The WikiChevrons with Oak Leaves  By the order of the coordinators of the Military history WikiProject, Parsecboy, Cam, TheEd17, Dank, and Saberwyn are hereby awarded this Chevron with Oak Leaves award for the roles that each played in assisting with the creation of the 63-article Featured Topic Battlecruisers of the World. Since each of you have an equal claim to an award for the years long effort that they put into the total project by working on their corner of it and each of you has made contributions of truly incredible quality or importance in the area of military history, culminating in the completing the single largest FT to date on Misplaced Pages and passing a milestone by bringing an entire classification of ships - battlecruisers in this case - up to GA-Class, A-Class, or FA-Class. WikiCup 2015 is just around the corner...

Hello everyone, and may we wish you all a happy holiday season. As you will probably already know, the 2015 WikiCup begins in the new year; there is still time to sign up. We have a few important announcements concerning the future of the WikiCup.

• We would like to announce that Josh (J Milburn) and Ed (The ed17), who have been WikiCup judges since 2009 and 2010 respectively, are stepping down. This decision has been made for a number of reasons, but the main one is time. Both Josh and Ed have found that, over the previous year, they have been unable to devote the time necessary to the WikiCup, and it is not likely that they will be able to do this in the near future. Furthermore, new people at the helm can only help to invigorate the WikiCup and keep it dynamic. Josh and Ed will still be around, and will likely be participating in the Cup this following year as competitors, which is where both started out.
• In a similar vein, we hope you will all join us in welcoming Jason (Sturmvogel 66) and Christine (Figureskatingfan), who are joining Brian (Miyagawa) to form the 2015 WikiCup judging team. Jason is a WikiCup veteran, having won in 2010 and finishing in fifth this year. Christine has participated in two WikiCups, reaching the semi-finals in both, and is responsible for the GA Cup, which she now co-runs.
• The discussions/polls concerning the next competition's rules will be closed soon, and rules changes will be made clear on Misplaced Pages:WikiCup/Scoring and talk pages. While it may be impossible to please everyone, the judges will make every effort to ensure that the new rules are both fair and in the best interests of the competition, which is, first and foremost, about improving Misplaced Pages.

We hope you will all join us in trying to make the 2015 WikiCup the most productive and enjoyable yet. December 2014 GOCE newsletter

Guild of Copy Editors December 2014 Newsletter Drive: Thanks to everyone who participated in November's Backlog Elimination Drive. Of the 43 people who signed up for this drive, 26 copy edited at least one article. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here. Progress report: The November Drive removed 26 requests from the Requests page and 509 articles from the {{copy edit}} backlog. We copy edited 83 articles tagged in the target months; July, August, and September 2013. Together with tag removals from articles unsuitable for copy editing, we eliminated July 2013 from the backlog and reduced August and September's tags to 61 and 70 respectively. As of 01:01, 1 December 2014 (UTC), the backlog stood at 1,974 articles, dipping below 2,000 for the first time in the Guild's history (see graph at right). Well done everyone! Blitz: The December Blitz will run from December 14–20 and will focus on articles related to Religion, in recognition of this month's religious holidays in much of the English-speaking world. Awards will be given out to everyone who copy edits at least one of the target articles. Sign up here! Election time again: The election of coordinators to serve from 1 January to 30 June 2015 is now underway. Out of process CfD close

It is very inappropriate to close a CFD discussion early especially when the close is the opposite of consensus! I'm not going to get into an issue over WP:WHEEL here, but you really do need to reopen that discussion per WP:WHEEL since I believe that your revert is in violation. @Vegaswikian: Wheel war? I'm not using administrator tools there? Anyway, I'm closing it for overall benefit to the encyclopedia. As WP:FATRAT says, "In building consensus, everyone will argue that such or such change breaks their preferred rule and thus simply *can't* be made. It's a good time to apply the WP:Ignore all rules policy and focus on how the proposed change makes the article better regardless of what the rules say." This isn't an article but is in the same spirit. Process should not derail the mission. Ed  03:24, 17 December 2014 (UTC)

(edit conflict)@Vegaswikian: That was an inappropriate CFD: those categories are entirely reasonable, standard maintenance categories. Any and all projects, whether Task forces as part of a larger project, or independent WikiProjects, require those in order to use WP:1.0 assessment. I would have done a speedy close myself if I had seen one or two voices confirming my sense of the discussion, Sadads (talk) 03:29, 17 December 2014 (UTC)

Closings are generally done by an admin at CfD, so while no powers, it is generally viewed as an admin action. In any case, since you are leaving the close, you should remove the entry made after the discussion was closed! Vegaswikian (talk) 18:11, 17 December 2014 (UTC)

VisualEditor newsletter—December 2014

Did you know?

