=== Taddrick Mingo Lawsuit ===

In 2014, Jermaine Dupri Mauldin was sued by Taddrick Mingo under the Fair Labor Standards Act. (United States District Court for the Northern District of Georgia, Atlanta Division, Case No. 1:14-CV-2606-SCJ). Taddrick Mingo alleged that he worked as Mauldin's assistant for four years without ever receiving a single paycheck for his services. The litigation is currently pending. In his summary judgment brief, filed March 17, 2016, Mingo's attorney stated:

<blockquote>
Taddrick Mingo worked as Defendant Mauldin’s assistant for four years without ever receiving a single paycheck for his services. Mingo’s job required him to do whatever Mauldin needed, whenever Mauldin needed him to do it. From 2010 to 2014, among other things, Mingo coordinated Mauldin’s schedule, made sure Mauldin signed important documents to ensure he would get paid for his services, arranged trips to the zoo for Mauldin and his kids, accompanied Mauldin on more than half his business trips, many of which involved international travel, counted money for Mauldin when Mauldin performed D.J. services, made sure individuals who visited the studio at any time of the day or night had everything they needed for their recording sessions, including recording, editing and running errands for the sometimes demanding artists. Mingo even provided talking points for Mauldin when he appeared for television interviews. Working as Mauldin’s assistant was so demanding that Mingo moved from his home in Gwinnett County to the studio apartment at So So Def Productions so that he could better serve Mauldin’s all-consuming needs.

Working for Mauldin was certainly exciting. With Mauldin, Mingo traveled the world visiting places he otherwise may never have seen, met celebrities that most only see on television, and learned a great deal about his passion--the music industry. In fact, Mingo was so excited about working with the Grammy award winning Defendants, that he forgot to negotiate his salary.

Because Mingo had a long history with Mauldin, he trusted that Mauldin would pay him a fair rate for his services, even if it meant that he would be making only minimum wage, as required by law. But it didn’t take long for Mingo to realize that Mauldin wasn’t paying him. Anytime Mingo questioned Mauldin about his pay, Mauldin would ensure him that he planned to pay him, but that he “needed to work out some things first.” Mingo did the math, and figured he could wait a while longer. Since Mingo had received a $50,000 advance for work performed prior to becoming Mauldin’s assistant, periodically received checks ranging from $200 to $2000 for work performed prior to 2008, earned money occasionally (albeit sporadically) when he performed work for other record labels, was not required to pay rent at the So So Def studio apartment, and had no monthly car payment, Mingo decided to hang on.

Notwithstanding Mingo’s excitement, working for Mauldin was still a job, and Mingo expected to be paid for his work.
In 2014, Mingo realized that Mauldin had no intention of paying him, refused to continue working for free, and demanded that Mauldin compensate him for services rendered. Mauldin admitted that he owed Mingo and asked Mingo to let him know how much was owed. Mingo estimated $260,000.00 for the past 4 years, but rather than responding with a paycheck, Mauldin continued with more empty promises, forcing Mingo to file the instant lawsuit.

Early life

Jermaine Dupri Mauldin was born on September 23, 1972, son of Tina (Mosley) and Michael Mauldin, a Columbia Records executive. His father, also a Atlanta manager Michael Mauldin, had coordinated a Diana Ross show in 1982; to the delight of concert-goers, Dupri managed to get on-stage and dance along with Ross. Dupri got his start as a dancer for the hip hop group Whodini when he was twelve. He made an appearance in their music video for the song "Freaks Come Out At Night". He began performing around the country, appearing with Herbie Hancock and Cameo before he opened the New York Fresh Festival, with Run-D.M.C., Whodini, and Grandmaster Flash.

The group's first album, Totally Krossed Out, was released in 1992 and went multi-platinum due to their singles "Jump" and "It's a Shame". He established his own record label called So So Def Recordings in 1993. Shortly after, he discovered female R&B group Xscape at a festival in Atlanta and signed them to the label. Their first album, Hummin' Comin' at 'Cha, went platinum. During the same year, on Yo! MTV Raps he met Da Brat through Kris Kross, signed her to his label So So Def Recordings, and released her debut Funkdafied (1994) which went platinum. So So Def Recordings entered into a distribution partnership with Columbia Records in 1993. In 1995, he collaborated with Mariah Carey for the first time on the number one hit single "Always Be My Baby." He contributed to Lil' Kim's 1996 album, Hard Core on the track "Not Tonight".

The follow up single "Nice & Slow" went to number-one on the Billboard 100 and Hot R&B/Hip-Hop chart, and the last single from "My Way" peaked at number-two on Billboard 100. All three singles have been certified Platinum by Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
