- Battle of Lechaeum: A Spartan mora (regiment) is defeated by Athenians led by Iphicrates. This is the first time in Greek history that a force of light infantry defeat a unit of hoplites.
- July 18 - Battle of the Allia: Gauls, under Brennus, defeat the Roman army. This leads to the capture and sack of Rome. Although he raised an army in outlying districts, the again dictator Marcus Furius Camillus got rid of the Gauls by paying a large tribute.