Basic table editing is now available in VisualEditor. You can add and remove rows and columns from existing tables at the click of a button.

The user guide has more information about how to use VisualEditor.

Since the last newsletter, the Editing Team has fixed many bugs and worked on table editing and performance. Their weekly status reports are posted on Mediawiki.org. Upcoming plans are posted at the VisualEditor roadmap.

VisualEditor was deployed to several hundred remaining wikis as an opt-in beta feature at the end of November, except for most Wiktionaries (which depend heavily upon templates) and all Wikisources (which await integration with ProofreadPage).

Recent improvements

Basic support for editing tables is available. You can insert new tables, add and remove rows and columns, set or remove a caption for a table, and merge cells together. To change the contents of a cell, double-click inside it. More features will be added in the coming months. In addition, VisualEditor now ignores broken, invalid rowspan and colspan elements, instead of trying to repair them.

You can now use find and replace in VisualEditor, reachable through the tool menu or by pressing ⌃ Ctrl+F or ⌘ Cmd+F.

You can now create and edit simple <blockquote> paragraphs for quoting and indenting content. This changes a "Paragraph" into a "Block quote".

Some new keyboard sequences can be used to format content. At the start of the line, typing "*  " will make the line a bullet list; "1.  " or "# " will make it a numbered list; "==" will make it a section heading; ": " will make it a blockquote. If you didn't mean to use these tools, you can press undo to undo the formatting change. There are also two other keyboard sequences: "[[" for opening the link tool, and "{{" for opening the template tool, to help experienced editors. The existing standard keyboard shortcuts, like ⌃ Ctrl+K to open the link editor, still work.

If you add a category that has been redirected, then VisualEditor now adds its target. Categories without description pages show up as red.

You can again create and edit galleries as wikitext code.

Looking ahead

VisualEditor will replace the existing design with a new theme designed by the User Experience group. The new theme will be visible for desktop systems at MediaWiki.org in late December and at other sites early January. (You can see a developer preview of the old "Apex" theme and the new "MediaWiki" one which will replace it.)

The Editing team plans to add auto-fill features for citations in January. Planned changes to the media search dialog will make choosing between possible images easier.

• Translations of the user guide for most languages are oudated. Ukrainian, Portuguese, Spanish, French, and Dutch translators are nearly current. Please help complete the current translations for users who speak your language.
• Talk to the Editing team during the office hours via IRC. The next session is on Wednesday, 7 January 2015 at 22:00 UTC.
• File requests for language-appropriate "Bold" and "Italic" icons for the character formatting menu in Phabricator.
• The design research team wants to see how real editors work. Please sign up for their research program.

Template:WW2InfoBox

Hi Ed, I just noticed that when you move protected Template:WW2InfoBox in April you also lifted the protection against IP accounts editing it which I instituted for a indefinite period in March. As I suspect this was an accident, I've just reinstated this protection (I considered leaving things as-is, but it's a template with few watchers which directly affects the very popular World War II article and vandalism in the past has been slowly corrected). Wikicup

Can I just say that I'm really glad you had no part in the new rules? Because I respect you, but the giant middle finger of a no-consensus change to FP scoring, combined with a not-even-discussed one FP per article rule is such a giant fuck you to an entire class of contributors... WikiCup 2015 launch newsletter

Round one of the 2015 WikiCup has begun! So far we've had around 80 signups, which close on February 5. If you have not already signed up and want to do so, then you can add your name here. There have been changes to to several of the points scores for various categories, and the addition of Peer Reviews for the first time. These will work in the same manner as Good Article Reviews, and all of the changes are summarised here.

