The incumbent, Democrat Phil Bredesen, is expected to run for re-election. As of June 15, Bredesen has an approval rating of 62%. The frontrunner to challenge him is Republican state senator Jim Bryson of Franklin. Another Republican candidate, Albertini, was arrested in Knoxville on July 21, 2006, on charges of public intoxication.
