Project title

I fear that the project title is ambiguous. Our Western New York article is a mess because of this inherent ambiguity. Powers 01:51, 27 August 2012 (UTC)

  • Considering the fact that this project was only created a week ago, there hasn't really been a lot of time allotted to improving or looking over the top-priority article. Obviously our project will be devoting much time to Western New York in the coming days and weeks, and if you would like to join you are more than welcome. --Dekema2 (talk) 19:52, 27 August 2012 (UTC)
    • I think you misunderstood my point. While the article I linked is indeed in bad shape, I was using it as an illustration of a deeper problem. That is, specifically, what is the scope of this project? Buffalonians tend to take a more restrictive view of what constitutes "Western New York" than, say, Rochesterians. I was invited to participate in this project because I edit Rochester-area articles... but this page mentions only Buffalo and Niagara Falls. Is Rochester included? Batavia? Geneva? Corning? Syracuse? Jamestown? Powers 00:11, 28 August 2012 (UTC)
So in a nutshell, you're interested in my opinion, but you really don't care what my opinion is. Seems contradictory to me. However, I really don't care what subprojects of WP:NY decide to do with their scopes. My main focus is on WP:NYSR, and has been for quite a long time.
Like LtPowers, I'm not interested in a WNY project if it doesn't cover the Genesee Valley. – TMF (talk) 23:58, 28 August 2012 (UTC)

I just noticed this wikiproject from one of TwinsMetsFan's helpful Talk page edits. I'm afraid there is not a quorum of interested editors to keep an active project going. I'd prefer to merge the WikiProject Syracuse, mostly dormant but where i was/am a major participant, into a larger Western and Central New York WikiProject, and for it to even include the Southern tier and the Northern counties, i.e. everything outside the other upstate wikiprojects. Or to return to using WikiProject New York, which I think has had no recent activity at all. None of these have enough activity, IMHO, including the Hudson Valley one wp:HVNY and the Capital District onewp:CDNY. Anyhow, to head off further fragmentation, how about expand to central and southern tier and northern New York areas? --doncram 23:56, 26 November 2012 (UTC)

I don't think there's any benefit to a wide-reaching task force that merges largely unrelated areas of the state together. That said, I'm not opposed to the creation of separate task forces for the Southern Tier and North Country.
As for this particular project, it is probably better off as a WNY taskforce of WPNY - like I commented recently at the parent project, this project has had next to no activity since it was created. The vast majority of efforts made on behalf of this project have been by "outsiders", such as myself. Sure, I'm from the region, but I worked on the project page and took care of assessment on behalf of WPNY.
Finally, the Syracuse project is also probably better off as a retooled project or task force covering all of CNY, since covering just Onondaga County is a bit of a narrow scope. That's a discussion for another page, though. – TMF (talk) 20:43, 4 December 2012 (UTC)

Article assessment in relation to WPNY

See Misplaced Pages talk:WikiProject New York#Article tagging in relation to subprojects. – TMF (talk) 21:11, 17 October 2012 (UTC)

Banner

Why does the project banner image only show the westernmost seven counties? Is the scope of this project still ambiguous? Powers 02:23, 7 January 2013 (UTC)

The scope seems to be adequately defined, so I'd attribute it more to no one caring enough to change the image (see the first section on this page). – TMF (talk) 16:10, 9 January 2013 (UTC)
I would agree that this project is too limited in scope considering the serious participation issues at WPNY. Powers 17:50, 9 January 2013 (UTC)

New articles

Hello,

I've recently created a pair of articles that fall under the scope of WikiProject Western New York. I'd like to have them classed as to quality and importance, but being a newcomer to Misplaced Pages, relatively speaking, I'd rather have someone who knows what they're doing look them over before making a judgment call of that type myself. Please advise.

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Misplaced Pages struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! (Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.) Harej (talk) 22:47, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

WikiProject X is live!

Hello everyone!

You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!

Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Misplaced Pages:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.

Erie County vector maps

Hello,

This month and next I will be working on creating a never-before-made SVG image of Erie County and its municipalities. It will be featured in all county municipality-article infoboxes. Buffaboy (talk) 05:02, 29 March 2015 (UTC)