Remember that only the top 64 scoring competitors will make it through to the second round, and one of the new changes this year is that all scores must be claimed within two weeks of an article's promotion or appearance, so don't forget to add them to your submissions pages! If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Misplaced Pages:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAN, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Misplaced Pages talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! Hi User:The ed17, I'm not sure if you're the right person to talk to about this, so I apologize in advance for noise. I'm hoping to get an article into the signpost and you've helped me do that in the past. See m:Research:Revision_scoring_as_a_service for more details. We're looking to summarize the project and welcome volunteers. TL;DR: we're working to build a cross-lingual, machine learning classifier service for edits that will support new wikitools that need edit quality measures (e.g. WP:Snuggle, User:HostBot, WP:Huggle and User:ClueBot NG). --20:30, 15 January 2015 (UTC)

Sure. I'll take another pass. Just to make sure I understand, is your feedback only "what are you talking about?" Did you understand that we're building a service for scoring revisions as damaging or not? Was it clear to you that this is something that tools like ClueBot, Huggle and Snuggle need in order to function? Was it clear that we'll be providing a web service as well as libraries? Maybe we should spend a little bit of time discussing what machine classification is. Do you have other questions after reading the piece that I can make sure to address? Ed, as you can notice on my talk page Adan Cuerden took a Wiki-break over a controversy about a picture of Pedro he intended to nominate that was remobved from the article. I am kind of paniking, because he was the head-editor on the FP Signpost entry. I have no idea how to put up a draft - where information is - no idea of anything. He made the draft and put that on my page while we worked together. Tell me now what to do. I don't know how long he will be gone and everything will stop without him. NHHC dead links

Re: Your post on the WikiProject Military history talk page. You mentioned that you were going to contact someone at NHHC by email. Was there any response and did anything come of it? Just curious. @Cuprum17: I sent emails last weekend to the NHHC's web program master and the general NHHCWebmasternavy.mil. Neither have garnered a response. Ed  18:21, 24 January 2015 (UTC)

Perhaps their schedules were thrown off because of last weeks federal holiday...or maybe they just don't feel that it is their problem. I work with mostly Coast Guard subject matter on Misplaced Pages and about four years ago the Coast Guard decided to reformat the way things were addressed, changing from .htm to .asp (whatever that means). The result was dozens of dead links in Coast Guard related articles. As I have run across them I have repaired them as I was able, but many are still out there in other less well read Coast Guard articles. Thanks for your reply, perhaps the Navy will reply to you with something positive. The one Good Article that I have been able to produce in the last couple of years has 33 dead citations in it. (I have not marked them all, yet). I guess I will spend my time repairing them so that the article doesn't lose its GA status. I would have much rather spent my time doing research on another article or perhaps even trying my hand at bringing that same GA article to an ACR, a first for me. Oh, well... Hi, the NHHC wrote me that the old links were all deactivated and the new website is slowly materializing. It contains a lot of mistakes, dead links and missing descriptions, however. Maybe they are just nice to foreigners... :-) :-) :-) I think it is nice to have tif-versions of the photos, although I would have preferred, if they would have waited until the complete old website was converted. I also think that an experienced user or more one that knows a lot about U.S. Navy ships does not want to "explore", we just want to find what we are looking for. USS Aroostook

Hi, I just realised that you created a page for USS Aroostook (AOG-14) on Commons in 2011. The ship depicted is, however, the minelayer USS Aroostook (CM-3), and not MV Esso Delivery No. 11, which became the gasoline tanker USS Aroostook (AOG-14) in 1943. The NARA description is wrong. CM-3 was decommissioned in 1931 and never reactivated. She was the sistership of USS Oglala (CM-4), famous for being sunk and raised at Pearl Harbor. VisualEditor News 2015—#1

Since the last newsletter, the Editing Team has fixed many bugs and worked on VisualEditor's appearance, the coming Citoid reference service, and support for languages with complex input requirements. Status reports are posted on Mediawiki.org. Upcoming plans are posted at the VisualEditor roadmap.

The Wikimedia Foundation has named its top priorities for this quarter (January to March). The first priority is making VisualEditor ready for deployment by default to all new users and logged-out users at the remaining large Wikipedias. You can help identify these requirements. There will be weekly triage meetings which will be open to volunteers beginning Wednesday, 11 February 2015 at 12:00 (noon) PST (20:00 UTC). Tell Vice President of Engineering Damon Sicore, Product Manager James Forrester and other team members which bugs and features are most important to you. The decisions made at these meetings will determine what work is necessary for this quarter's goal of making VisualEditor ready for deployment to new users. The presence of volunteers who enjoy contributing MediaWiki code is particularly appreciated. Information about how to join the meeting will be posted at mw:Talk:VisualEditor/Portal shortly before the meeting begins. 

