to WikiProject Good Articles. But anyways, here's what we have in mind:
For all of you that do not know what the WikiCup is, it is an annual competition between several editors to see who can get the most Good Articles, Featured Article's, Did You Know's, etc. Based of this, we propose to you the GA Cup. This competition will only focus on reviewing Good articles.
For more info on the proposal, click here. As a FYI, the proposal page is not what the final product will look like (if you do go ahead with this idea). It will look very similar to WikiCup's page(s).
The discussion for the proposal will take place here. Please let us know if you are interested, have any concerns, things to consider, etc.

WikiProject Good Articles - GA Cup
WikiProject Good articles is holding a new competition, the GA Cup, from October 1, 2014 - March 28, 2015. The Cup will be based on reviewing Good article nominations; for each review, points will be awarded with bonuses for older nominations, longer articles and comprehensive reviews. All participants will start off in one group and the highest scoring participants will go through to the second round. At the moment six rounds are planned, but this may change based on participant numbers. Some of you may ask: what is the purpose for a competition of this type? Currently, there is a backlog of about 500 unreviewed Good article nominations, almost an all time high. It is our hope that we can decrease the backlog in a fun way, through friendly competition. Everyone is welcome to join; new and old editors! Sign-ups will be open until October 15, 2014 so sign-up now! If you have any questions, take a look at the FAQ page and/or contact one of the four judges. Cheers from NickGibson3900, Dom497, TheQ Editor and Figureskatingfan. --MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 19:04, 15 September 2014 (UTC) To receive future GA Cup newsletter, please add your name to our mailing list. |

Interview for The Signpost
- This is being sent to you as a member of WikiProject Agriculture
The WikiProject Report would like to focus on WikiProject Agriculture for a Signpost article. This is an excellent opportunity to draw attention to your efforts and attract new members to the project. Would you be willing to participate in an interview? If so, here are the questions for the interview. Just add your response below each question and feel free to skip any questions that you don't feel comfortable answering. Multiple editors will have an opportunity to respond to the interview questions, so be sure to sign your answers. If you know anyone else who would like to participate in the interview, please share this with them. Thanks, Rcsprinter123 (consult) @ 09:25, 27 September 2014 (UTC)

standard of perfection
Thank you, Steven, for quality articles such as Sheep written with "infinite patience", for the List of Oregon birds with the American standard of perfection, for the invitation "Articles I started, which need your help", for your work at WM, for example steamlining infoboxes, - repeating: you are an awesome Wikipedian (10 July 2009)!

Hi, I undeleted WP:E3 as it's still in use according to Special:WhatLinksHere/Wikipedia:E3. Did you mean something else by "no longer in use"? Legoktm (talk) 02:22, 30 October 2014 (UTC)

SF edit-a-thons on March 7 and 8
ArtAndFeminism (3/7) and International Women's Day (3/8)! | |
---|---|
Dear fellow Wikipedian, In celebration of WikiWomen's History Month, the SF Bay Area Misplaced Pages community has two events in early March -- please consider attending! First, we have an ArtAndFeminism edit-a-thon, which will take place at the Kadist Art Foundation from 12 noon to 6pm on Saturday, March 7. We'll be one of many sites worldwide participating in this edit-a-thon on March 7th. So join us as we help improve Misplaced Pages's coverage of women artists and their works! Second, we will be celebrating International Women's Day with the International Women's Day edit-a-thon on Sunday, March 8 from 1pm to 5pm at the Wikimedia Foundation. Our editing focus will be on women, of course! I hope to see you there! Disambiguation link notification for March 9
Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Misplaced Pages appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Arbosana, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page CABI (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Invitation
Hello, Steven Walling,
The Editing team is asking for your help with VisualEditor. I am contacting you because you were one of the very first testers of VisualEditor, back in 2012 or early 2013. Please tell them what they need to change to make VisualEditor work better for you. The team has a list of top-priority problems, but they also want to hear about small problems. These problems may make editing less fun, take too much of your time, or be as annoying as a paper cut. The Editing team wants to hear about and try to fix these small things, too.

Unethical activity?
It was suggested on the Quora talk page that you are abusing your position and access to technology (notably, bots) to preserve Quora's reputation on Misplaced Pages.
