Career

2015: The Voice

Koryn Hawthorne auditioned for the eighth season of The Voice singing Emeli Sandé's "My Kind of Love". Both Christina Aguilera and Pharrell Williams turned around. Hawthorne chose Christina Aguilera as her coach. At the Battle rounds, Hawthorne faced R&B singer Vance Smith, where they sang "Love Me Harder", a duet by Ariana Grande and The Weeknd. Hawthorne was chosen over Smith, and in the process advanced to the Knockout rounds. During the Knockouts, she covered "Try", but lost this round to her opponent, Kimberly Nichole. She was then stolen by Pharrell Williams. During the Playoffs she sang the Christian hymn How Great Thou Art but was not chosen by America, who could only save two artists from Pharrell Williams team. Pharrell, who could only save one of his three remaining artists, decided to go with Hawthorne, who then advanced to the Live shows. The following week, she sang Kelly Clarkson's "Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You)" and was saved by public voting. In top 10 she performed "Make It Rain" by Ed Sheeran, reaching #3 on iTunes and debuting at #84 on Hot 100.

The following week, Hawthorne covered "Girl on Fire" by Alicia Keys, and was saved by the public. In the top 6 Live shows, she showed her rock side covering R.E.M's "Everybody Hurts" and Aerosmith's "Dream On", advancing to the next week's live shows. After singing U2's "One" and Christian music popularized by Aretha Franklin "Oh Mary Don't You Weep", Hawthorne was, alongside Voice mate India Carney, in the bottom 2. She sang Beyonce's "If I Were a Boy" for her last chance performance, being instantly saved over Carney. Koryn Hawthorne then headed to the finale. She performed "It's a Man's Man's Man's World" by funk singer James Brown and also her original song "Bright Fire", written by her coach Pharrell Williams. Hawthorne finished in 4th place.

Throughout the competition, Hawthorne's evolution as a singer caught the attention from all the coaches. Adam Levine pointed out that never before, in the history of The Voice, has he seen "such a drastic, incredible, unbelievable journey". Pharrell Williams compared Hawthorne and her drive to succeed to R&B and pop singer Beyoncé.

Abbeville Mayor Mark Piazza declared May 6, 2015 “Koryn Hawthorne Day” in Abbeville and presented her with the key to the city.