Due to some breaking changes in MobileFrontend and VisualEditor, VisualEditor was not working correctly on the mobile site for a couple of days in early January. The teams apologize for the problem.

Recent improvements

The new design for VisualEditor aligns with MediaWiki's Front-End Standards as led by the Design team. Several new versions of the OOjs UI library have also been released, and these also affect the appearance of VisualEditor and other MediaWiki software extensions. Most changes were minor, like changing the text size and the amount of white space in some windows. Buttons are consistently color-coded to indicate whether the action:

• starts a new task, like opening the ⧼visualeditor-toolbar-savedialog⧽ dialog:  blue ,
• takes a constructive action, like inserting a citation:  green ,
• might remove or lose your work, like removing a link:  red , or
• is neutral, like opening a link in a new browser window:  gray.

The TemplateData editor has been completely re-written to use a different design (T67815) based on the same OOjs UI system as VisualEditor (T73746). This change fixed a couple of existing bugs (T73077 and T73078) and improved usability.

Search and replace in long documents is now faster. It does not highlight every occurrence if there are more than 100 on-screen at once (T78234).

Editors at the Hebrew and Russian Wikipedias requested the ability to use VisualEditor in the "Article Incubator" or drafts namespace (T86688, T87027). If your community would like VisualEditor enabled on another namespace on your wiki, then you can file a request in Phabricator. Please include a link to a community discussion about the requested change.

Looking ahead

The Editing team will soon add auto-fill features for citations. The Citoid service takes a URL or DOI for a reliable source, and returns a pre-filled, pre-formatted bibliographic citation. After creating it, you will be able to change or add information to the citation, in the same way that you edit any other pre-existing citation in VisualEditor. Support for ISBNs, PMIDs, and other identifiers is planned. Later, editors will be able to contribute to the Citoid service's definitions for each website, to improve precision and reduce the need for manual corrections.

We will need editors to help test the new design of the special character inserter, especially if you speak Welsh, Breton, or another language that uses diacritics or special characters extensively. The new version should be available for testing next week. Please contact User:Whatamidoing (WMF) if you would like to be notified when the new version is available. After the special character tool is completed, VisualEditor will be deployed to all users at Phase 5 Wikipedias. This will affect about 50 mid-size and smaller Wikipedias, including Afrikaans, Azerbaijani, Breton, Kyrgyz, Macedonian, Mongolian, Tatar, and Welsh. The date for this change has not been determined.

February 2015 GOCE newsletter

Guild of Copy Editors February 2015 Newsletter Drive: Thanks to everyone who participated in January's Backlog Elimination Drive. Georgios Averof

I'm working on the Template:Sclass- article and have one source that says Brazil originally committed to buy the ship that became Georgios Averof, but later reneged. This would have been around 1909 and so not exactly unparalleled behavior by them, but I don't think I've ever seen anything about any Brazilian armored cruiser purchases. I'm only really familiar with their BBs, though. You know anything about this, possibly as a reaction to the Argentinian purchase of all those Garibaldi-class armored cruisers a few years earlier?--Sturmvogel 66 (talk) 21:37, 18 February 2015 (UTC)

Hey Sturmvogel 66, sorry about the slow reply—I didn't catch your post with the Wikimedia highlights (below) arriving so soon after. Who's saying that? I've never seen anyone even speculating about Brazil's desire for an armored cruiser, and I've looked through all of the Brazilian Navy-related Times and NY Times articles from 1907–10, many of which were wildly speculative (but none about the Pisas). Furthermore, I can't imagine why Brazil would want the ship. First, they changed their minds on ordering armored cruisers and went with dreadnoughts in 1907. Second, their first two dreadnoughts were not even a year away for most of 1909 (Minas Geraes was handed over to the Brazilians on 5 January 1910, and Sao Paolo followed in July), and they were or had just finished trying to get out of the contractually obligated third. Third, they wanted to be seen as an international power. Buying a ship with an outmoded design doesn't mesh with that goal.

