Area code 323 is a California telephone area code. It covers, roughly, the area of central Los Angeles, including Hollywood, but it excludes Downtown Los Angeles and its immediately adjoining neighborhoods such as Koreatown, Echo Park, and Chinatown. 323 also includes several gateway cities of the region, including Bell and Huntington Park.
323 was created in a split from area code 213 on June 13, 1998; it completely surrounds 213. With 323 currently projected to exhaust in 2017, preliminary relief plans drawn up by the California Public Utilities Commission call "erasing" the 213/323 boundary and turning 213 into an overlay for all of central Los Angeles.
