After joining Essendon as a leading half-forward, O'Brien has been remoulded into a running midfielder. The Bombers are using his excellent endurance to move him into a run-with role, a task he held in three senior games in 2013. Against Greater Western Sydeny, he clamped down on Giant's captain Callan Ward. O'Brien's leadership qualities are highly refarded as he secured a new two-year deal though to 2015.
The club are shaping O'Brien into an inside midfielder, where he can use his grunt and hard running to impact the play. Last season he toiled away in the VFL and will continue to sharpen his pace and work at collecting more possessions. Drafted as a leading half-forward, O'Brien is into his fourth season at the club.