Now, all that being said... could your source be mistaken? I could certainly see Argentina at least inquiring into the ship, given their alarm at the rapidly approaching delivery date of the Brazilian dreadnoughts, and they certainly had a history with Italian shipbuilders (very recent history, if you remember that they bid for the Argentine dreadnoughts). My source for this is a biography of Averof by a non-naval-specialist historian, so I think that it's quite safe to say that he's mistaken. The laid down date alone, four(!) after her sisters', reinforces the account in Conways that says she was built in advance of any order. WikiCup 2015 March newsletter

That's it, the first round is done, sign-ups are closed and we're into round 2. 64 competitors made it into this round, and are now broken into eight groups of eight. The top two of each group will go through to round 3, and then the top scoring 16 "wildcards" across all groups. Round 1 saw some interesting work on some very important articles, with the round leader Freikorp (submissions) owing most of his 622 points scored to a Featured Article on the 2001 film Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within which qualified for a times-two multiplier. This is a higher score than in previous years, as Godot13 (submissions) had 500 points in 2014 at the end of round 1, and our very own judge, Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) led round 1 with 601 points in 2013.

In addition to Freikorp's work, some other important articles and pictures were improved during round one, here's a snapshot of a few of them:

• Cwmhiraeth (submissions) took Bumblebee, a level-4 vital article, to Good Article;
• AHeneen (submissions) worked-up the Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 article, also to Good Article status;
• Rodw (submissions) developed an extremely timely article to Good Article, taking Magna Carta there some 800 years after it was first sealed;
• And last but not least, Godot13 (submissions) (FP bonus points) worked up a number of Featured Pictures during round 1, including the 1948 one Deutsche Mark (pictured right), receiving the maximum bonus due to the number of Wikis that the related article appears in.

NYT lookup

IIRC, you've got access to the NYT archives and I don't so I'd appreciate it if you could do me a small favor whenever you get a chance. I need cites for the voyage of Crown Prince Umberto to South America aboard the Italian armored cruisers San Marcos and San Giorgio in July-Sep 1924 so I can upgrade those articles. Since it's post '23 I can't access it myself, but the NYT seems to be one of the few newspapers that bother to note the voyage at all as I struck out with the Australian and UK newspaper archives.

Also, if you can recommend any sources on the Argentinian Template:Sclass- armored cruisers, that would be great. I need to finish off my good topic on Italian armored cruisers and I can't do it without taking the class article to GA, which, of course, means mini-histories of the foreign ships in the class as well the Italian ones which I've already researched. Do you recall what articles you saw? I can't find anything on Umberto's voyage. I'm using varying combinations of "Umberto San Marco," "Umberto San Giorgio," "Umberto Argentina," "Umberto cruiser," and "Umberto warship" and not getting anything beyond a Christian Science Monitor article of 1923 announcing that he plans to make a trip.

The Argentine ships are woefully undercovered, something that isn't helped by the Argentine Navy's neglect of its history (there's no official webpages for their historical ships, only their current ones). Whitney's Cruisers of World War II might be your best bet; the only other substantial source I know of, excluding Spanish-language books, is HistArMar: . I've been able use a similar Portuguese-language site for the Brazilian ships. Ed  04:59, 2 March 2015 (UTC)

Try Humbert or Humberto as that's English version of his name. Thanks for the pointers on the Argentine ships, I'll run them through Google and see what comes out. I've been doing that with the Italian wiki of late and it's proved reasonably competent, rather to my surprise since my experience with its Russian translations has been rather poor. @Sturmvogel 66: I'd say so. It's the website of the Histarmar Foundation, a "a Buenos Aires-based non-profit organization aimed at locating, identifying, preserving and exhibiting Argentine maritime heritage." It's website is, at least according to them, an "internationally recognized reference link." See this PDF. It's not just a random personal website, despite the frankly ancient design.

Jimmy Wales, the founder of Misplaced Pages

Your recent Signpost interview with FergusM1970 leads in with a question saying, "Jimmy Wales, the founder of Misplaced Pages". You don't honestly believe that, do you? I hope that was just a typo (where "a co-founder" would have been most accurate). The current wording is highly offensive to anyone who knows and respects Dr. Larry Sanger, who promoted the idea of a wiki encyclopedia to Jimmy Wales, with Sanger also naming the project "Misplaced Pages" and issuing the first public call for participation on the project. Hello! I'd like to request unprotection from Yamato-class battleship, it currently has pending changes protection for the reason "trial run", which you added in March of 2013. @Hafspajen: The discussion was moved to here. I think we're misunderstanding each other here. While I could have looked at it the day before and started a discussion about it, most of the content I had a problem with wasn't there at that time. By the time I noticed it, we were publishing.

As for your questions, I don't know how I or Drmies can answer them any better... I'm off to bed, but I'll check for any replies when I wake up. • Ed, thank you for telling me the discussion wasn't wiped out. At least. Second - nobody did answered the question. The only thing you or someone else told me was that an unknown woman thought it was sexist, without even knowing the context. Now try to do an experiment. Try to think this: you are a person that is trying to cheer up Misplaced Pages. You also worked hard for it. Maybe you have a background in a relationship that involved an older woman and a younger man - and it was terrific - better than any other relationship you ever had. Try, come on, now. Go on, and still try - to understand how this relationship went down the drain because of all the sexist comments from friends, family, parents, strangers etc. Go on now, keeping all this in mind - and still try to understand - you suddenly read a similar story that was not destroyed by any stupid sexist comment but succeed - and succeed well. Feeling sentimental, you just want to say to the world: But, yes, it can work! You see, here it is the proof. People did managed it, where you failed. Also, you are writing a page that it supposed to be funny. Hey, you just want to tell people not to have prejudices.

Ah, but next time you are logged in somebody is telling you that all is removed and you were making a sexist comment doing this. You might even perceive it as they might tell you were sexist - easy thing to (mis)-understand under these conditions. And the rest you know. Hey, maybe you will not feel so great after this. Revisiting the pop culture sections for the Iowa class battleships

If you like I'd be open to revisiting the idea with the community to see if they have a different opinion now then they did a few years back. Also, I'd like to visit the idea of renaming the ship articles since Parsecboy recently moved several ships from USS (Name) (classification) to USS (Name) on grounds that they didn't need dab links for a single named ship. Blocked Vandal Returning Yet Again

Hi, I think Christina1969 has returned to edit again, despite her block, as the ip 89.134.20.238 (talk · tag · contribs · filter log · WHOIS · RBLs · proxy check · block user · block log · cross-wiki contribs · CheckUser (log)). The new IP's edits and edit summaries recall Christina1969's edits and edit summaries, and the ip even restored the "In Popular Culture Section" in Kaprosuchus, which I had deleted for being unreferenced and irrelevant (in that, Christina1969 had previously restored it when she was using ip 89.134.28.154).--Mr Fink (talk) 14:37, 3 April 2015 (UTC)

VisualEditor News #2—2015

With Citoid in VisualEditor, you click the 'book with bookmark' icon and paste in the URL for a reliable source:

Citoid looks up the source for you and returns the citation results. Click the green "Insert" button to accept its results and add them to the article:

After inserting the citation, you can change it. Select the reference, and click the "Edit" button in the context menu to make changes.

The user guide has more information about how to use VisualEditor.

Since the last newsletter, the Editing Team has fixed many bugs and worked on VisualEditor's performance, the Citoid reference service, and support for languages with complex input requirements. Status reports are posted on Mediawiki.org. The worklist for April through June is available in Phabricator.

The weekly task triage meetings continue to be open to volunteers, each Wednesday at 11:00 (noon) PDT (18:00 UTC). You do not need to attend the meeting to nominate a bug for consideration as a Q4 blocker. Instead, go to Phabricator and "associate" the Editing team's Q4 blocker project with the bug. Recent improvements

VisualEditor is now substantially faster. In many cases, opening the page in VisualEditor is now faster than opening it in the wikitext editor. The new system has improved the code speed by 37% and network speed by almost 40%.

The Editing team is slowly adding auto-fill features for citations. This is currently available only at the French, Italian, and English Wikipedias. The Citoid service takes a URL or DOI for a reliable source, and returns a pre-filled, pre-formatted bibliographic citation. After creating it, you will be able to change or add information to the citation, in the same way that you edit any other pre-existing citation in VisualEditor. Support for ISBNs, PMIDs, and other identifiers is planned. Later, editors will be able to improve precision and reduce the need for manual corrections by contributing to the Citoid service's definitions for each website.

Citoid requires good TemplateData for your citation templates. If you would like to request this feature for your wiki, please post a request in the Citoid project on Phabricator. Include links to the TemplateData for the most important citation templates on your wiki.

The special character inserter has been improved, based upon feedback from active users. After this, VisualEditor was made available to all users of Wikipedias on the Phase 5 list on 30 March. This affected 53 mid-size and smaller Wikipedias, including Afrikaans, Azerbaijani, Breton, Kyrgyz, Macedonian, Mongolian, Tatar, and Welsh.

Work continues to support languages with complex requirements, such as Korean and Japanese. These languages use input method editors ("IMEs”). Recent improvements to cursoring, backspace, and delete behavior will simplify typing in VisualEditor for these users.

The design for the image selection process is now using a "masonry fit" model. Images in the search results are displayed at the same height but at variable widths, similar to bricks of different sizes in a masonry wall, or the "packed" mode in image galleries. This style helps you find the right image by making it easier to see more details in images.

You can now drag and drop categories to re-arrange their order of appearance ​on the page.

The pop-up window that appears when you click on a reference, image, link, or other element, is called the "context menu". It now displays additional useful information, such as the destination of the link or the image's filename. The team has also added an explicit "Edit" button in the context menu, which helps new editors open the tool to change the item.

Invisible templates are marked by a puzzle piece icon so they can be interacted with. Users also will be able to see and edit HTML anchors now in section headings.

Users of the TemplateData GUI editor can now set a string as an optional text for the 'deprecated' property in addition to boolean value, which lets you tell users of the template what they should do instead (T90734).

Looking ahead

The special character inserter in VisualEditor will soon use the same special character list as the wikitext editor. Admins at each wiki will also have the option of creating a custom section for frequently used characters at the top of the list. Instructions for customizing the list will be posted at mediawiki.org.

The team is discussing a test of VisualEditor with new users, to see whether they have met their goals of making VisualEditor suitable for those editors. The timing is unknown, but might be relatively soon.

A new reference tool

Hello Books & Bytes subscribers. There is a new Visual Editor reference feature in development called Citoid. It is designed to "auto-fill" references using a URL or DOI. Perhaps using "troll" was a bit strong, and a dispassionate reading of events would show that both sides did not acquit themselves well there, but talking about another editor shooting cats is (as I said) incredibly inappropriate in any context. Ed  22:22, 13 April 2015 (UTC)

The word "troll" is thrown around far too loosely on this site, and is best reserved for particular editors who have an agenda to disrupt. Haffy, I'm sure, is not one of them. Haffy doesn't have the best grasp of the English language, but he/she does their best; I'm sure they didn't mean anything by it. It's a shame, as we appear to have now waved them off of the encyclopaedia for good. Nothing good ever comes out of disputes like this in my experience. Cassianto 22:49, 13 April 2015 (UTC)

• I respectfully suggest that another "dispassionate reading" is undertaken: what Hafs was trying to type was "... and start shouting at people because their cat died." I cannot see anything that can remotely be construed as "another editor shooting cats" that is stated above. The only thing that is "incredibly inappropriate" is the amount of upset that has (again) been caused to Hafs - s/he is passionate about Misplaced Pages, gentle and very intelligent; English is not their native language but, as Cass says, s/he does her/his best and s/he certainly manages far better than I could in another language. Lately, s/he has been falsely accused of making sexist comments, being a troll, childish, causing "3 months of drama and non stop aggression" and "months of passive aggressive and intentional attacks" without any diffs being supplied. • Ed, well, yes it would help. Your calling Hafs a troll is one of reasons Hafs is so upset, and since it is not true, perhaps apologizing to Hafs would help calm him/her down and persuade him/her to return to editing. It's also true that no one came to Hafs' defense while the other editor continued his attacks. Regarding changing "shoting to "shooting", I have seen many instances of Hafs typing a message, probably quickly, and posting it full of spelling errors, and then going back in and correcting the spelling of some of the words, with some of those corrected spellings still wrong. How would you spell Swedish or French if you were in a hurry and upset on top of that? Hafs has never said a mean word to anyone. I don't think that misspelling was a deliberate act. Hafs is without a doubt one of the most knowledgeable editors on WP. S/He is an expert in art history, landscape architecture, botany, and religion.
